VP:Silmeria & Lenneth US Bound? - First Hints

Awesome! Who would've guessed that trademarks would emerge as one of the best indicators of games being localized? :D

So many titles have been discovered this way. Now Suikoden 1&2 and Tales of Eternia just need to make it and SCEA will be redeemed. Let's hope.

Heian: Just nitpicking here, but copyright, trademark, and patents are all completely different things. ;)

Heh, didn't even realize I wrote 'trademark patent'. But, um, uh, it's new... yeah, it's a new thing you can do... WHAT'S THAT OVER THERE?!

*runs*

It's nice to see there are at least some third parties SCEA isn't willing to fuck over with regards to PSX pots. Nice, I'm looking forward to playing it. I'm still a bit "meh" over Silmeria, though.

Well, first, I don't start off by giving tri-Ace the benefit of the doubt, just because I've liked so few of their games. I didn't enjoy the Star Oceans or Radiata Stories very much. Second, while I recognize the technical artistry of the game's look, it just hasn't really fully clicked with me on a personal level.

I'll still be buying it and giving it a fair chance, I'm just not going to lie and say that it's anywhere near the top of my most anticipated RPGs list (which is a pretty full list).

You have really weird tastes.

Apparently, the port of VP1 to PSP was done by TOSE and has some load time and text filtering problems. Anyone wanna confirm? If the port of VP1 is as bad as the one for Generation of Chaos, DRINKY CROW AM CRY.

Not considering tri-Ace games to be the best RPGs ever = weird taste? Okay, if you say so.

I'm much more looking forward to Suikoden V, Final Fantasy XII, Front Mission V, Rogue Galaxy, Final Fantasy III, Contact, Twilight Princess, Crystal Chronicles 2/DS, Xeno DS, and Children of Mana. That doesn't strike me as all that odd.

(And if I got to pick, I'd take Suikoden I&II in the US over VP: Lenneth, but I'll take what I can get there.)

Damn, I really hope that's not the case. Load times in portable games are real killjoys -- this is why i was so dissatisfied with the BOF3 port and why I so loved the Eternia port.

looking forward to ANY Xeno* game, much less a homely port to the inferior DS hardware, does indeed count as "weird tastes" -- especially when you anticipate it moreso than a *NEW* VP game.

Loadtimes are fantastic, lack there of basically.(Then again I might be biasd after the load hell that is Y's 6 psp) Meanwhile the filtering thing is a lot worse than what you've mention. Like ToE, the sprites are given a blur filter to "clean" them up, but the end result is a big mixed bag. The sprites end up pretty offensive on the eyes when the cameras zoomed all the way in. They also tend to blend in with the BGs so its a bit of a blurry mess at times. Another thing to note is the slowdown during some of the dungeon crawling, like in the snowy Forest of Woe. Finally, there's the CG FMVs that many folks seem to hate, heres a list of what they replaced with these thus far:

Valkryie's suit up transformation
Jelanda's ghoul transformation
First visit to weeping lilly valley

I personally don't think they're all that bad and find it a nice treat with the direction they took with them.

edit: forgot to mention that the blur filter on the font makes it really irritating on the eyes :/

Well I'm not just saying because of this thread, maybe I should've said more unique then most.

There's also the fact that I consider VP to be an excellent game, and I always have reservations about the sequels to excellent games. It's very difficult to follow up excellence with a better product in the second game of a series (Suikoden II was one of the few games that accomplished this), so I'd rather keep my expectations low and be surprised than have them very high and end up disappointed.

Tri-ace made:

Star Ocean
Star Ocean 2nd Story
Valkyrie Profile
Star Ocean Blue Sphere
Star Ocean 3 Till the End of Time
Radiata Stories

Out of all these, Valkyrie Profile is that ONLY game I can say is "excellent". The others range from "mediocre" to "disappointing" to "good".

Now considering all this, and considering how poor a port Valkyrie Profile Lenneth is (while the actual quality is relative, I think it would be fair to compare a current-gen PSP port from a high profile company like Square Enix with a first-gen PSP port of ToE from another high profile company like Namco), it is not unfair to have doubts about Valkyrie Profile Silmeria. Tri-ace has done nothing to prove that they are capable of replicating the success they found in the VP formula, and Square Enix has failed to prove that they're so serious about the VP franchise that they would let no harm come to it.

Having said that I'm looking forward to Silmeria quite a bit, if for no other reason than because it looks fucking beautiful. I think the term here would be "cautiously optimistic". :D

You make a really good point. Tri-Ace gets a lot of praise from RPG nuts when in fact, the vast majority of their RPGs are just not that well made. VP is awesome, and I really enjoyed Star Ocean Second Story, but the rest I would have no problem never playing again.

