Visit Nintendo World in NYC

Interactive entertainment fans soon will have a first-ever destination to immerse themselves in their favorite games: the Nintendo World Store. Planned for a spring opening in New York City's Rockefeller Center, the two-story mega-complex will showcase the best of Nintendo, the worldwide leader in interactive entertainment.

Nintendo World will also be the new home of Pokémon Center, which will feature exclusive Pokémon merchandise and host special Pokémon events (visit pokemon.com to get the latest news and updates). Pokémon Center at Nintendo World will continue to be the official headquarters for everything Pokémon.

The Nintendo World Store will be a place where visitors can check out the best new and unreleased games for Nintendo DS™, Nintendo GameCube™ and Game Boy® Advance SP at high-end sampling bars and interactive stations. Visitors will enjoy two floors of all things Nintendo, such as games, merchandise, accessories, DVDs and trading cards for the wildly popular Pokémon® franchise. Stay tuned to nintendoworldstore.com for updates.

Since the release of its first home video game system in 1983, Nintendo has sold more than 1.9 billion video games and more than 336 million hardware units globally, creating enduring industry icons such as Mario™ and Donkey Kong® and launching popular culture franchise phenomena such as Metroid®, Zelda™ and Pokémon.

Who's down to camp out here for the Revolution launch?

The first thing that crossed my mind was a terribly tasteless joke. :(

EDIT: I'll probably visit it next year during the big ol' road trip we're planning...

If I could I would, be then again I'm pretty sure I could walk into Mejier's or Walmart at midnight and pick it up real easy. PSP lauch my Target had only 4 people waiting in line at midnight.

Rockefeller Center?

But the Pokemon Store is there thats where I got my DS from when every other place was sold out

Did they close the Pokemon Store for this new store?

edit: I should have read beyond the first few sentences :)

I'd probably be more excited if they hadn't said Pokemon about 20 times in that release. Company stores are really overrated IMO. I've never been that impressed with the Metreon on any of my visits there.

I have been their a bunch of times back when it was the Pokemon store, they also sold non Pokemon nintendo stuff their like gamecube, and non-poekmon nintendo games. I was their when had a big bash when Pokemon Colloseum was released for GC and sold the game early. I got a nice bag of pokemon swag that day, I'll definetly show up during the grand opening and get some more Nintendo swag.

This is cool.

Maybe they'll have stuff like E3 demos for play at the Rockefeller Center for those on the East Coast who can't attend E3.

Don't they have a shop in NOA at Redmond with like every single Nintendo game ever made?

My other question is this ... for those of us not in NYC, doesn't the Pokemon Center (now Nintendo World) allow you to shop online?

It'd be nice to be able to cop some cool Nintendo World gear w/o having to go to NYC.

Yeah NOA store is where you can get games weeks sometimes before launch

... I'm ashamed to say I don't know. I live in Northern Oregon, and I plan on going to Redmond for this sole purpose at least once. I guess I've been waiting for them to say something like " hey come to NOA and download DS games. " I'd be there in a second :lol

336M? It's way more than that...

70M GB
50M GBC
65M GBA
-185M Game Boys

70M NES
55M SNES
35M N64
20M GC
-180M consoles

...and that doesn't include other platforms (VB, DS, PokeMini) or add-ons (FDS, Super GB, 64DD, GB Player) or earlier TV/Game&Watch systems.

Some of your estimates are a bit generous there, the GCN is not at 20 mill yet, the NES capped at 65 million, the SNES at 49 million, and the N64 at 33 million (these are Nintendo's own numbers, so don't shoot the messenger).

Also 50M for the GBC seems high.

I don't think they count stuff like the 64DD or Virtual Boy.

I thought NES was 69M? I've seen SNES at 55M before too. The only Nintendo figures we had were semi-out of date I thought though?

Nintendo's number is about 49M as of March 2002 iirc. GB & GBC combined did 120M, so it works. GBC sold amazingly well, so much so that GBA was delayed 2 years. GBC might actually be the best selling game platform in history considering it's tiny lifespan.

Why not? VB cleared 2 million, SGB cleared 8M-ish I think. That stuff adds up

Semi-OT: Anyone know if NOA HQ does tours or what it's like up there? I've always wanted to go but just didn't know if it's worth the trip.

I think NOA does still do tours but you should probably call them or email them to find out for sure.

Pokemon Center turning into Nintendo World was inevitable, I've been waiting for years for it to happen.

Nintendo probably has a long term lease on the property and now that Pokemon has cooled off a bit in the US, it only makes sense to convert that retail space into a broader showcase for Nintendo products/characters.

Besides, Nintendo has a lot more money than the WWE does :)

They do stuff like midnight launches for Revolution and Game Boy Next now too, like Sony does with the Meteron shop in San Fran.

Okay found the exact numbers (as of December 2004)...

NES~ 61.78M
SNES~ 49.02M
N64~ 32.93M
GC~ 18.02M

GB~ 69.42M
GBC~ 49.27M
GBA~ 65.74M

DS~ 2.84M

...336M is still way low.

By like... 4 percent.

It makes sense to make a switch from a narrow "Pokemon Center" outlet to a broader Nintendo-based one now more than ever, with Nintendo also entering animation, Nintendo World can stock/carry merchandise from Nintendo's animation studio.

You could maybe buy stuff like Nintendo Animation art books, cells, lithographs, character statuettes, etc.

hey someone go take Pics for GAF of the site

ATTN: Goodcow, are you still filming NYC subways?

I'm too lazy to take the Metro North right now but I may go check it out

By 13.02 million... and again, that's not all Nintendo hardware even. I bet the software sales are low too.

I'm pretty sure the press release is only going by the numbers that Nintendo of America is giving them.

Besides, the press release says Nintendo's sold "more" than 336 million pieces of hardware, not exactly 336 million.

I wonder which lease cost more?

WWE = Times Square (year round traffic)

Nintendo World = Rockefeller Center (holiday season madhouse)
i remember my boss talking about his conversation with a pizza store owner in times square... the rent was 30k a month...

Passed by the old Pokemon Store about 2 weeks ago. Nothing but banners and "Spring 2005" signs, yet.

Did it have anything to do with an airplane? Because that's the first thing that jumed into my head when I read your post.

Mwahahaha, I'm so horrible sometimes.

Nintendo should open a Nintendo World store around the Graumann's/Kodak Theater complex in Hollywood.

They hold their E3 briefings just down the street and seem to be fond of the area.

I thought an expansion of Nintendo World is in the cards and the one in NYC is just a model store for them.

I dunno, intially this whole thing started off as those Pokemon Center stores in Japan, then I guess when Pokemon became so huge in North America they decided to open one in NYC.

Now Pokemon Center is being converted to Nintendo World.

I hope they do have plans for more stores. Having one in the Kodak Theater on Hollywood Boulevard would be great.

Nintendo also had their Los Angeles Cube Club and a lot of their celebrity parties in that same little area.
