I present to you the underrated bands thread.

To open this up, I will present a band that should be up there with the Radiohead, Pink Floyd and Smashing Pumpkins of this world. Seriously, we all know here they're good but a lot of people have no f'king clue about them:

Didn't you mean most overhyped and overrated thread? Because that's where Tool's at.

Seriously, dude. If I don't see at least 10 Tool shirts a day, it's been a slow day for Tool fans.

Eminem

goddamit, Griese!
Best thread ever? It is.

Tool is the best band ever.
When was the last time we had a Tool lovefest on here? It's been far too long to salute the gods of music.
NEW ALBUM MUST COME QUICKER.

But to add to the list:
dredg
Atreyu

You're out of your mind. Tool is so underrated is so funny. 'Cept all the bandwagon fuckers who jumped on it, no one has any idea about them.

I consider Tool amongst Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Pink Floyd, The Doors etc.. Everyone I freaking mention Tool to, they have no clue who they are.

my favorite bands > your favorite bands.

and seriously, the last thing I expected to see in this thread was Tool. Haha, that's like saying Nine Inch Nails is a little known garage band.

Yeah...most Tool fans I see are fans since they heard Lateralus since Schism was popular. I won't argue they're mainstream, but they are definitely not that popular. Most of the people wearing Tool shirts like bands like Linkin Park, too.

I'm not sure that underrated is the right word, as even most people that don't like Tool appreciate their music, they just don't dig it.
But, they definitely aren't as well known as they should be. People knew Zeppelin in their time...Tool doesn't follow suit.

Super Furry Animals. And get this, they're actually underrated, unlike Tool.

Oh, and I don't think they should be up there with bands like Radiohead. I think they should be above Radiohead. Fuck you, Radiohead. Wales > England.

Jesus, man, did you miss high school? I was nearly crucified for not liking Tool... by my entire school. Of 1300 kids.

If any girl has any black clothing, any at all, she probably fucking loves Maynard. If a kid likes alternative music, they've probably been 6 Tool and/or APC concerts. You can buy Tool cds at Target. I can't say that Tool is underrated anymore than I could say that Korn is underground.

EDIT: Super Furry Animals looks like the best band ever. I want in.

I haven't missed high school. Metallica was THE thing in high school. Yeah some people might know about Tool but I don't think they get how good they freaking are. I think they jumped on them because it was hip thing to do.

Dead

well not really...yet
Im not really understaning the train of thought that leads to the opinion that Tool is underrated.

I would say MAYBE.....MAYBE they suffer from underated overratedness. But not flat out underrated, thats just objectively wrong.

So, what your saying is, that fans of a band don't really don't count as fans if they don't get how good they are? I'm slightly confused...

super furry animals are kitsch crap
Uh, please qualify this statement. They're no kitschier than The Flaming Lips. The only cute thing about the band is their name. Their music is hardly gimmicky, unless you're only familiar with the fact that the band dresses up funny for their last song when performing live.

I agree with Jim entirely. Tool is wayyyyy overrated. I almost got in a fight with this kid because I told him loot was Tool backwards.

Oh, you also said Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Smashing Pumpkins and the Doors were underrated. They're also all overrated. Two of my favorite bands ever are Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins, but I can accept the fact that they're overrated.

I agree with this to a point...I mean, a ton of people were all about Tool because it was popular the same way tons of people jumped on Slipknot a few years back.
Just because a band is well known does NOT mean they are not underrated. You see people in Tool shirts...ok? Doesn't mean they know jack about the band.

There are tons of people at GAF who are genuine Tool fans and we mostly shove it down your throat(because they are that good =p) ...but to most people, they don't appreciate Tool's actual music. It's just hip.

My take on it, anyway.

Blur is one of my favorite bands, man. I just got their Special Collector's Edition album, or whatever it's called. "Theme From an Imaginary Film" is fucking great. It's one of the best songs I've heard from them. I wish I'd heard it earlier.

What I'm saying is this... Tool are known amongst a certain group of people but when have you seen Tool on heavy rotation on much music, mtv or whatever like Radiohead has been? They're not getting the exposure they should be getting. Plus, most of the peeps who are listening to them jumped on them only because it was a cool thing to do. It's hard to explain but I'm telling you, ask anyone who doesn't have access to the internet or whatever and ask them who Tool is, and likely they'll have no idea who they are.

Tool and their fans are annoying...

I agree about the fans. The older school Tool fans are where it's at. A ton of Tool fans are total dickheads though. No question.

However, Tool is one of those bands that i can't see people saying they're "bad" or "annoying" or "trash"

I mean, i hate radiohead...i really do. But I can see why people like them, and I respect Radiohead more than almost any band out there right now. I can respect them. People that come out and say "I can't stand Radiohead/Tool/Zepplin/Floyd" can go to hell for not having any taste and/or being a douchebag.