Is there any word on key VP members working on Silmeria? That would at least ease my anxiety on the subject.

Yeah, I came to this realization as well. I think it's just that VP is sooooo incredible, and outclasses most everything else in the genre, that it's hard not to have a hard-on for the developer, regardless of their past work. For the record, I liked Radiata, and SO3 doesn't seem so bad, but neither come close to VP. I played SO2 far too long ago to remember anything about that one, heh.

I'm a development team information whore but I stopped tracking Tri-ace stuff after SO3 disappointed me so much. For the record, the director of SO3 also directed VP, so I have no idea what to think anymore. I hope it's just that SO is their "mainstream" series which they don't really care to polish and VP is their "masterpiece" series. Because otherwise, it would mean VP is just a fluke and that isn't a good sign for VP:S. :(

For years people have wished for a sequel to VP. Every time an internet rumor came up, or a fake boxart was posted, or a developer hinted, everyone would always say OMG I wish for nothing more than a sequel to VP that would be the best thing ever.

Now, not only is it coming, but we are getting hints about a US release.

And all of a sudden people are like, meh whatever, I'm not excited, I'm not getting my hopes up.

You know what... shut up.

These would be "PEOPLE A".

These are known as "PEOPLE B".

Now is it a fact that "PEOPLE A" and "PEOPLE B" are the same group? No? Well then people that like to generalize (PEOPLE C) can pretty much follow the following instruction.

You know what... shut up.

:D

I'd rank them like this personally.

Star Ocean: B
Star Ocean Second Story: B+
Valkyrie Profile: A+
Star Ocean Blue Sphere: C-
Star Ocean Till The End of Time: A-
Radiata Stories: B-

So yeah, I'm quite the tri-Ace whore =p.

As for the news, the Lenneth port will be good for folks that haven;t played it. And yay for Silmeria news!

No, not really. Second Story has so many more problems than Star Ocean 3 that it's ridiculous.

Edit: Dammit, edited before I posted >O

If you mean how it addresses the whole fun issue by being so much more boring then SS, then I agree with you.

The Second Story is still much more fun to play, though...

And how anybody would want another Xenosaga (probably the worst RPG series since Hydlide) over VP:Silmeria is totally beyond me. Complain about tri-Ace but their worst game (Star Ocean 3) is much better than anything Monolith has ever made. Drinky's right on the ball in this case.

Nowhere near as fun as SO3 for me.

And if you want bad, play Star Ocean: Blue Sphere. While I applaud the effort for trying a SO game on the GBC, it's just not very good.

From the looks of the screenshots i doubt Silmeria will be anything less than spectacular.

Tri-Ace's history details great graphics & intuitive battle systems, so all that's left is coming up w/ a decent plot (it's about Lenneth's sister, so there's a great start).

SO3 is a mess, a buggy mess at every level. Piece of crap, rushed, unpolished, untested... In every level, this game is hugely inferior to its predecessor except graphics, which, of course, cant save the game. The second biggest disappointment in this generation IMO.

Now that's worrying...

Awesome. I'm not too worried about getting a flawless port, I just wanted them to get the job done with nothing significantly broken (load times, slowdown, etc.). As I missed out on the game the first time around, the core content of the game is the most important, and that's simply impossible to screw up. I can't wait.

Did anyone read my post ? D:

Though what Shouta said is right but I think veterans would still enjoy it too. VP on the go! I'm almost done with the first chapter, god I love psp's sleep option.

Wait, I thought by the content of your post that you think the port is hampered by the blurring? Did I interpret incorrectly, do you find it to be only a minor annoyance? Sorry if so. Please clarify your thoughts on the game, I really want to know. Do you think the port is poor, average, good, great, fantastic, etc? :)

Port is definitely poor. But the main issue here is that Valkyrie Profile is AWESOME. So I guess for some people, not-as-good-VP on the go is better than no-VP-on-the-go at all. :D

SO:TSS is one of my favourite games of all time, and SO3 doesn't compare.

That filter problem sounds really shitty...too bad, I'm really anticipating VP:L never having played the first.

Perfect-VP-on-the-go > poor-VP-on-the-go > no-VP-on-the-go.

I would buy both if they came out on the US, and make sweet, sweet love to them, as they assuredly deserve... even if Lenneth has become a cheap, slightly-diseased whore of her former, younger self. :D

Tose handled Lenneth? What, are they porting every former-console-RPG-turned-handheld-RPG on the planet?

Yeah they are. I heard they farm all programming to China and they're fucking cheap.
