So, I'm due for a new phone with my Verizon contract, and I'm considering the Samsung A950 (or A970 which comes out this week)...

Anyway, VCast. I demoed it at the store, and it seemed pretty cool. I don't have an actual tv connection at home, so the streaming news, especially on the way to and from work/school seems great, along with the unlimited web/E-Mail... but is it really just a gimmick?

What do you VCast users think of the service? Do you really find it useful? Is it worth $15 a month?

I had it free for a month and barely used it, though it worked fine. The videos are pretty much worthless, and internet on a cell is what it is. VCast didn't offer me $15/month of utility.

It seems like a pretty nice toy, but I guess it really depends on how much you want the content, which seems to be more "Look what we can do!" than anything truly useful. Verizon knows that the real EV-DO users are shelling out ~$60 for computer access.

I just can't see myself using a tiny cell phone screen for much beyond, say, sending pictures and maybe checking e-mail and text messages. What I would like are more phones with full QWERTY keyboards, T9 text entry sucks.

Nah, screw Vcast. Put that $15/month towards Gametap. Not as portable - well, unless you have rights to install the client on whichever PC you're around when you feel like playing...

I've done some work on that phone and it is a great multipurpose phone. Screen is a bit too small for a lot of things,but if you pair that with VCAST you can ditch the foolish SMS message crap and just install a messenger for connectivity.

Now as to VCast, if you had a more PDA style phone (like a treo or similar) I would say - YES, but for the average phone - no, bad buy at this time unless you have some applications that you're using that eat a lot of data.

It's also an LG, which means that if it doesn't fall apart if you look at it cross-eyed, you're guaranteed at least two years of mediocre performance before you absolutely, positively can't stand the damned thing anymore.

(Yeah, I've never met an LG that worked right, or liked for that matter.)
