Visual Novel recommendations

Since my right arm became a useless appendix because of a tendon lesion, and I don't mind reading lots of text, I'm looking for visual novels for Playstation (or pc as long as they can run on a Linux powered potato ).
The important is that they are not about dating girls and don't shove boobs or any other lady parts on my face (I'm very very gay!)

Is there anything that has a decent adult story or should i just stick to reading books?

Steins;gate and House in Fata Morgana are the gold standard for me.
Also
Steins;gate 0, Clannad, Tsukihime, Witch on the Holy Night (prequel to Tsukihime), Planetarian, Chaos;head and Chaos;child (not sure if Head if on PS/Linux), Robotics;notes is supposed to be good as well.

Witch on the Holy Night is amazing and it does not have any romance (because unlike other Type Moon VNs, it did not originate as a pron PC game).

Steins Gate has a love story but it is central to the story and one of the best Sci-Fi story I ever read/saw, and I am a big Sci-Fi fan. But getting into it requires patience because the main character is made to not be very likable for a pretty long part at the beginning. And Elite is forbidden, you need to play the original to enjoy all the fantastic lore as well as visuals and BG.

Not a VN, but I also tend to recommend watching the Garden of Sinners / Kara no Kyoukai. Again, a strong love story based on Type Moon novels, but not based on pron material, and ufotable's best work as far as I am concerned. That's 7 movies.

If you have an Evercade, you can play my Game Gear game (it's included for free). It's a narrative adventure game haha :)

Quoting myself from a few months ago. There's little in the way of genuinely adult stuff afaik but there's still some fun stuff out there.

I'm no aficionado, but I've played my fair share. There's a lot of different categories, from those with branching paths to linear stories to ones which mix in actual gameplay elements.

My #1 rec right now for a pure VN is likely type/moon's Witch on the Holy Night. It's a relatively short, linear VN that is much more penetrable than nasu's usual stuff which can have a reputation of being very lore heavy (and long). The core cast is absolutely fantastic with great performances too, and it's the most beautiful VN I've ever seen.

Comments on other VNs I've read/seen come up in the topic-

Clannad: Branching romcom VN. Very long, very sappy. I don't think it earns 90% of its emotional shots.
Danganronpa: Murder mystery/social sim games. I like these games. Even chapter to chapter can be wildly inconsistent though. The 2nd game has one of my favorite twists in anything ever but the opposite side of that coin is some ugly storytelling to get to an end. All of these games are very stylish though, and they do a good job balancing such seemingly clashing genres as murder mystery and social sim.
Phoenix Wright: Murder mystery procedurals. First trilogy connected with me... when I was younger. I tried the later entries many years later and found the slapstick didn't land at all. Don't know if I just outgrew them. I think Nick's low key cynicism helped connect me to the world though so I think the later games are just rubbish?
Doki Doki Literature Club: Branching romcom VN. Mileage here is entirely dependent on how familiar you are with anime tropes. Very short (to its benefit).
Stein's Gate: Absolute trash. VNbros raising this up as a gold standard generally informs you as to their taste. The POV character is so obnoxious I actively wanted him to fail. Disclaimer: I'm basing my opinion on the anime, but nothing I've read from others has led me to believe he's any less horrible in the VN.
Tsukihime Remake (part 1): Branching action/horror/romcom VN. Almost as beautiful as Witch on the Holy Night but much longer. Vestiges from the original are all over the place, some worse than others (and I say that as a guy who didn't even read the original). I recommend reading after Witch if you want more type/moon. Overall it's a step down but provides many of the same unique experiences you'd find in a type/moon novel. Also, as the 'part 1' makes clear, TsukiRE is not finished, containing only two, complete story routes. No release date for part 2.
Fate/stay night: Same genres as last. Again, I think this is weaker than Witch, visually by a wide margin and writing... not as much. The POV character being a bit more nuanced and interesting than Tsukihime's helps with that; it's also structured better. This is a legendary VN though and unlike some of the other 'greats' I see recommended Fate's not a miserable read. But I like type/moon so bear that in mind.

You state that Steins Gate is trash lol ?

And OP doesn't want dating and you recommend Tsukihime ? That VN has its pron origins written all over, it greatly overstays its welcome on top of having repetitive scenes. From Type Moon only Witch on the Holy Night fits the request, as far as I am concerned.

I've played steins;gate and it was really good science fiction thriller, although it's full of anime otaku culture. So it depends on your preference on those storytelling cliches.

<<< Everyone will suggest weeb VNs, so allow me offer something different >>>

PC only. Interesting world building and setting. It's also a light point and click game where you can actually die. Made by Russian furries. It's so old it was actually in the Steam Greenlight. A third chapter seems to being worked on.

Consoles & PC. Point and click with lots of story and puzzles. Great voice acting and art. Criminally underrated and it should have been a cartoon tbh. Story goes to fucking strange places, Event Horizon (the movie) levels even.

Consoles & PC. More involved than the other suggestions with deck building/dating, but there's still plenty of dialogue.

