VERTICUBE - PC Lumines Ripoff!

20030425007100510.jpg

Disclaimer: Verticube is not a Lumines Clone. Frogtoss Games and Verticube are not associated with Sony, Q! Entertainment or Ubisoft in any way. Lumines tips may apply to Verticube, but that doesn't mean we have anything to do with Lumines. Lumines is a separate product created by a completely different company.
:lol

Site was working a moment ago, just had something on it aired on Attack of the Show on G4.

Doesn't look, play or sound as good as the real deal. The even knew they were ripping off the idea. Just cause they said it isn't Lumines makes it okay? And charging money for it? The fucking audacity.

Differences Between Lumines and Verticube

People are asking me what the differences are between the Sony PSP Game, Lumines, and Verticube. Since Lumines was made by a different company and is a different game, I thought I'd explain what's different.

Lumines Has Different Themes

How important are the themes? Well, I'd argue they're pretty important. In some cases, Lumines actually aims to confuse the user with the themes. This is part of the game, and it adds to the challenge. Heck, we have one theme that does this as well. (Registered users: Can you figure out which one it is?)

Lumines Has Different Modes of Play

Right now, Verticube has one main mode of play. Lumines has multiple modes.

Can I Compare Lumines Scores to Verticube Scores?

No, you really can't. There are such subtle differences between the two that it becomes impossible. Apples and oranges!

I hope this guy gets shut down

So the differences between Lumines and Verticube are (according to his own FAQ right there) essentially that Lumines is better, and made by a professional studio for a handheld console as opposed to some random jackass for PC.

absolute comedy gold!

"we aren't ripping off lumines, because we have some different skins and LESS game modes!"

APPLES AND ORANGES?? yeah, right!

The timeline and the way the blocks are set-up/broken down are very unique to Lumines I believe......I think frogtoss is about toget their salad tossed

Translation: Their themes try to confuse the user, ours don't. Well one does.... PAY FOR IT!

I don't see how this guy can seriously say that this isn't a Lumines clone. I played it, and it seems the only difference from Lumines is that the music doesn't change depending on how good you're doing and it's a lot slower paced and less fun.

At least it gave me an opportunity to try out Lumines. :lol
Cool game. :)

If you think this is good, you'll be amazed by the real Lumines.

maybe I'll try this out if impressions are good and people say it recreates pretty accurately...

If Lumines isn't' coming to DS or home consoles this might be a good resort...

:lol Just played it. It's exactly like Lumines. No difference at all. Wow.

Wow...I can tell you don't own Lumines by this post alone. This...game...is an absolute mess compared to Lumines...though it IS better than that shitty flash version
The author was right...this is Lumines with every aspect (severely) gimped

Who is that in your avatar? My first impression was BoA, but her eyes look different.

If the code isn't almosst exactly the same, it isn't illegal. more power to him.

Well, that's a little broad. I haven't played Lumines yet, but if this is exactly the same gameplay wise, defenses like "Lumines was made by a different company and is a different game" aren't going to stand up much in court regardless how little code they share.

My goodness, a freeware Lumines-type game with fans to make more themes and music would rule.

Now, this guy even went so far as to post in Lik-Sang:

I created a Lumines Clone for the PC so I could give my mom a chance to play. The next version will have networked highscores, which should make it more competitive.

The Lumines Clone line was a link to this very game. I guess that means that this person is contradicting himself.

Actually it will. Gameplay isn't copyright-able.

Yeah but copying everything down to the look and style is.... hence why you cant make a tetris clone without chipping money to alexi.

if sony can get in trouble for using a vibrating controller, then this has to be illegal.

Well now.

Call me crazy, but I prefer having a seperate button for 'dashing' the block about the screen.

And yeah, Jesus, if someone gave Lumines the Stepmania treatment, that'd be pretty freaking cool.

Yeah thats basically an exact replica of lumines if there was a speed setting and it defaulted to so slow its impossible to lose the game.

Hopefully this gets shut down becuase really, making it for free is one thing but to blatantly copy a licsenced video game and then sell it ? That'd be like if I made a graphics table hack of megaman and sold it has Meckman and changed his head to a full mask or something. It's also insulting to the original deal here becuase he's neglected to put in enough of what makes lumines a fun puzzle game, mostly the speed variation between skins.

i can't believe they not only have the gall to make a clone of Lumines and say it's not a clone of Lumines, but to also charge for this piece of unpolished tripe. There's no music progession and the animation is horribly jerky on my 1.4GHz machine. There's no background animation, it's not loading new sound loops, and that the effects are much less spectacular than Lumines, and they expect me to pay for this? The Shockwave version of Zoo Keeper ran much better on my machine.

But i agree, a pefect clone of Lumines with Stepmania's expandability would be awesome.

You omitted the whole part where you re-write the code of Megaman.

Yeah, I think this is pretty sleezy and all, but he actually did do SOME work.

Some work that tries to completely recreate the gameplay of another game. But then again, how many PC Tetris clones were there?

Are you saying he deserves some credit for this?

"My friend was the victim of identity theft. The guy who ruined his credit is sleezy and all, but he actually did do SOME work."

That is fucking disgusting theft. And not only that, he's taken all the charm and detail out.

Isn't it funny: people claim that big publishers are nothing but 'me too' production lines, then one of the few areas that can prove the variety of gaming - the homebrew scene - goes and rips off one of the year's nichest releases.

What a joke.

Well, there are thousands of Tetris clones out there...

It was only a matter of time before Lumines (the greatest puzzler ever) would be cloned as well.

OK, while that may be true...I hadn't actually read the website or tried the demo. This is one of the most blatant rip-offs I've ever seen...and the fact that he is charging for it? Crazy...

Update: I posted this to their forum, and it was deleted within 30 minutes (of course, I knew they'd delete it, so I saved a copy):

They then went and posted a sticky about not giving legal advice, so I'm going to politely repost my thread, only without the legal advice. We'll see how long that one lasts...

Here goes:
