US vs. JP game sales

I'm looking for some numbers for:

1. Games that both did well in the US and Japan
2. Games that did well in US but not Japan
3. Games that did well in Japan but not US

It's for a report I'm doing on the contrast between the two markets. The game has to have been released in both territories to count, btw. Also, if you can provide a source where I can look this stuff up myself that'd be great too.

I know there's a numbers person out there that has all this info...so, please, help! :)

Great example of cross-region seller: Gran Turismo 4
Great example of US seller: Halo
Great example of Japan seller: Winning Eleven series

Numbers would be great to go along with those, but thanks. I need definite numbers here to do some fun statistical stuff.

Go to the Shrine of Data. It has the top selling games for each system in each region. The data hasn't been updated in a couple of months, but it is as good as you are likely to get.

I need lots of examples, not just one or two, so keep em coming! I'm going to get some food, but I'll be back...*any* examples will help me. Thanks guys!

I wonder if Dragon Quest 8 will do great in the US because it did monster sales in Japan.

I doubt it will do enough to bring about a lot of change in how the games are received in the US. It'll sell, but not enough.

One of the best examples of success in Japan and flop in the US would have to be Dragon Quest 7 vs Dragon Warrior 7.

Best-selling PS1 game vs flop.

I'm pretty sure Dynasty Warriors sells reasonably well here. The JP numbers are bigger of course, but the series does have a fanbase here now.

One last question...anyone know the current-gen console install base in each country as well as the population of Japan and the U.S.? I'd like to be able to something like:

"percentage of console owners in Japan who bought game x"
"percentage of console owners in Japan who bought game x"

As well as be able to justify why U.S. numbers are, overall, much higher (i.e. because of higher population).

Dynasty Warriors actually does pretty well on both sides of the Pacific, if you want a game that sold really well in Japan but was complete bomba in the US, go with Onimusha 2. :D

Well, DW7 did about 270,000 copies in the US... it's no where near the JP sales numbers, but for a series that hasn't seen the light of day in America since 1992, released at the tail end of the PSOne's life, in a genre not terribly popular in America, that's not bad at all.

Aye, it's surely not going to get any real magazine coverage here, with FPS and GTA like obsession. Plus having to actually read seems to be very difficult or "unfun" for most gamers around me in this country :( I love to be surprised and see it to at least 1 million here but alas, the times are nasty.
