Video Card Problems Radeon 9800 PRO

Finally got me some cable internet and Battlefield 2, and now I can't play it!

Any game I try to load up has some serious issues, things turning black, missing textures, geometry popping in and out, garbled textures, slow-down, etc. I've tried taking out and re-docking my video card. I've even tried to dust it (and my fans) off in case it was overheating itself. I've deleted and reinstalled the catalyst drivers, reinstalled DirectX 9.0c, and so on. I've done everything that I think someone should do when they have problems like this. I don't want to have to attempt to reinstall Windows again, especially after JUST doing this less than a month ago.

Any help, please? :(

Yeah, its really bumming me out. Just yesterday it was working. Then, today, I tried loading up both HL2 and BF2 and both were having similar problems. I just don't know if I can afford a new one right now. :(

Welcome to the club, and get a replacement card ready.

Only got 22 months of use out of it. Last ATI product I buy.

1. Uninstall ATI drivers
2. Download DriverCleaner
3. Reboot, Safe Mode
4. Use DriverCleaner for all ATI methods, also clean driver.cab and SP2.cab.
5. Reboot.
6. Ignore "new hardware found" boxes if they appear.
7. Install the NGO Radeon drivers (http://www.ngohq.com/) - these kick Catalyst drivers in the ass.
8. If this didn't work, your card is likely overheating and you need to replace it.

Even if it doesn't work, the NGO drivers still might come in handy because I believe you can actually underclock your GPU with it, which may allow it to run at such a temp that does not produce those artifacts. Might not be suitable for gaming, but if your card ever gets so bad that it produces artifacts on the desktop, you could try that. Not every card lets you overclock/underclock, but it's worth having around in case things get worse.

I had a similar problem; got it fixed however;

go into your CCC (catlyst control center) and go to SMARTGART

it should say AGP is set to 4x and fast writes are ON

change fast writes to OFF, and all should be fixed; i'm on a 9700 pro, however.

Ah, smartgart. This may not solve your problem, but it could boost performance.

If you have an intel system, something about old intel chipset drivers creates some sort of conflict with it, so no matter what "fastwrite" (? I don't remember the name) is always disabled, and it always says that it's running on AGPX4.

I ignored this until my 9800 was performing like shit on new benchmarks. Turned out that conflict was screwing up the performance with new game engines.

the performance solution is to install the latest intel chipset drivers for your particular chipset.
