Not that complicated no. Fixed function units to mitigate weaknesses(as much as possible) in the large ram/slow ram system they chose and also adds a couple unique features. A couple cool things reside within those DMA's that work in concert with the system like the free tiling, and lack of competition for the units in regards to another part of the system choking. The hint that much of this is automatic is where it gets interesting. How automatic and what parts are? MS has good tools and its obvious this is a planned addition not a reaction. So the overall plan seems to be that any added hardware mitigates something and adds some functionality that is somewhat unique as well which makes sense due to the foundation this is built on. The real question is unique versus complex and how they measure out.
It also seems like these are somewhat incorporated with the display planes and how they work but that's a bit obvious.
