Wall mounting an LCD... Damn this is difficult!

Now, I know that I need to have this screwed into a 'stud' in the wall due to the weight, but I can't find a damn stud in the wall no matter how hard I try. I knocked and knocked, will come across what sounds like one, start drilling... Nothing but sheet rock.

I have fucked up my bedroom wall beyond belief as a result.

Anyone have any success mounting one of these things?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Buy a stud finder. Seriously you'll save yourself a huge amount of frustration.

My dad has one... I didn't feel like going out to Largo to get it.

How much do they cost?

Is there a more low budget way of finding a stud?

I'm on my way to RadioShack. Maybe they have them there...

From a quick google search:

Time-tested low tech methods

Look for signs associated with stud location:
Studs are located along the edges of windows and doors. With 16" spacing, the center of the first stud is generally 14-1/2" from the corner of a room.

Electrical outlets are usually attached to the side of studs.

Nail heads or nail holes in the wall or molding may give clues to a stud's whereabouts.

Look for changes in the wall surface, such as seams, nails or screws in sheetrock. It's best to not go on nail/screw location alone -- a nail may be the leftover bad try of the guy before you who also had trouble finding the studs.

Tap across the wall with your knuckles. The area between studs sounds hollow, while the area above the stud sounds dull. Try this on several different walls to get a feel for the sound changes.

Low tech substitute for a magnetic stud finder: Use a magnetic compass or magnet on a string.

Home Depot and Loews have them as cheap as $10.

When you're putting up shelves or hanging large pictures or mirrors on a wall, it's important to drive the nails or screws into wall studs. The challenge is finding those studs. If you don't have an electronic stud finder, you can locate studs with nothing more than a table lamp.

Remove the shade, turn on the lamp and hold the bare bulb 10 to 12 inches away from the wall. Look for the silhouettes of nailheads or drywall tape as the side light skims the surface of the wall; you should find a stud directly behind the nailheads or tape. Then look for other studs spaced either 16 or 24 inches on center.

Thanks.

Anyone here use wall mounts for display devices? If so, how do you conceal the wiring?

I mounted our bedroom TV on the wall using a swinging arm mount. The holder itself has holes to run the cabling through the unit itself so the don't just hang free and as for those running down the way we just put up some of those plastic cable holding molding things... yes I have no idea what they are actually called.

is sheet rock like plasterboard? Gypsum sandwiched by paper? Used to coat the walls before being plastered?

If so, then for cables, you just pop a hole in the wall which will be masked by the screen, then another down by the floor. Dangle the cables down and away you go. You can pop a panel on the bottom one if you want it to look nice.

How old the building is counts as a factor. Really old construction rarely follows the 16"-24" inch regularly. Studs could be all over the fucking walls willy-nilly (where's teresias when you need him?).

Grab a studfinder. $20 at most HomeDepot stores. Way cheaper and quicker than spackling, smoothing, and repainting drilled holes.

and if its a small LCD, you can just mount directly to the plasterboard using special plasterboard fixings. Try your local home depot? (I'd say B&Q, but I'm guessing you are in the US)

Great advice. Will try that.

The building is old, and I realized that the studs are not near one another for that reason. Which sucks because the damn stud pretty much dictates my placement options.

The other wall options are all brick... :(

Man, if you're so damn rich, why aren't you getting us Redskins/Ravens tickets?

Hmm who right now is going to that game? That's actually one of the few games I haven't even bothered to check ticket prices for. I'm a bit limited this year in terms of home games we can go to due to the upcoming little one. But that's an October game which is still a month before the baby is due... It's an away game for us(Ravens), and I'm really leaning towards catching a game at M&T... however how is the Redskins stadium and who here is going? IF a few folks are maybe I'll check out prices for this game.

I'm definitely going, but I am trying to get tickets for Jason and my friend. FedEx Field is pretty awesome (they've really done some great renovations of shitty design bugs when Jack Kent Cooke officially opened its gates), but it's huge as it has the largest capacity of any stadium in the league. Tickets can be pretty expensive, as the stadium is always sold out. The waiting list to get season tickets can take years for a call back. Seriously.

And since this is a BATTLE OF THE BELTWAY bout, it'll be harder to get tickets. Although, if it's any indication, the team that loses will win the Super Bowl. The last time they played, Washington got Baltimore pretty good, but Baltimore had the last laugh in the Super Bowl.

I'll be there early tailgating, as well, so if you can get there, I don't mind meeting up earlier.

I went to see the Ravens play Atlanta in the pre-season opener. Great stadium. Very blue collar town.

Yeah, M&T Bank Stadium is class. And I like that it's right next to Camden Yards. Now go score us some damn tickets, DCB!

I'm going! Redskins season tickets, baby :)

Of course, my seats are pretty much as high up in the stadium as you can get... but at least I'll be there! FedExField is a great stadium, but watch out what tickets you get. There are some tickets (face value $69) that have completely obstructed views -- you'll be watching the game on a flat panel monitor as most of the field is blocked by a huge pillar. I think these seats are all in the "300" sections. Personally I think you can't go wrong with 400 section seats. Here's a tool you can use to check, although it won't tell you if your particular seats have obstructed views or not.