IF you don't like the music, at least respect it. </rant>

most of the peeps who are listening to them jumped on them only because it was a cool thing to do.

maybe it depends where you live...but for me, this is ridiculously true

O-okay? People who buy a band's cds, t-shirts, and go to their concerts usually DON'T rate the band high? And if tons of kids do it over and over again, making the band popular, making them have sellout worldwide tours and buying Maynard a BMW, they're STILL underrated because they're NOT REAL TOOL FANS? Jeez, you guys are more elitist than NOFX.

EDIT: Actually, X103, the local alternative station, used to have Tool every other hour. They'd tote it as such. They'd have "Mandatory Metallica" and "Two Hour Tool". That, and MTV2, which is slowly becoming MTV regular, played Tool music videos just as much if not more than Radiohead. Still not as much as Metallica, though.

I think there is a difference between "overlooked" and "underrated."

Anyway -- my vote is for Beck. As far as I'm concerned, he's this generation's Dylan.

woah. you're telling me there aren't posers out there? fuck, i've done that. I've bought a splitknot cd and shirt without hearing one song...and i wore the shirt all over without really liking them becuase it was cool. at that time i couldnt name more than 3 songs off their cd.

i've come to like them now, but i never wear the shirt. i was a bandwagon, jump on the hardkor3 hype loser.

i KNOW there are fans like that of Tool. and again, i said underrated is the wrong word for tool. but yes, just because a band is popular doesn't mean most people dont know how good they are/aren't.

I don't get the whole "Tool is underrated" crap. The way Malakhov seems to be putting it, if you didn't like Tool when they first started you're some kind of poseur just jumping on the bandwagon. Elitist shit like this makes me hate some people who genuinely have good taste in music.

It's not anyone's fault if they didn't like Tool until they became popular - it's quite possibly the first time they were exposed to the music and they liked what they heard. I wouldn't equate Tool to be the kind of music that a typical "bandwagon jumper" would ever like. In fact, I believe this is the reason why they're still "underrated".

Anyways, everyone I know - well, several people I know - dig the shit out of Tool - myself included. But, since I didn't start listening to them until 4 years ago I must be one of those "fake" Tool fans that "don't appreciate" their music, right?

I had no clue people like that existed. I'm not even fucking around. I know ingenuine people exist, but I did not know it was to that extent.

Man you've got me all wrong. Maybe I can't express myself 100% because I'm drunk but I'm not saying if you got on Tool years after they started that you're a poseur. I'm saying a lot of peeps got on them only because it was a cool thing to do. Hey, if you really enjoy them, I don't care when you got on.

no no no...it's people who hear schism, listen to all of lateralus and are suddenly "i own 45 tool shirts" people. any person can get into any band at any time. but shit, at a tool concert, in the 2nd row of people from the stage i've heard "man i hope they play shit off of lateralus. i havent heard their other stuff"

I understand that there are definitely poseurs out there, but seriously, man- for there to be poseurs, there has to be an exorbitant following of whatever is being mimicked. To overlook that fact is certainly a logical fallacy. Non poseur wants to join the tiny bandwagon, they want to join what will make them appear popular and cool. And the only ways that a band gets that way is, 1. Talent and genius, and/or 2. Good marketing.

They're not underrated. They're regular-rated.

anyways, yeah, fuck you alpha.

but shit, at a tool concert, in the 2nd row of people from the stage i've heard "man i hope they play shit off of lateralus. i havent heard their other stuff"

What's wrong with that?

I went to see Bad Religion 3 years ago and I hardly knew any of their older stuff and I really wanted to hear a few songs from "Process of Belief" and "The Gray Race". It's great to hear songs that are "new" to you at a concert, but it's also awesome hearing live versions of songs you're already familiar with.

Now, if that same person who had a thousand Tool shirts threw them away a month later to replace them with Meshegguh shirts, then later tossed those for Cradle of Filth (a band I would consider underrated), then I'd agree - they're lame. By all means, listen to a band because you like it, but don't pretend to enjoy it just because other people do.

I'll try naming a few...people may disagree:

Opeth - their music is beautiful (to me at least...) and I've seen them praised on the internet. I do not know anyone in real life that knows about them, nor have I ever seen them in a shop, etc.

Pagan's Mind - great progessive metal that I found on Amazon.com

Planet X - more great progressive metal that I found on Amazon.com

Though, I don't know if these bands could be mainstream or as popular as "the Radioheads, Pink Floyds, and Smashing Pumpkins."

yeah opeth is very good. but again, i dont know if they are underrated. underrated to me means that the artist is just not getting their due, the praise they deserve.

yeah pretty much, their heavy stuff sucks ass actually. surely they actually listen to their own material...such a disparity.