> for Playstation

You'd be better off playing something like Honkai: Star Rail. Even with one hand, it's probably doable. Lots of VN-style quests and story missions that are actually enjoyable (unlike most VNs). Combat gameplay is turn-based.

Everything is so... Japanese.
Aren't there any western developers making VNs? (that aren't inclusivity checkboxes)
I guess Telltale (Wolf Among Us) or Supermassive games (Until Dawn) could do it for you? The "mainstream" of the VN genre is basically all weeb shit so you're fighting an uphill battle there.

I've heard great things about Dispatch but haven't tried it yet.

The Zero Escape series is Japanese but still pretty tame compared to other big names in the genre. 999 and Virtue's Last Reward are at the peak of the genre imo so don't let any preconceived notions stop you on those.

Yeah, Tsukihime's likely not a good fit (and I did describe it as such as a romcom; I read the opening post!).

Stein's Gate is absolutely trash though. It unabashedly caters to fetishes while faffing about for entirely too long with a despicable protagonist*. Just reiterating, my opinion is based off watching the animated adaptation, but nothing I've heard from anyone has led me to believe the nature of my complaints are addressed any better in the original. If anything, they're probably worse because VNs tend to be wordy.

*In particular, the chuuni personality he adopts is explained but entirely inadequately. It's obnoxious on a surface level and the story doesn't bother explaining why he acts that way around everyone. The whacky array of characters he encounters in the first half likewise have explanations for who and why they are, but again not particularly adequately. The cat girl cafe owner is a pretty good example of a personality whose existence was more important than properly fitting in with the story.

I will use this thread. The few I've played, I liked. Both had gamey elements though. Paradise Killer has the whole 3d island to explore and 13 sentinals had the battles between chapters. Both had a wayof anchoring them as games, to me. But I'm willing to try some that are pure vn.

Unless you're publishing a free early access porn ren'py novel on itch io. Thats the realm of spanish speaking countries.

Dont ask me how i know this
I was really enjoying Lustful Desires artstyle and character development but the constant need to have sex with people to progress easily and all the non humans (orcs, lizardmen, furry creatures, etc) were a massive turn off and I gave up.

I think you got the character wrong and just didn't try to relate in any way.

His way of interacting with others and his fictional role as a mad scientist should be seen as an escape route for someone facing his own social difficulties at interacting with the world and people around him. The guy is basically alone, you almost never hear of his family, so this is a shield. There are many instances where he is quite serious even before shit becomes real. But it never lasts. However, once shit becomes real, he drops the act. And the irony of it all, is that he was perfectly aware that all of this was an act... until it became real.

Pretty great character. But the best characters don't have to be the most likable. This is also how you make a good character.

Also the anime is way to fast, just as is Elite.

Sorry, can't help you out with VN reccomendations.

But when I hurt my right hand some years ago I remapped the action/cancel buttons on one of my retro handhelds to the L1/L2 and loaded it up with turn based NES/SMS/GB/GBC/GG (2 button systems) games.

Hope you get back usability of your hand soon. 🤞

I recently injured myself as well. I might just do this. Do you have any game recommendations?

Yep, surprisingly MC is a more complex character than you would think. And the VN is such a good sci-fi story that otaku stuff doesn't detract too much from it.

It's a seriously great sci-fi novel shoved into a VN format.

Separately Ace Attorney series is great and I quite liked Great Ace Attorney which is set in early 20th century Japan.

Edit: Forgot about Shibuya Scramble. It's a great VN type game but it utilizes actual video for its passages.

The other option are a variety of Telltale games. Expanse, Batman, Wolf Amongst Us were great.

Oh and the first Life is Strange (and only the first) is quite good as well.

Sadly not Playstation, but maybe the Professor Layton series. There's some on iOS and Android.

Not that my opinion matters as I'm not a fan of anime (not since the late 90's), but I saw Steins Gate get mentioned. I gave the anime for that a try as the premise sounded interesting. Jesus fuck I wanted to throw my TV and anything near me out of the window when that annoying girl stepped into a scene with her stupid ditzy sound bite. Anime shows seem to cycle a handful of annoying as fuck character archetypes, like the sexually repressed teenage boy. It's a shame because there's a great deal of creativity in the overarching story ideas. /rant.

Sure, I can dig up my favourite-list from that time. But it's going to be quite rpg heavy, if that's ok I'll gladly whip it up a bit later.
Depends, is the combat turn based?
I can't do live action anymore because of the injury.

Edit: because of the notifications and amount of answers I didn't notice that you were answering to somebody else.

fata morgana, muramasa, steins gate, sakura wars, muv-luv alternative, maggot baits. Just to get your toes dipped in.
Also if you want more gameplay go for Suda51 old games

Shibuya Scramble is wonderful.

Not a VN, but sort of like one if you can get your hands on it: Shadow of Destiny (Shadow of Memories everywhere other than the US). One of the most awesome games I've ever played. Even back when I was a kid, when I played it, I knew I'd never play anything else like it. God, I hate to say I was right.

I love that game.

Thank you for all the recommendations, I'll look through them this week.
I also found a game called "The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante" that seems interesting and maybe Coffee Talk, but having to draw coffee art is not my thing.
