In this post September 11 world, deficits are a burden that we will have to bear. It's a new kind of war against a new kind of evil, and wars cost money.

Definitely. Not only do they cost money, but they're hard work as well.

The frightening thing is that neither major party gives the tiniest mouse shit about cutting spending, anywhere

The time when some Republicans, at least, could be relied upon as deficit hawks is like a mythical fantasy world now

I miss those days. Remember when Clinton *had* to be fiscally responsible, becuase congress and the people would have hung him if he weren't?

Yes but previously Americans were expected to sacrifice for the sake of war. Now you guys are exhorted to 'keep spending' and those of you who can richly afford it aren't expected to contribute to the greater good anymore.

At this rate, usa will lose it's "world power #1" status sooner than they believe and they will face a big depression.

Yes, but isn't being on shaky financial footing ALSO a threat to our national security?

I seem to remember that we "won" the Cold War by forcing the USSR's economy into ruins because they couldn't keep up with our defense spending. How do we know that China isn't just sitting back and chuckling as we weaken our ability to procure and support our defense systems? How will Dubya's new interventionist foreign policy work when we have to make concessions to those who own our debt?

I'm probably going to be shouted down for this, but wouldn't it be more cost effective to not fuck with people and get them all pissed of that they do some drastic shit that requires you to inturn start a war that will eventually backrupt you? I always like to point out that Sweden isn't worrying about fighting a war on terror neither is Nigeria, or Brazil. Hmmm.. wonder why that is?

Oh fucking please!!! It was Clinton that shutdown the government for a week because he wouldn't sign a budget that was more than he wanted to spin. The Republicans ran to every camera in America screaming it was Clintons fault not theirs. In the end the Republicans came up with the budget cuts that Clinton wanted.

bah, we'll all be dead by the time the US goes bankrupt.
It only takes one little thing before a chain panic starts, and global money start poring out. If something like OPEC start denominating oil prices in Euros or another currency since confidence in the dollar is weakening, then the shit will hit the fan while we are very much alive.

Those of us who survive the aftermath will tell our freakishly small progeny, whilst sitting around a pitiful garbage fire, of the wonders we saw leading up to the end times...

From Daily Kos (who I believe pulled this from a NYT article I read earlier in the afternoon). Italics mine:

The Congressional Budget Office noted that if Mr. Bush wins Congressional approval to make his tax cuts permanent, a top priority for the administration, the deficit would grow by $2 trillion over the next 10 years. If war costs in Iraq and Afghanistan taper off gradually, the agency estimated that price tag over the next 10 years could total nearly $600 billion.

debt numbers are all so meaningless. whether you personally owe $10,000 or the USA is 500 trillion in debt. we will all be dead soon and none of this will matter. i suggest you realize this and live your lives not worrying about fucking debt.

If any other country had the debt the US has their economy would have imploded long ago. When your reserve bank controls the flow of the global reserve currency however, you are afforded certain privileges, such as foreign investors happily supplying nice goods and services for more of your precious dollars and foreign banks and governments busy buying up your debt. All things change though, remember the name 'Euro' well because its rise to prominence in global trade and its increasing consideration as a reserve alternative will come to cost the US dearly in due time and the more the US trade deficit blows out the more dear that cost is going to be.

Sad situation...wasn't the US deficit at the lowest level it had been in years just five years ago?
We now refer to those times as "Pre 9/11". 9/11 was a Paradigm Shift...a Revolution of sorts. Due to security concerns, common sense and discretion have been banned in favor of shameless patriotism and shortsighted fear-mongering. What a time to be alive. PEACE.

Which is the thinking that has gotten us in debt in the first place *slaps forehead*. Seriously, the deficit is really just a number that gets thrown around, it doesn't mean much yet. But it's piling up, and when the next major shift in the global economy takes place, it will hit us like a ton of bricks. And no amount of last-minute tax hiking will fix it. People praise Reagan for winning the Cold War by outspending Russia. Yeah...fucking brilliant. Maybe we can outspend all our problems. :lol PEACE.

The deficit is not meaningless. We have to pay that money back eventually and the concern is that eventually the interest payments alone will be eating up half of our government's budget.

Still, we have shown that is possible to be in a surplus, but we probably wont do it until the last possible moment again.

Procastination, the American way!

Don't forget about our ports in which we recieve shipments of goods from around the world. I was watching something on CNN where if our ports were to shut down, because of a terrorist threat/bomb, then the global economy gets fucked.

You sad bastards don't realize the genius of Dubya's plan. We're going to spend so much, go SO far into debt, that we'll lap ourselves and end up back at zero. Brilliant!
