Virtual Game Card announced from Nintendo (Switch 1 & 2 Supported)

Steam, Xbox and (I think) PS have game sharing at some level without all this nonsense.

My pals have almost full access to my Steam library bar a few titles for example.

Steams current system is BY FAR the best for sure.

the only issue on Steam is that publisher's can opt out of Family Sharing, which IMO should not be allowed.

but, it's their loss. I generally do not buy games that don't allow for family sharing, mainly because I think it's insane buying a game and it not being allowed for others in the same household and on the same PC to play it... that's just an instant no-buy, and the #1 reason I would never buy a game on the Epic Store, EA, or Ubisoft.

on PC I exclusively buy games on the Microsoft Store, Steam and GoG, because they allow for family sharing 🙂... I mean, GoG allows for whatever you want sharing even I guess 😂

At the end of the day, none of them want you to only buy one copy of a game when you'd otherwise buy two or three.

It doesn't seem any more or less onerous on PlayStation (and honestly it sounds just as 'hacky' as the Switch):
You just set your mates "other" console as your home console and vice versa that's it. No need for the consoles to handshake or none of this 2 weeks nonsense.

Steam does it best of course.

if you have 2 of the same consoles in your household, the way Xbox and PlayStation work (and how the Switch currently still works) is way better than what Nintendo's new system seems to entail.

I can buy 1 digital copy of a game, and can play it at the same time on 2 consoles. this means if I wanna play a game in Coop, like Remnant 2 for example, I buy it once and I play on my secondary console while the other person plays on the main console. all we need is 1 PS+/XBL subscription and 1 digital copy of the game, and 2 people can play it together.

with these digital carts now, it seems like this is no longer possible, while the same method would have been possible on Switch with their current system (although maybe I am wrong and the old system is still somewhat in place, and this cart thing is just an additional function somehow).

tho, technically on Switch you'd need 2 NSO subscriptions because the way these work is stuck in the Xbox 360 era... one of many reasons I refuse to pay for that insult of a subscription service... Xbox Live and PS+ are already pushing it, but NSO is a joke.
on Xbox and PS as long as 1 user that is subscribed has the console set to the home console, everyone on that system can play online even if they aren't subscribed

Question I still have:
If you lend a game, will you be able to still play it while they don't use it, or will you be locked out of that game until the person returns it (or the time expires)? (As if you didn't have the game).

Is there any reason to think you'll be able to play your game when you loan out your game? Because that's not how it work with physical game

From what I can tell that means you can only share between two consoles, unless you wnat to frequently rejig accounts.

It sounds like Sony intended it to be you can log into your account on someone else's console if you are away from yours. That you can set it up so you can share games is something they just put up with to enable that. It's not really meant for sharing games.

As for Steam, I think they do the industry more harm than good by driving down the value of games well below what they are worth. Also, their DRM has left me unable to play the games I paid for before, so I have no love for Valve.

Seems kinda shit. I would consider getting a second switch if we could share 1 copy of a game and play co-op. Needing 2 copies to have 2 separate screens in the same house is trash. It basically forces you to do split screen instead of lan co-op.

No.
This is basically a system to move around your games between various consoles. But a game can never be active on more than one console at a time.
If you "lend" a game to one of your kids you won't be able to use it on your system until they "return" it (or after 2 weeks, when the license transfer will be reverted automatically)
You also can't lend a single game to various consoles (but you can lend different games to different consoles)

There's no physical component to this.
The virtual game cards are just a cute way to represent your digital licenses.
When you "lend" a game you are basically doing a temporary transfer of your digital license to another system. It also automatically reverts after 2 weeks.
Darn. It's better than what we have today but still not as good as what we have with PlayStation.
I can buy a digital game
Can 2 players both play with 1 physical disc on 2 separate consoles ?
no but I was hoping this change would put it more in line with what I have on PlayStation. I can buy a digital game and my kids can play it at the same time as me on two different consoles.

Sorry for double posting, the image didn't load with the first one.

Before you could share just like Xbox and Playstation with a primary console that let anyone play offline, and then on other consoles you could only play with the owner signed into the internet.

So you just used your own console always online and then set your friends console to be your primary so they could play all your games too.

This new feature lets you lend games to other people's consoles and they can play them offline on any account.... But it's also limited to a single game and while you lend a title you can't play it yourself.

It has advantages but also disadvantages to what was already in place....

Not sure I like it more. Useful for sharing between more consoles but people that only shared with one friend it's worse as you will lose access to the game you are sharing and can't give your friend your entire library.

So you can only lend one game, until the person is done.

I hope you can relinquish rights, and boot them if need be so you aren't waiting forever.
