Sucks. But that is the way it worked with her contract that her creative worked belonged to Sony and she doesn't get listed in movie credits. She was paid for her services at the time.

It would be nice to mention the original creators, but I bet that leaves them open to lawsuits for royalties.

I'm going to be a massive asshole here judging by some people, but they got payed so who cares. You didn't make a masterpiece like Lord of the Rings. "Based on the Sony Game" is fine, besides the fact that the entire movie has a different script than the game.

We don't know the terms of the contract. "She was paid for her services" simply means she can claim no IP rights and royalties. This is different than courtesy mention in the credits especially if this doesn't lead to financial compensation. Then you are just being a petty fuck.

Sony cultists: Those dirty peasants should be lucky to work for a great company like Sony. It's not like those other shitty companies like MS, Nintendo, or Nvidia.
Anyways let's talk about the highway robbery of the cost of the Nvidia cards and the Switch 2.

A few of my friends went to see it for some pre-premiere screening and were told not to tell on social media that it is based on a videogame. I have no clue why.

Anyway, screw Sony.

Film is IP by name only, there's nothing really to credit them for in the film.
And that's not saying they don't deserve credit for their work, just that they didn't even use it.

It's not an unreasonable demand since they're just asking for a small nod but since the movie is already out what would having their names tacked on the credits really do? If anything more people probably read this article than actually looked at the credits.

The reality is that when you take a salary for creating something the things you create don't belong to you.

The Last of Us is way more popular than Until Dawn. Druckmann is involved in the production of the TV series, so he's in the show credits. She was not involved in the production of the movie, so there's her answer.

I guess she wanted her own no flash bulb red carpet walk of shame where the photogs don't know who she is.

Gives them clout on IMDB, the LinkedIn of the film industry. Getting even a small writing nod or creative credit for a wide release movie like this could open doors in the film industry for their careers going forward.

"I am struggling with the difference between Neil Druckmann's favour and that of others in your company"

Sony thinks Neil's name means something despite his divisive nature and that your names don't. Simple as that really.

She has Suicide Squad on her writing credits. Why would she want this turd stinking up her IMDB even more? Lol

It has to do with the movie unions. There are rules based on who gets what residuals based on credits. It's why extras don't get credited.

The movie has nothing to do with the game. The IP is owned by SIE. Neil Druckmanns name would not be in the HBO series if he was not involved with it.

The software I was heavily involved in designing/writing/maintaining/scaling for the global company I work for, which regularly gets over 50k requests a minute and has 24/7 uptime just got 2 years without major incident. I've never gotten any credit other than a thanks, here's a new Jira ticket. Meanwhile executives barely involved win industry awards and have parties for it.

Welcome to the big boy world.

very very loosely based on a sony game. the only thing it might have in common are the character names, and i don't even know if that's in.

Neil Druckmann gets credited on the Last of Us tv show because he works on it. you don't typically get credit for work you haven't done, and these people haven't worked on the movie.

maybe if it used the same story, there would be an argument there, but from what i hear, it's a totally different story.

I hope the the rules will change at some point so they can get credit.

So does the movie have the same story as the game?

I dunno...I watched the trailer for the movie a while back and it looks almost NOTHING like the game at all (story beats wise...). Until Dawn wasn't a roguelike at all and I don't know why they didn't just make the movie what the damn game was.

It is a business not a friendness.

hey, wait a minute! wasn't the whole justification for the otherwise unnecessary remake the 'synergy' to be gained from from the dual movie/remake releases?...

I highly doubt that a special thanks would have entitled them to royalties.

What is wrong with you people? We doing console wars in this thread too?

Or................Neil helped write and direct The Last of Us TV show episodes. Wouldn't you think that's a clear difference?

Reality is it would have been nice and cost them nothing to add a special thanks sections in the credits at the end even if they didn't have to. That's how you treat your partners.

