Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars (new Yoko Taro game)

Are you sure? At this timestamp in the video it looks like a card battle system, albeit one where the cards flip around.
It's basically the same as a menu in a JRPG, with cards instead of words.

If you hate the look of cards though, this game will make you kill yourself. It's literally all cards lol. But it's not what you think. Just will have to try it if interested I guess.

Interesting. I dunno if I can stomach a whole game with cards like that, but I'll give the demo a shot, thanks for the info!

This game is amazing. Day 1.

Finished the demo. This is now my most wanted game next year. It really feels like a lovingly crafted campaign from a DM. Would you want Yoko Taro to be your DM in a tabletop game? Of course you would. I love the little random overworld events. Great art, great music and the narrator is butter. My only concern would be the difficulty which was trivial in the demo.

Fuck it. I'll give it a try. Not into card games, but will give this a shot because of taro and the music guy.

hope they are working on something else as well.

This demo was about showing you its concept and and aesthetics, I would imagine the full game is gonna be much tougher.

This game is coming out this year in October 28th.

This year? Nice.

It needs to be much tougher, it's hard to judge how interesting it will be based on how trivial the demo is.

In this game you very low level fighting low level monsters, I wouldn't judge the difficulty based on this demo.

You are level 10. I think I took 5 damage in total. It's not a good showcase of the combat system when you aren't forced to use recovery spells or items and there is little strategy in playing the cards. The most interesting part was card game at the tavern. I'm still really excited but they could have done a better job in this aspect of the demo.

I agree but this demo was about selling you on its concept rather than give you difficult battle.

And it does a poor job of showing of the concept of the battle system. It's not about being hard but being brain dead is another matter all together.

Well we will see in a full game, for me the demo did its job and sold me on the game.

Edit: reminder, the demo act as prologue to main game.

I was very disappointed that this would be a card battler when I saw this. Luckily, I played the demo, and it turns out to be a good old jrpg. Just make it more challenging.

Lol I was sold when I got to the first town, it's like final fantasy and corneria

Welcome to nexton!
Talk to him again..
Welcome to nexton.
Ask him about the theft
He leans forward and whispers in your ear "..welcome to nexton."

I liked it* quite a bit. A very fitting game for the Switch. It could be more challenging though.

Clearly the big issue for this game is being able to define itself for the consumers. As can be seen in this thread, people were very confused that this was some kind of "Card RPG" which implies so many different mechanics. Where as, it is instead a traditional RPG, but just made out of cards.

It's a tough thing to distinguish, but that's why they thankfully put out a demo. Also fortunate that this is clearly a very budget game and should not need a lot of sales to have an ROI.

I think the NPC and Monster back story is gonna work same way as weapon story in Drakengard/ NieR series.

So I played about 20 minutes. I LOVE the aesthetics, artwork, sound design, and music. The writing is very elegant. I just wish characters had actual voice acting instead of the narrator speaking for them. That would've made the story a lot more immersive. But the first battle is enjoyable and I love that they took the weapon stories from Nier and applied them to NPCs. It rewards talking to them and makes them interesting.

Day 1 for me! One of my favorite recent showings. I think the narrator fits well, like a game master for a tabletop rpg. Reminds me as well of Dragon's Crown which I love. The music and especially art is gorgeous.

I like it. Only things I would change is that while I love the narrator, the characters on the cards should have their own voice actors.
I'm also confused because the official description of the game looks like we will not be playing as the characters in the demo, but three other characters instead? That's kind of disappointing if true because I liked those three. Especially the design of the purple haired girl.

I still would very much like those characters to still be in the full game though. Like other rpgs add more to the group as the story progresses.
Based on the trailer we saw in direct those characters in the demo will be on the full game.

Played the demo and it's pretty good. The overworld music ranges from annoying Hearthstone music to a Square symphony. Voice acting is good. There is JP and EN voices. Battle system is a turn based JRPG with a little bit of strategic resource management. You have a party of 3, but it seems that you can swap them out with more. There aren't any in the demo. Overall it's a good and different aesthetic to a JRPG. The demo sold me on it and pre-ordered.

You have to wonder how far Yoko Taro is going to go with breaking the fourth wall. Is the DM going to flip the table and cause the cards to scatter at one point? Can you catch him cheating or will be become angry if you play differently than how he expects?

Day one.

I just finished the demo. I love it. I hope the game ramps up in difficulty a bit, as it felt like it was impossible to lose in the demo. But, that's normal in modern early game portions of JRPGs, so hopefully that's why.

Totally. Not a chance this plays out like an usual rpg. Not with Taro writing it and not having to conform his ideas with cutting edge graphics (ie, expensive). He can be very experimental in how he tells a story.

the potential for this is sky high and could truly be something unique. Who knows, but I'll be there day one
