opeth's "softer" stuff is so much better than their metal stuff, to me.
yes, that's the stuff I really love. Some of the hard stuff I can stand, but when it get's to the intense growling, I just shut it off or skip ahead.

They're/he's not really underated(two singles are currently number 1 and 2 on Billboard's Hot 100) and critics and Bruce Springsteen love him, it's just Bright Eyes always gets lumped in as some "emo" band. Fuck that, Conor Oberst is the next Dylan. :)

I totally agree with you. Bright Eyes's songs are so heartfelt, and almost every lyric just crushes you. I usually loathe acoustic guitar, but Bright Eyes makes them work. That's saying something.

Uh, please qualify this statement. They're no kitschier than The Flaming Lips.

I find their sound kitsch, too. Juxtaposed with U is annoying. Sometimes it just feels like cutesy elevator music.

That's one song out of over 150. Don't discount a band just because you don't like a single.

I know I shouldn't tell people what they should like, but I get the feeling you heard a song and came to that conclusion just because of the band's name. They've been around for a while now, and have released seven full albums (counting a b-side collection);one of which is sung entirely in their native language, Welsh.

They've done some amazing things throughout their career, and I'm eagerly anticipating their upcoming release. I personally like "Juxtapozed With U", but that doesn't have anything to do with anything. I can't think of another song they've done that sounds anything like it. The reason I'm constantly singing the band praises is because unlike their contemporaries, they don't take themselves too seriously. And when they do take themselves seriously, their sense of humor saves them from going over the edge. They've done quite a few touching songs, in spite of their kitsch.

The first time I heard Rings Around the World, I was floored. I hadn't heard something so awesome in such a long time. I'd owned Guerilla, but didn't think much of it. Something about it didn't click with me until Rings Around the World came out. But man, from that point on, I was obsessed with the band. I grew to appreciate Guerilla to the point where I'd call it the greatest album of the '90s. And then I discovered the rest of the band's brilliant catalog. Radiator and Fuzzy Logic are albums that destroy anything Oasis put out (funny enough, both bands were carried by Creation Records for a period) at the time, and I'd say they're more Beatles, as far as innovation is concerned, than Oasis ever was. Mwng was like something I'd never heard before. The entire album is in Welsh, like I mentioned previously. And as far as I knew at the time, there was no Welsh language. There's something really ethereal about the language, and the way the band put it to use on the album.

And then there's Phantom Power, their last album. Now, it's got a weak track or two ("Golden Retriever), but some of it is just unbelievably brilliant. From this point on, Super Furry Animals is going to develop a sound that's likely to catapult them to fame. I really think it. We'll see. But they've discovered something brilliant, and I see them putting it to use.

And if they were pure kitsch, they wouldn't have a very vocal, but minor, fanbase who pretty much think they're the greatest thing since Pink Floyd and The Beatles. We exist.

I'm sure they'd be unamused by the fact that some people take them so seriously, though. It goes against their music.

That's a bit of a long-winded rant, but I at least want you to understand why someone would like the band. Some people tend to be immature when others criticize what they like, but I don't see the point. People can always be converted.

So please, don't tell me one of my favorite bands is kitsch shit if you don't know what you're talking about.

I'll give a nod to Bright Eyes as well. In the top 5 of the last 200 CDs I purchased. Shit, maybe #1.

B00006FRN7.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Also, I know I'll get some hate, but AFI from "Very Proud of Ya" to "Art of Drowning" were fucking awesome. I also like "Sing the Sorrow", but to a much lesser extent - but this is the album they are most known for...so I can say their other stuff is underrated. This includes the Awesome "All Hollows EP"

B000028TWG.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Also, my favorite album from one of my favorite bands that is too depressing for me to listen to anymore - Blessid Union of Souls self-titled second CD.

B000002ULU.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

And, while definitely not underrated (or overrated) - Radiohead is too awesome to exclude. This CD's last track "Street Spirit - Fade Out" is fucking awesome.

They're like Nickelback, but good. Pretty much a mix of rock/alternative/and a tiny bit of country. Pisses me off, because it's like Avril Lavigne getting famous over Nelly Furtado, or Celine Dion getting famous over any other Canadian female singer. The crappy ones always rise and we get blamed for providing shitty music.

Check out;

Live a Lie
Wasting My Time
Sick and Tired
Deny
Blind

All of their music is very similar, I admit, but I still think they're great.

The Black Keys -- fucking awesome blues heavy band. So gritty you'd think it was picked up off the floor of a N'awlins restaurant.

Alien Ant Farm -- Seriously, I think most people heard Smooth Criminal and pushed this band off as pap. Listen to Truant and Everything else BESIDSE Smooth Criminal, and they're an actual pretty decent band on their own.

The Thermals -- cheezy, lo-fi, artsy fartsy geek pop rock.

Weather Report -- 'Nuff said.

In my town Tool would be considered underrated. I'm the only fan in my school.

I'm not sure what other bands I listen to would be considered underrated. I like Opeth, previously mentioned in thread. Maybe Porcupine Tree as well. Days Of The New? I like a lot of cult-type stuff such as The Smiths and Mr. Bungle which can't be considered underrated since they do have mass followings. I don't listen to stuff that my age group does so most of the stuff I listen to seems underrated.

Mr. Bungle is pretty underrated, deeb. I've seen guys around these forums calling Bungle a gimmick band (like someone called Super Furry Animals). Another case of people misinterpreting a band just because they think a band with a name like Mr. Bungle couldn't possibly make good, serious music -- gasp! -- all while having fun with it!

Yeah, so their first album is immature circus/death/funk metal. Big deal. It's still awesome. And their evolution is a testament to the band's greatness.

Definitely, Guzim. They're a really brilliant band some people would like to blow off as generic britpop. What they don't realize is that Blur is the greatest band that ever did britpop, and that they're still brilliant. Even without Coxon they're making great music.

I love The Great Escape, Modern Life is Rubbish, Parklife, and 13 (maybe to a lesser extent, although this was my favorite album of all time at one point in my life) equally, and consider them to be some of the catchiest and greatest albums I've ever heard.

How could anyone deny the greatness of songs like "To the End" or "Starshaped"? HOW?

first of all, you're wrong. you are thinking of London Suede. :p
secondly, i like blur but i just dont quite get the praise they get (outside of america). either way, they may be underrated in america but they are quite critically acclaimed everywhere else.

Alice in chains was always underrated especially during their time. Everyone flocked to Nirvana/Pearl Jam and a lot of people still do not know who they are.

Well, honestly, I just really like extremely catchy music. Supergrass isn't much further down on my list, just for reference.

No shit. Nirvana got/gets so much attention, while AIC is superior to them in every single way.