"I am struggling with the difference between Neil Druckmann's favour and that of others in your company"
No reason to bring Druckmann into it. Not only was he writing/directing on the show, but it was a mostly direct adaptation of the game. A fair question would be why was Bruce Straley's name nowhere on that show? Then again, the similarity between Straley and her is that they're both no longer working with Playstation.

Man it sucks reading this. :(
But it's reality.

I hope the the rules will change at some point so they can get credit.

So does the movie have the same story as the game?

From our understanding, it does not.

You got paid for the game and what else happens with the ip is none of your business, And to be honest the game writing was no Oscar material anyways, it's some imdb 5/10 b-movie material.

Not only does Neil actively work for Sony, but he actually worked on the movies and tv shows...

Guess what when they make a God of War tv show, do you know who is going to get credited? Cory Barlog... most likely.

beyond that, there are rules to determine who gets credited. You'll notice that David Jaffe is still credited in the Twisted Metal tv series that is strongly based on the characters he created. If anyone has more of a reason to be complaining it would be Amy Hennig on the Uncharted movie.

The WGA has strict rules on who gets credited and how. If they were to make uncharted drakes fortune, I think Hennig would probably get credited, but because the Uncharted movie was a prequel she doesn't get credited any more than she would on an Uncharted 5 game.

Until Dawn isn't an adaptation of the original work, it's an expansion of the franchise. That's why she doesn't get credited here. It's simple as that.

Are you one of those "Sony cultist"?!?!111

Looked at everyone commenting to her and it's a complete circle jerk.

Not a single person mentions the WGA. The body that determines the rules for who gets credited... People's brains are rotting with self-importance and the appearance of unfairness...

To bring Neil into things is massively unprofessional btw, regardless of what you feel about him.

Sounds like Kim MacKaskill didn't even work on the movie and wants full blown credits. Your typical media whore looking for attention. As always.

And talk about ego. Until Dawn being an ICONIC game. lol. There's always something weird about media people always thinking everything they touch is the biggest pile of gold ever. Nobody else in any industry does this except Elon Musk whose always blabbing on social media and his companies. But at least he's CEO. You never even saw Steve Jobs much at all except when it was time to hype up Apple products at their annual show and he built up Apple, left and then returned to turn it around to be what it is today.

If these typical video game employees did what Jobs did, they'd be on social media 24/7 and leasing out billboards on every corner telling everyone how great they are and need their name stamped on every product that's sold.

She even says she's a director on salary where she didn't even get credit when the game was made. She should know better and grow up. Weird people.

Let's bring in some examples:

Prince of Persia the sands of time movie... the movie is based directly on the game. Jordan Mechner wrote the game and he is credited in the movie.

Markus Persson is not credited in A Minecraft Movie.

The Resident Evil movie does not credit Shinji Mikami, Kenichi Iwao, or Yasuyuki Saga

The new Resident Evil movie probably will. Not because they're snowflakes, but because the movie will probably be a close adaptation of the first game.

If a studio adapts a game like Until Dawn into a film, they could have credited Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick, but they were not required to under WGA rules.
Their exclusion was a deliberate choice by the filmmakers.

If for whatever reason a toy company made Until Dawn characters sold at Walmart, Kim MacAskill would probably want her name printed on the cardboard. Given her ego, she'd probably demand it be printed on the front too.

I mean, I don't think she is saying she specifically worked on Until Dawn, but she simply is ignoring the rules for accrediation in hopes that her and others can get credited with transmedia and probably get paid.

I don't begrudge her entirely, but I think that she's misguided and an egotist. Writers aren't the only ones that create a game. A game is more than just its story. You're not going to put the entire credits of a game in a movie, so it makes sense to truncate it to the studio/company that made the game.

If you have a writing credit due, you'll likely get it. If they use your song in the movie, you'll probably get a credit for that as well and so on.

Why isn't she asking for the person who came up with throwing glass bottles to get credit in the last of us? I'm kidding, but it's just kind of baffling that people are seeing a potential goldmine and want credit/money. They aren't novelists who are selling their works to movie producers.
