Valkyrie Profile - PS1 or PSP?

I started playing Valkyrie Profile on the PS1 a couple of years back but never got much further than the second dungeon. It's something I've always been meaning to come back to because of the cool battles. So I was thrilled when the PSP version was announced, especially with the extra CG content.

But recently, I've been getting annoyed with some of the sloppy port treatment on the PSP. I refer specifically to games like Gradius and Namco Museum. I really have a problem with the stretched ultra-blur graphics, but when the graphics are left at the original res, unstretched, they tend to look a bit lonely in the middle of the screen.

So I was wondering, if anyone who has played the PS1 version and seen the PSP screens, can you tell me if they've been stretched with blur or has the game been "redone" to show the sprites crisply with a bigger background area on screen?

Kind of off topic, but I wonder if Square Enix will do any link-up functionality between the 2 VP's?

Is PS2 and PSP capable of linking up? I don't see why not.

Yes it is off-topic, but yes you can. MH2 allows you to connect your PSP and get items from MHP so you can make some armour at an earlier stage in the game.

I've had this conversation with jiji before. The game is definitely somewhat stretched. Everything is STILL proportional but..... well yeah. You get the idea. :D

As far as I can tell, other than the 16:9 mode, the graphics for the game wholly intact. The screenshots on the website look exactly like the game.

I dunno if this will help Jonnyram but here are some screenshots of both so you can compare

I think this doesn't help at all.

I seriously can't tell the difference it doesn't help the pics are shit, but from what I seen and having played VP1 on PS1... I think SE did a pretty job with the port.

The PSP screens look like their stretched to fit the whole battle screen (because in the 4:3 format of the PS1 VP, some monsters would go offscreen in the backfield). If anything, its looking as though Tri Ace is putting some effort into this port.

That's complete worthless a comparison because firstly those PS1 shots are 640x480, that's already non-native. Secondly it's IGN, so yeah the capture kinda blows. We did a comparison with native-captured PS1 res versus PSP pics and came to the conclusion that the sprites weren't "stretched" at all but the pre-rendered backgrounds are all squished/stretched/altered to fit the new ratio and keep it proportional. Battles aren't affected though, since the backgrounds aren't scrolling pre-rendered bitmaps. :D

On a related topic, how does this game play exactly like? I heard its a simulation RPG, and the system is complicated...

Dungeons = side-scrolling platforming stages - run, jump, shoot crystals to freeze enemies and make new platforms

Battles = touch or attack an enemy in a dungeon and go to battle mode, as seen in one of the above images. Fights are turn based and each face button makes a different character attack. Time your presses to make combos and what not. Cause enough damage in one sequence to trigger special deathblow type attacks.

Overworld/Story = fly around the world map and use Valkyrie's powers to find Einherjar candidates or dungeons. Going into a town or dungeon takes a certain amount of periods and the game is divided up into chapters of, I believe, 24 periods each. Each chapter you have to deliver a new Einherjar to Asgard, as well as recruit new Einherjar to fight in your party. It's pretty complicated, but it's also pretty freeform. Where you go and how your progress turns out is completely up to you.

I would say the pace of the game is pretty unconventional and some people may not like it (not being able to stay in one area and grind your levels up). You have to plan out who you send up, who you stay with, who you level up etc. It can get tedious but once you get the feel for the system, it becomes a very enjoyable game.

Thanks for the descriptions guys :-D

I'm still very iffy about buying the game. I've heard it's unconventional, and it's a love it or hate it game. On the other hand, I can get Suikoden 1+2 instead for a PSP RPG fix...hrm...

Well, I just bought one for $102 bucks a few weeks back, so... motherfucking BETTER be PS1, BITCHES.

...why? The JP psone version is $30. I guess if you're really picky about language...but does $70 justify a translation?

For a great PS1 to PSP port, try Tales of Eternia! (The Japanese version, that is. UK one is all hacked up and has awful voices.)

I hope the VP port is of the same quality as ToE. Definite buy for me, in that case.

I definitely think this is a day one buy for me. I never got to put a lot of hours into the original on PS1, so I am looking forward to finishing this game.

Anyone know if there is a preorder gift for this is Japan?

Yikes.

I picked up the JP version a few months ago for like ~$10 or so. :P

The PSP port looks really nice, though. It doesn't have that stretched, blurry look at all.

I'd happily part with my PS1 copy of VP. The discs look great, manual is in great condition. The jerk who owned it before me wrote "P" on each of the discs, but other than that, it's great. I'd much rather own the PSP version now.

That I don't speak/understand Japanese, at least not on a significant enough level to play an RPG coupled with not having a modded PS2... yeah. Funny thing is I HAD a modded PSOne, which I sold to Gamestop when PS2 came out. lol ...eff me, I guess.

Used, mint, and scratch/scuff free though! I still maintain I made out like a bandit. :p

It's a sickness on my part, really. But I got Star Ocean The Second Story (used, mint)/DDS1:LE (new, sealed)/Kingdom Hearts (new, sealed) for about the same price a while back, so I guess it all balances out in the end. lol

I think I've tracked down a $30 used (but in great shape) copy of Valkyrie Profile. I'll be purchasing it tomorrow, so until then I won't say anymore.

To the person who reserved the sole copy of Valkyrie Profile at the Lincoln, Nebraska Gamestop on Andermatt Drive... you're too late, because the clerk sold it to me today.

I'd been eyeing this copy using Gamestop's store locator for the last two weeks, hoping that it would still be here once I got to Omaha this week. I dug around in the PS1 bin, coming up unlucky, only to notice it sitting behind the counter. The clerk told me that someone had reserved it over a week ago, but never came to pick it up, so he didn't feel bad selling it to me. This was an extremely productive weekend, as we got a load of wedding stuff out of the way, and I scored a copy of Valkyrie Profile.

I wonder if SCEA will have the balls/be stupid enough to not let SE bring the PSP version to the US. They better fucking let 'em, but I have such a sinking feeling they won't...

Sony will reject the game 100% for sure.

But since SE is a BIG POWERFUL COMPANY they might be able to force it through by saying like "you want FFXII? Then let us release this"

Let's hope. Regardless, if SE doesn't release it themselves in Europe, I'm sure Ubi would do so. I'll probably end up importing it anyways, but I don't want to play it until I fully understand it, and that might mean no VP til early next year. ><;
