Video-out for PSP...

Kiriku

SWEDISH PERFECTION
Visiting Bandai's booth at E3, something caught my attention. They had Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex on display for PSP, but it was different from all other PSP units at E3 (as far as I could see):

Not the best picture and probably nothing new but it caught my attention, having the PSP screen displayed on a big screen like that. Does this mean there's already a solution for how to connect your PSP to a TV? Or is it a more complicated matter that only developers are able to utilize? I forgot to check how the PSP actually was connected to the bigger screen, but wouldn't it be through USB? The game was displayed on both the PSP and the LCD screen BTW.

OK, so it's through a devkit...:/
I'm not much into tech stuff, so I'm wondering...would it be technically possible to play PSP games on a TV in any way?

a vid-out thingy should be distributed to gaming websites for both PSP and DS so they can do video reviews and get a good quality vids of games...

I'm not up on how they do it, but from ogling the dev kit units at E3, it seems to me that they replace the UMD drive with video circuitry with a thick cable snaking out the back -- and the games probably run off of memory sticks.... which sure makes checking out load times impossible.

the devkits are super-finicky and require downloadable updates constantly. i get the impression that they are a hassle to keep in line. which is why sony is not giving them to websites. all the psp video you see on the web was either recorded from a devkit during a visit with a developer who had a unit handy, or shot off the screen. though, if you take your time, you can get some pretty nice footage with a nice camera.

what I heard is that the dev psp's are pretty barebones (no actual umd drive or memory stick slot) and it's the beige box that does most (if not all) of the work.

though I'm sure a experienced psp developer can clear this up for us (fafalda?)

No, they do have a UMD drive and MS slot. The newer ones do, at any rate. It's essentially, like all dev kits, a PC - but with that corded PSP attached. Can do simultaneous video out to a monitor or the screen in the dummy handheld. The speakers, stick, buttons, and screen in the dummy handheld are all a little different (in terms of quality) to final retail versions, too. I'll let other people decide whether that's a bad thing or not and impacts on how developers make games for the set up.

The PSP devkits and debug kits have a VGA out.
The only way to display it on TV is by using a downscan converter. At least that's how we're doing it.

I'd buy a PSP if it had a video out. I still don't understand why portables don't have this. :(

This needs to be quoted 100 times. Didn't the freakin Nomad support this? That was over 10 years ago!

You're talking in terms of relativity...I was simply using a straight up comparison.

And BTW, Nomad went about three hours on batteries, which I guess was a decent leap forward (in relative terms) since the less powerful Game Gear got about the same amount of battery life.
