Evidence is mounting that it's not just mosquitoes that can pass the disease from person to person: Zika can be spread through sex, too.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just announced it's investigating 14 cases of sexual transmission of Zika in the United States. The cases all involved male travelers who recently visited a region with a Zika outbreak and then returned to the United States, where they reportedly passed on the virus to their female partners.

More alarming info at the link. With the three known cases of Zika detected in pregnant women, and as it spreads across the country, we might be headed to a future where you need to get tested for Zika relatively often.

For now, the CDC has issued interim guidance on safe sex during a Zika outbreak: Men who have traveled or lived in countries where Zika is circulating and have female partners who are pregnant should either avoid sex or use condoms for vaginal, anal, and oral sex for the duration of the pregnancy.

...

"The science is not clear on how long the risk should be avoided," the CDC said in its announcement. That's because researchers don't know how long the virus can live in the semen — and how long it remains infectious. In the UK, researchers found virus in a man's semen 62 days after he got sick.

I'm trying my best to not let the media-hype-train scare me, but as someone who was planning a trip to the Galapagos with my wife and also planning on trying to have a kid in the next couple of months, we're rethinking travel there. Information about Zika is changing daily, the risk just seems too high right now.

The Ministry of Health is investigating whether Zika virus has been sexually transmitted in New Zealand.

A man became ill after visiting a country where Zika virus is being actively transmitted, and has tested positive for the virus.

His female partner, who has not recently travelled to a Zika-affected country, has also tested positive for Zika.

There is limited scientific evidence to suggest the virus can be sexually transmitted however the local public health service is continuing to investigate how the woman became infected.

Zika sure gets around a bit.

That's a fabulously way to learn your boyfriend is a cheating dick

Also (in addition to the poster above me), I don't think there have been any cases of a woman transmitting the virus to a man, through sex (although, I guess it could bring to light an affair with another man, if the boyfriend isn't a traveler?)
