6.5 Presentation
Generally decent menu system and production values. Nothing really sticks out as glaringly awful or genuinely cool.
5.5 Graphics
Very bland textures and stiff animation. Design of the characters and world ripped from previous Sega titles.
6.0 Sound
Quirky and otherwise corny voice overs and music. Cool music from the original Virtua Fighter.
6.5 Gameplay
Not bad, yet nothing to get excited about. The action and platform elements feel dull after hours of play, and the difficulty suffers from a lack of balance.
6.0 Lasting Appeal
A pretty short game with not much to offer apart from the main quest.
6.6 OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

"Virtua Quest offers an interesting blend of RPG elements and action. Plus, it makes decent use of the Virtua Figher name, including dozens of memorable characters and special moves. Unfortunately, the separate elements never quite come together, and each suffers from a lack of attention. The action is mediocre at best, and the platform elements feel sloppy and unrefined. The graphics and sound are equally forgetful. The only glaring problem comes by way of the silly camera. It really gets in your way and detracts from the overall experience. Still, there’s a lot to like for diehard fans and those looking for a simple romp in cyberspace. The depth of the character customization, coupled with the Virtua Fighter mythos and special moves, make it a definite rental for the curious."

Sega's gone to shit.

I remember how much excitement there was when this was first announced.
The VF name plus tidbits of info (like the VF RPG tentative title) made it sound much, much more grand than this. i'd much rather Sega just use new franchises that may bear striking resemblances to current ones, because VF is one of those which games which still commands attention among many of us.

Just watched the IGN movies...oh my god nooo, each of the VF characters now has an English voice... and the dialogue is sooo cheesy...

Akira: "WHY DO YOU WISH TO BE STRONG!?"

Weird, I remember people slamming the shit out of it and saying it looked "kiddie." I still think it looks pretty fun!

First announced. Like, before we knew it looked mediocre.

one would never thought Sega would do such a thing to one of their most beloved franchises.

they turned a fighting franchise to a mediocre action adventure / platforming game. And that's not the end of the story, if Sega somehow figured out that if the main character looks mature (like Shenmue) they might actually be able to fool some people into buying the thing, but NNNnnoooo ... we want to put some 14 years old kid in the game as main character.

It's like they wanted to make something VF related on the GC, so they announced it without really giving much though to what kind of game it would turn out to be (its genre was 'undecided' for a long time), and at the end just gave it to the janitor to finish and get it over with.

There were signs before it was even shown. Remember when the character proportions were first revealed? There was a lot of whining right there.

that was mostly because it was exclusive back then

And that we thought that it would be an RPG like Shenmue featuring VF characters.

:cry

someone post the pic of igncube crying from E3...

I sure as hell didn't care, and neither did the majority.

And definitely not a "sign" that the game would be poor. Just 'kiddy-fied'.

Indeed, much how Shenmue was supposed to be the killer app that would save the Dreamcast.......
