My parents are from Pakistan and I was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta. I was only there for a couple of weeks when my dad (who worked in the oilfield) was transfered to Mount Pleasant, Michigan until I was 4. We then moved to Estevan, Saskatchewan where I lived there until I was 8. My dad was then transfrered to Edmonton, Alberta where we stayed until I was 11. Then it was to Red Deer, Alberta until I graduated from High School and then I moved down to Calgary and I've been here ever since.
I was in elementary while I lived in Saskatchewan and never had a single experience of racism even though I was the only "brown" person in my class and one of the few in the entire school. Maybe kids that age are too young to care about things like that.
Edmonton was awesome, class was mixed with black, East Indian, asisan, etc. No experience of racism.
Red Deer was a different story, Middle School was very tough there with alot of racial slurs thrown towards me and I really didn't have too many friends based on that. Red Deer has changed a little bit now, it's almost 100,000 people and I see alot more visable minorities so who knows if Middle School and High School life is more accepting.
I have had no incidents in Calgary but then again I went to post-secondary here and now work downtown. People in this city are really right-wing and are anti-immigration etc, I hear it all the time in other offices with their beliefs but I'm treated with respect so I don't have beef with their conservative minds.
