Videocardz - AMD confirms Ryzen 7 9850X3D, an even faster 8-core CPU with 3D V-Cache

Binned and factory PBO'ed 9800X3D chip to make fake "new" models due to Zen 6's significant potentially year long delay. Akin to Intel's old XX90 SKU's (i.e. 4770K Vs. 4790K), basically meaningless real world gains.

For what it's worth, it was an actual posting of a drivers page on the site which was then hastily pulled

The "9950X3D2" (terrible name if true but on brand for AMD) would be the more interesting part because it would be X3D cache on both CCD's, whereas the current 9950X3D the X3D cache on only 1 of the 2 CCD's

The extra boost clock on the "9850X3D" likely wouldn't do much in games
There's no benefit to 3D cache on both dies. A) the number of applications that can benefit from more than 8 threads is super rare and B) any that would benefit from more than 8 threads and the extra cache would immediately have their gains cancelled out by the interconnect latency penalty. It's a waste.

400 MHz higher boost clock, same TDP compared to 9800X3D. Obviously it's not a big deal, but hey, it's a small improvement on the current best gaming chip.

They can milk it as much as they want. I am ok with 9800x3d for years to come.

And even if I ever want to upgrade. It's gonna be the next gen AM6 cpu. Not a side cpu. This is a waste of money and shitty practice

Yes, but its targeted at the ridiculous FOMO factor present in so many PC gamers, who will keep dropping a seemingly bottomless pitt of money on anything for the few extra percieved FPS.

..these people just crave the dopamine rush that putting new stuff in their rig gives them.

Seems like it would be more for new buyers of AM5 cpus or possibly 7000 series owners. Not really for people who already have a 9800x3d.
Like Intel with their S cpus, 14900KS is not really geared towards owners of the 14900K.

If AMD can sell it at a similar price point then it should be fine. Or lower the current price of the 9800x3d while releasing this newer version.

Will it actually be a gaming situation where you'd be CPU limited with a 9800X3D in the next couple of years? Probably not.
