Limewire, for your P2P needs.

Cyberduck freeware/donation barebones ftp app.

I actually like the preinstalled iChat for AIM.

I don't know what I need. Just taking suggestions for stuff. Never had a mac before, just curious if there's any spiffy applications that you guys could suggest.

apple's x window server is really nice, and free.

otherwise i don't think you're going to find yourself using much more than safari and mail

butler for a means to open any app by just typing. I've heard quicksilver is good too, haven't tried it.
Keep safari for your web, mail for your email
VLC for watching things quick time doesn't play. VLC will also play any region DVD, by the way. Just disable the auto-run of DVD player in your system settings.
I don't know how much or if ever you look up japanese words, but JEDict is an awesome dictionary program. I didn't stumble upon it at first, but its damn great.

Adium - Instant message program
Transmit - awesome FTP program
VLC - video player
Menu Calendar - puts calendar icon in the menu bar
Camino, Firefox - backup browsers (Safari suits me fine)

I've always thought the Mac version of Office kicked the ever-loving snot out of the Windows version, as ironic as it may be.
