get some go again
Probably. A union would probably negotiate something like this into a three strikes type of offense, so he would have gotten written up, but not fired, and he'd know not to do it again.
the story says he hadn't even worked 90 days so he might of still been on probation. a lot of times something this small is usually enough to get you fired.

This portion of the article has me wondering:

Aaron Mullins, a Wal-Mart spokesman, told The Washington Post that Smith was fired for redeeming bottles that had been submitted to the customer service desk by other customers, making them store property. Had Smith found the bottles in the parking lot and brought them inside himself, he said, he wouldn’t have been violating store policy.

Do people give cans to customer service in states where there are deposits? If so, for what purpose? To help WalMarts bottom line? If it is some normal practice that I am unaware of, WalMart at least kinda has a point (though I agree terminating him was much too harsh)

Only the employees get counted as theft.

It's complete bullshit. They consider the stupidest things 'theft'. "Oh you took 3 minutes walking from the back to the front of the store after clocking in? YOU'RE STEALING SAM WALTONS TIME!!"(No, literally. I've had that thrown at me before.)

How can you steal the time of a dead man? Or was this before he died? He's probably rolling over in his grave.

Definitely going to donate to this man. Fuck Walmart. Poor guy's trying to be a better person and they're basically shoving him back into the dirt.

I worked a seasonal job in retail and helped a lady with some boxes out to her car, and she offered to top me. I declined, knowing it's probably against policy but she said "it's Christmas" and shoved it in my shirt pocket. A friend of mine who worked there too told me not to say anything because they'd likely fire me over it.

One time I helped a lady put a 55" DLP into their truck in the parking lot. We're not supposed to anymore due to insurance policies (this was 06 best buy), she wanted to give me $20 dollars but I didn't take it. Both things would have gotten me fired. For helping the lady beyond the store door, and also for taking money. Just goes to show what happens in such an overly litigious society full of regulations.

When I worked in a grocery store people would bring bottles or cans to the service desk that the machine wasn't accepting. So maybe these were bottles that had been redeemed already and he was trying to redeem them again. Either way it sounds like an honest mistake or a slap on the wrist, not a firing.

There's a cult of personality around sam walton. Like, in the break room and in random areas of the employee area there's fucking posters of his quotes with his face and hand raise up like he's the damn pope or something. Everywhere there's sam walton quotes.

I remember the manager who told me, I had to stop myself from laughing. 'You're stealing sam waltons time!'. It's very creepy.

...Luckily that manager isn't at my store anymore, and the other managers aren't batshit insane about praising sam walton.

Im confused. Did he take bottles that had already been redeemed? I mean, if thats the case, then yeah he was definitely in the wrong. If you read the statement it said he took them from the service desk.

If the bottles were just in a cart on the floor, then just tell him what he did was wrong, give the money back and move along. If he knowingly took bottles from the service desk, then thats a little more serious.

I believe they argued there was no proof he didn't steal the products the cans went to. In reality, the person who made the decision most likely didn't like the guy, or was power mad and wanted to exert his authority.
