Universal Remote Controls

Who else has gone this route? What do you use? Before I used the remote that came with my Pioneer receiver which was a pretty good learning remote and gave me control of almost everything. The problem was I had to map certain controls to buttons with labels that didn't make any sense which of course confused my g/f even though for the most part everything was logical.

So just a few days ago I picked up a Logitech Harmony 676 remote which I had been researching along with a couple other remotes and so far I'm quite impressed. While my old receiver remote was good for every day usage, I would have to pull out some other remotes every now and then for certain features. This remote has made it so that I could permanently put away all my remotes without ever a need for them again.

It has a nice web interface to make it easy to set up, and the one touch activity buttons are a god send. It feels weird that all I ever have to do is hit one button now rather than multiple buttons to either start up a DVD or watch TV. What's also cool is it allowed me to discover that my TV accepts certain remote commands that were not available on the original remote. For example, I used to have to hit the input button to cycle through all the inputs but apparently the TV can accept remote commands to go directly to any input.

What finally drove me over the edge to pull the trigger was the current deal Logitech is running. The remote retails for $199, but current net price is an average of $130. I found it for $112 and Logitech has a 25% off rebate that expires in mid March. That brings it down to a nice $84 which is not just a steal for this remote but any remote with the capabilities it has. I wanted to wait for the Harmony 880 with the slick color screen, but this was too good to pass up.

I always thought I'd end up with a color Philips Pronto even those cost $500 to $1000, but I've come to realize I prefer actual buttons rather than touch screen. So who else uses a universal remote, and what do you use?

And here's the 880 that I wanted to wait for:

Been using one of these for about a year. I'm very happy with it after having used a lot of other fairly pricey universals. Easy to use PC program for setting it up, none of the pain of detailed labelling and designing like the Pronto, and RF so I can change CD's or whatever from anywhere in the house. Really pricey at retail but not bad if you Ebay it. Review here.

I have to admit, I really that Harmony 880 though. The HTM works great but it's kind of ugly. The Harmony set up is pretty ingenious, too, if you don't have a set up that's overly complicated.

I have the MX-500, which is the cheaper version of MX-700 posted above (only controls 10 devices, no PC connectivity). I really like and it was the right price. I can't stand touch screen remotes, so it suits me pretty well. I think the MX-500 can be found for around $90 (USD).

I bought this one a couple months ago. It truly did eliminate all of my other remotes. I'm not very good at programming it though, so I spend a lot of time in the help section where it prompts you to turn things on and off or adjust inputs. Also, it remembers your last settings... not good if family members tend to adjust things without the remote. Another problem is battery life. I hope the 880 addresses the issue. I'm satisfied with it, but there is still room for improvements.

In fact, I'm currently using my Comcast remote because my batteries are dead in the 688. It does as good as job as any remote I have used... and it is free with the system

The 880 has a charging station and a built in rechargable battery. Also you should probably update your firmware on your remote. There was an update released like last week, verison 2.9 which addresses battery life issues.
