wish we had more stand up in the fight but ddp's TD defense for khamzat was too weak didn't make sense for khamzat to risk standing with ddp I guess if he could get the take down so easily and win the round. congrats to khamzat

I dont follow Dricus.

Is he a standup fighter who doesnt do well in grappling? Or the other guy was just that good?

I only caught the last 3 rounds of the match (missed the rest of the UPC card too), but it was like 90% Dricus on the ground getting smothered except the last minute he fought back a bit.

I think driscus is well rounded in both striking and grappling but khamzats grappling is on another level I guess. I think Chechnya is supposed to have high level grappling same as dagestan that region is the best in grappling

He wasnt trying to win the fight from there though - just the competition. Being able to hold someone down for 25 minutes is a skill no doubt but its not entertaining. He has the skill to do something from that position that would win the fight - choosing the least risky most boring way to do it is disappointing.

Call me a casual all you want but this fight was boring as fuck.
Welp, if Khamzat defends his belt once a year it will already be a miracle and if all the fights are like this then oh boy this division is cooked.
Also the ref must've bet his house on Du Plessis or something.

I think he usually tries to get a sub early but since he couldn't get it done just played it more safe to secure the belt DDP didn't really look damaged at the end seemed fine lip was kind of swollen I think. if khamzat can't sub someone in the future hope he inflicts more damage with ground and pound

Im sure his ear really really hurts.

Absolutely terrible stand-ups by Marc Goddard. Standing up a fighter from the bottom is rewarding their passivity. In my opinion, if you want to get up, then you're going have to really try which involves opening yourself up to subs and strikes, and further advances in position from your opponent, but that's how we get to see more dynamic ground action; if you're not willing to take that chance, then tough luck.

I agree that they didnt make sense in the context of the rest of the fight which looked identical to the times he separated them. I disagree that you were ever going to see dynamic ground action - Khamzat clearly had no intention of doing anything but smothering any kind of actual fight. There were times where he had full control with one arm locked completely for minutes at a time and did nothing.
Where was this guy?

Just saw Mighty Mouse telling people to shut off their TV whenever Khamzat is fighting if they don't want to watch wrestling during a MMA fight, that's not the fucking problem!
Khabib was a wrestler and he was amazing to watch, but he not only got control of his opponents, he also beat their ass in the ground, meanwhile Khamzat spends half an hour hugging a dude?
God above.
Of course Dricus is also to blame, dude couldn't do shit to counter Khamzat but that's not the point, the point is that sports have to be fun to watch to have an audience and outside of hardcore fans and elitists, fighters like Khamzat are a good viewer base's kryptonite.
Thankfully I watched the fight in the morning so I could skip along, but a group of friends who watched it live told me they straight up shut off the TV and played cards instead...

Respect to Khamzat though, dude went there to win and he did what he had to to achieve it, nothing more, nothing less. Reminded me of Alain Prost in a way.
Of course he could've risked it to make the fight more entertaining but he fought only for himself and no one else. But for me if his first title defense pans out the same way as this then I won't ever watch another fight of his.

DDP relies on his attributes rather than technicality, so Khamzat's best game plan was to convert his technical advantage into control time. Against conventional strikers he'll have a better chance of finishing them. And against other grapplers there will be more dynamic exchanges and a greater chance of striking. Like, he's not holding RDR on the ground for all that time.

I've seen multiple highlights of these huggers and they give boring shows

Wrestling I think is what this era is, the type of guy who threatens opponents with wrestling and some are all in on this show much like the suga vs merab fights. It would be amazing if there's someone who can wrestle and use his fists

I'm coming back to say that Khamzat deserves his flowers. Like Whittaker said in his podcast, he should not have been forced to stand up. He's like Mayweather except he has to go out and get the guy. Not just actively defend with shoulder rolls and superb defensive posturing.

Khamzat asks the question, the oppenents job is to find some answers. Highly impressed with the cardio mangement. He smothered and didn't need to go hard like he did with someone like Holland. I don't think people realize how impressive Khamzat's dominance was against a very able DDP.

The hate or cynisism is so undeserved. I challenge anyone to take on an equally tall and build like a rock, highly trainned MMA champion, and do remotely what Khamzat did to DDP. We have never seen DDP manhandled like this. This was such an amazing thing to watch. I love BJJ and general grappling. Gordon Ryan comes to mind and all those competitions.

This was the most dominant victory against any champion ever. At least in this style and not some all out slugfest KO.

EDIT

Here's Mighty Mouse saying something similar about standing them up
