SHANGHAI — An unidentified plane has crashed to the ground and exploded in eastern China, state media reported on Tuesday, but the accident remains shrouded in mystery and potential casualties remain unknown.

The crash happened in Zhejiang province near Lishui city on Monday evening amid heavy fog, the state-run China National Radio said, but local residents told AFP police quickly sealed the site off to the public.

The Beijing News quoted locals as saying they had seen something that looked like a plane crash on a hilltop and explode. One official at the scene said the plane was not a civilian aircraft, the report said.

Caixin Century magazine, a well established news weekly, speculated the aircraft may be military, privately-owned or for agricultural use.

The defence and agriculture ministries were not immediately available for comment.

When asked about reports of the plane crash, a local government official, who refused to be named, told AFP that an investigation was "on-going" but refused to comment further.

Residents living near the crash site said there was talk the plane carried one or two people, but those figures could not be confirmed. Police had sealed off the area, they added.

"The site is blocked off so I am not sure what is going on," one resident, who only identified herself with her surname Hu, told AFP by phone.

The Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy, whose founder has extensive contacts in China, said soldiers had been seen blocking and clearing the scene.

If the aircraft is confirmed as a military plane, this would be the second such incident in just under a month, after a fighter jet plunged to the ground and exploded at an air show in October, killing one of the pilots on board.

Russian/Korean/American/their own spyplane is shot down and they weren't able to keep the media from seeing it before they could cart it off.

Yeah, that's my guess as well. They're hard at work on 5th generation fighters.

With the F117 wreckage and tangentially related 'modified helicopter' they've collected, they may be only twenty years away from a jet that outperforms the F22. This is terrifying and the US needs more military funding as a result.

We should double the military's anemic budget.

While I don't necessarily agree with your conclusions, and suspect they might be sarcastic anyway, yes, China's progress is remarkable. Of course you always have the catch-up advantage, but even then, China is projected to have several hundred stealth fighters by 2025, fighters likely close to equal to America's. Of course the USA is projected to have 1500 stealth fighters at that point, but still :P.

The US still has money to produce these ? Serious question.

By looking normal at first. There's a picture where you see him progress to crazier and crazier hair, but I couldn't find it. Maybe someone else can.

Well, it's not so much that it has the money, it doesn't, it's that the US is willing to spend it anyway. It's a bit like most European welfare states in their current incarnations in that way.

He has been replaced by alien replicants who don't know how human hair should resemble

I keep seeing this guy everywhere but have no idea who he is. Can someone explain it for me?

Moving forwards, all the fighters to be produced will be "stealth fighters", the two major ones in service being the F22 Raptor (Air superiority) and the F35 Lightning II (Multirole Strike Fighter). They will eventually replace all of the older aircraft in US service with newer ones, all of which will be including stealth characteristics to keep them modernized.

The dates were pulled out of my anus, yes. That said, I have strong reservations as to whether the in-development J-20 fighter will match the Raptor, let alone exceed it. For reference, it's due to be put into service in 2018. Assuming my gut feelings are right on this one, that would mean that it won't be until the Chinese pump out a sixth generation fighter that they could "overtake" America. That will not be for a fair while down the line (20 years was a random guess based on nothing).

He's an "expert" that is regularly featured on History channel programmes about Aliens, Ancient Astronauts building the pyramids etc.

Yeah, I reckon ~40 years before meaningful numbers of a proper 6th generation fighter arrive. Who knows if it'll even be manned at that point though.

Ok... what's with his hair?

Nobody knows.

I have a feeling that the Air Superiority / SEAD craft will continue to be manned (with the option of remote piloting maybe?), and everything else will switch to fully unmanned. The logic is that if you're expecting to be in contested airspace, you're far more likely to be exposed to electronic warfare stuff which could cut you off from the place you're receiving piloting instructions.

This is China. They are the media. And that's why I'm gonna put on my tin foil hat and say the plane wasn't theirs but some foreign spy plane.

He hosted a series called "Ancient Aliens", it's entertaining and ridiculous, definitely worth a watch, its on Netflix,

werent there some fairly recent news about unmanned fighters being developed? or was that a bomber only? there was that one that could be launched from a submarine.

i find it baffling that anyone is even developing manned fighters but i guess the infrastructure to control them is still an issue.

This was quickly reported by the state media, so you can be sure its neither Chinese plane nor UFO. The news also hinted the wreckage was large one, so probably not a Global Hawk.

I think the Ancient Alien guy meme has reached GAF critical mass.

Today is the most I've ever seen it posted by far.
