Woman 'ordered to marry rapist'

An Indian woman who was allegedly raped by her father-in-law is now being ordered by a Muslim council of community elders to marry him.

The council says under Islamic law the rape has nullified her marriage, according to media reports.

But a top Muslim body in India has rejected the argument saying it is not valid under Sharia (Islamic) law.

It says the council was not authorised to give such a verdict and added that the alleged rapist should be punished.

Reports say the 28-year-old woman was raped when she was alone at home in Charthawal, in the norther Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

When the incident came to the notice of the council, it ordered that she marry her father-in-law and change her relationship with her husband to that between a mother and son.

It also ordered her to leave her home and stay away for seven month and 10 days to become "pure".

Police action

A senior police officer, Amrinder Singh Senger, told the BBC that police have now filed a case against the woman's father-in-law .

The victim has also been examined by doctors and police have recorded her statement.

India's National Commission of Women has also asked for a report from the government in the state of Uttar Pradesh, where the incident took place.

"We have requested the government to take action against the guilty and also pay compensation to the victim," NCW president Girija Vyas told the BBC.

A representative of a top Muslim body in India, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, said the case should be dealt under Islamic law.

"Under the Sharia law, whatever happened with the victim is wrong and if her father-in-law has raped her, he should be sentenced to death," the representative, Zafarab Geelani, said.

Well it does say that in the OT as well... i.e rape is ok as long as you marry them afterward.. Another reason NOT to base laws on ancient religious doctrine.

Actually religous doctrine in this case is saying that she shouldn't have to marry him.

Another case for focus on reading comprehension in the public education system.

Wait, wait.

How is it possible that this reality is more absurd than being assigned as Jerry Sienfield's butler?

That's horrible. In related news, the Bible says the exact same thing..that a rapist is to marry his victim:

"If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives." Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NIV

Yes but doesn't the Christian faith say that the coming of Jesus invalidated alot of the old testament laws?

Yep.. but that hasnt stopped fire and brimestone fundies using the OT to spread their hate whenever it suites them.... and so much for objective morality. Lets face it, these books were written by an ancient civilization, who didnt think much of women, or humans in general. Even the NT as some bizzare / stupid / hatefull stuff in there.

Edit: The thing is these books are soo damn vague, and open to interpretation, they can hardly be used as the basis for any law in any country.

Her current husband should "rape" her after she marries her father in law. Wouldn't that invalidate her marriage to him, and she'd have to marry her husband? Or is it only the first guy who rapes you? Man, laws like this are just SICK.

Ah! I just got it.. the OT in the case doesn't refer to the Off Topic forum's TOS..

That's actually NOT what it says, regardless of whether or not you agree with what it actually says (which you have every right to disagree with). But it doesn't say what you're here insisting it does.

Slurpy

*drowns in jizz*
'But a top Muslim body in India has rejected the argument saying it is not valid under Sharia (Islamic) law.'

This is completely true. This shit has NOTHING to do with Sharia law. And I doubt the fuckers that made the ruling know the first thing about Islam.

Oh, and her husband should take this shit into his own hands. His DAD raped his wife.
