Very bizarre Bill Gates quote on Macs

WHO DEY!?
"You can always tell if you're working on a Mac or a PC. Just take your applications and stick them in there and see if they run," he said, moments after calling Apple "the super-small market share guy."

This is perhaps the lamest insult I have ever heard. I know many Gaffers could do better than this.

Hell no. I'm excited that the GUI for 360 will be like the media center one- I think that is very cool and looks great on a TV.

My point originally is there was no sting in what Gates said. If it stings a Mac user like myself a little, then it's OK.

Hey! It's true!

And you can use the same technique to tell the difference between XBox and PS2!

I still don't understand how the remark is an insult? Apple not pwned on that one.

Mac's own PC's any day IMO.

Well, I love the style and OS design (though I now prefer XP)...but the Mac is simply not able to run 90% of the software I run on my PC. So, a Mac could "own" a PC in the sense that you prefer using the system and have a limited number of apps that you wish to run...but when it comes to running masses of software and sheer customization, the Mac doesn't even begin to compare.

I wouldn't mind owning a Mac, really, but it just isn't useful.

I'm thinking this was taken way out of context...Perhaps he was saying that if you didn't know which type of computer you were working on, you could try to run some software. If it was Windows software and it worked you're on a Windows machine, if it doesn't you're on a Mac.

However, this seems like a pretty stupid way of figuring out what type of machine you're on, then again, if you can't tell while looking at it or using it, then you may have bigger problems ;)

I don't know, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt here seeing as he's insanely rich and has a stake in Apple :)

90% of the software for PC is 3rd party crap. You don't need a lot of it, and what quite honestly would you be doing on a PC that you couldn't do on a Mac? I do design of all sorts and every professional program that I need is on Mac.

Saying Macs aren't useful is stupid. This is truly a statement from someone who hasn't really given Macs a chance. I get more out of my Mac than I ever did with my PC.

Macs are awesome and as far as I am consered the only thing a PC cna do that a mac cannot is Games. And that is only because software developers dont want to make games for a mac.

Gaming and everything that goes with it as well as compatibility with work related tasks (I work in IT and manage Microsoft network, afterall).

Really, though, I do not wish to encounter limits. I would be annoyed everytime I wanted to use something not available on the Mac. Oh, a new emulator was released? PC only? Crap. I would be unable to play most PC games as well (which is a big deal).

There are plenty of tasks that I could do just fine on a Mac. However, there are just as many other tasks that I could not. That's the problem. I can do anything I wish on a PC and I see no point in giving that up. I do not own a PC for just a few specific tasks. If all I did was some design work, some office work, and a little net surfing on the side...a Mac would be perfect (and I might even prefer it). However, my PC usage habits are a bit different...

It isn't that a Mac is NOT useful, it's that it is not useful to me in the face of a PC. I can do everything I want to do with a PC and switching to the Mac platform would only introduce limitations (plus more style).

I would just like to say Macs are slow pieces of crap. I mean they're sexy, but they're freaken slow as hell. I play with my friends powerbook (sexy 17" g4 one) from time to time and damn that thing is slow. He even says his 2ghz p4 beats the hell out of it himself. (he loves his mac though) And all the bells and whistles get annoying after a while too. He eventually just turned them all off because they were slowing the thing down.

The day I gave up PC gaming, the biggest headache of my life ended. Not at all worth it.

iapetus: I was just gonna say the same! "the super-small market share guy." You can call the Xbox that too.

That's exactly how I feel about Mac vs PC.

From my long time experience with both, I don't think Macs are any more productive, stable or faster than PCs. Just more stylish (OS and hardware). And now with stuff like FlyAKite 2.0 for XP, which is essentially a one-click solution to get what looks almost exactly like OSX, even the visual style point becomes almost moot.

:lol, I don't know why I said 'own', its totally out of character for me!

The only reason I say Mac's are better than PC's is that im an Artworker/Designer and Mac's are industry standard to me. When I first had to use one I was like 'OMG WTF ONLY 1 MOUSE BUTTUN!!!1' but I really got to like them and feel that Apples customer service aswell as support and technology are better than MS.

With MS when theres a problem its like im in a queue with say a 10000 other guys (cus the OS is so mainstream) and they don't care about my problem as much but with Apple Its like they want to help. I dunno, maybe its an underdog thing or something but its like Apple care about their small group of customers and MS don't give a shit about their millions of customers.

Anyway if you're into games you really are boned if you have a Mac, but with PC games you're boned anyway. Before Quake 3 came out I was like OMG ive just paid £250 for a Voodoo 3!! My GFX card is the bomb its gunna last forever! About 2 months later I pay 40 quid for a new game and I have to run it on the shittest settings 'cus I haven't got the latest GFX card or enough RAM etc.

So everytime I want to play the latest game (ie. Doom 3, HL2) I have to pay 200 quid for a graphics card to run it.

Long story short, PC gaming sux, Mac's run better than PC's IMO (music, internet, movies etc.), die Windows.
