Wanting a Feudal Japan WRPG

Leave eastern settings to eastern developers.
It's better for everyone.

Yes.
They don't get it.

but if you leave eastern rpgs in the hands of eastern developers you get games that look like this:

Would shit myself if anyone made a Vagabond rpg or something like it if not just in tone.

That manga is such an incredible read. I would recommend it to anyone.

Actually, that manga is what sparked the entire idea of this game idea. Which is why I had to mention it. I read that manga YEARS ago, from the hundreds of manga Ive read, its STILL my favorite, hands down.

If they made this into a anime, I'd watch the living shit out of it.

Kenzan is PS3 only and Ishin is on PS3 and PS4 and both are text heavy in Japanese(also side note they are Eastern made obviously)

Hmmm, so Im guessing this is a eastern only release then???

I'm with you OP.
This is exactly the game that I would want to see from a Western developer.
Unfortunately I don't think it's ever gonna happen.

What about Global studios with people from all around? Yeah, western open world design with western resources will be better, but writers and consultants should be Japanese if it makes a better game.

What are the guys who did Sleeping dogs doing? maybe they can dabble into the RPG market.
Doing a sequel to that game. And yeah they could probably do one. They would be like 2nd or 3rd on my list. Rockstar would be 1st especially on a AAA scale. As good as anyone at world building.

Bully and Red Dead are both incredible at this.

It's my favorite too with Full Metal Alchemist right behind it. Musashi's growth and struggle is amazing to see.

The Way of the Samurai games are very unlike WRPGs. They are pretty good though.

The Way of the Samurai games tend to be much shorter than any RPG I have played, instead emphasizing playing through the game multiple times to see a variety of dramatically different story routes. It really is hard to compare them to any other game I have played, but I think they are worth playing.

Anyways, I am really wary of the idea of a western developed RPG taking place in feudal Japan. Most RPG makers in the west are still heavily mired in D&Disms, and the world of western tabletop RPGs has long been infected by a strong strain of orientalism; in particular, there is a strong tendency to exaggerate a handful of cultural stereotypes while not accurately reflecting an actual historical culture.

I don't want to say that no one could do a good job or condemn anyone, but I would be skeptical of such a game. Most RPG developers are still really bad at Medieval European inspired settings.

I have that same worry too. If i was developing a game like this, Id be VERY keen on accuracy of the culture and history, none of that BS stereotypical stuff. Getting all facts straight from the source. But not things like demons and stuff, as that shit isnt real. But you get what Im saying. We on the same page.

If that era/aesthetic could somehow get a Witcher-like treatment, I'd be all over that shit for sure.

Oh wow, I didn't even think of the witcher.

But man, I got a beef with that game's controls on consoles. Man I HATE em. That game feels like all the mouse and key bindings were mapped to a controller, and thats it. You can SOOO tell its a PC game. It was a PC only title at one point in time. Feels great on the PC though. Just sucks ass on consoles.

The best you will probably get at some point is Ubisoft setting Ass Creed in Japan. Outside of that it probably won't happen ( though I would dig it)

I always thought Princess Monoke the movie setting was absolutely fascinating and makes a perfect video game setting. However, Studio Ghibli recently only make family friendly stuff like like Ni No Kuni. Only if Studio Ghibli would make a more serious tone game that takes place in Muromachi Period Japan like in the movie, as that movie have blood and gore. In that setting you got your Samurais, the Shogun, the Emperor, your demons, your Ninjas, your Shinto gods, you got Nanban foreigners, all short of factions all ready to go at it. Even the movie start off almost like a video game setting, a hero setting off on a quest to lift his curse. Not to mention the soundtrack is absolutely gorgeous.

If Studio Ghibli makes a game remotely anything like that, I will buy instantly.

Sadly, it is only a pipe dream.

They should do a dragon's dogma in the east. That will be amazing.

They need to do something about the fast traveling and general clunkiness in dragon's dogma though.

What ever happened to Tenchu? Used to love those games.

They made that stinker for the 360, Tenchu Z.
Shinobido which was released towards the end of the PS2's cycle would be somewhat like a spiritual successor to the open world ninja game format. Not sure of Shinobido 2 was any good though. I really did enjoy the 1st game a lot.

Total War: Shogun was made by a western developer.
Dark Souls was made by an eastern developer.
Sleeping Dogs? Western.
Resonance of Fate? Eastern.

What are you getting at.

R-research is impossible!

But what does Resonance of Fate have to do with anything Western? And DS takes place in a European inspired fantasy realm, so... eh.

I'd love for the developers of Kingdom Come: Deliverance(open-world rpg with realistic fighting, choices, no magic etc) to take this as next project.
Or maybe directly as Kingdom Come 2.
Maaaan that would be awesome!

Ahah.
You have a point :D
(Can't stand the jap emo kids anymore)

Total War: Shogun was made by a western developer.
Dark Souls was made by an eastern developer.
Sleeping Dogs? Western.
Resonance of Fate? Eastern.

What are you getting at.
Total War: Not an RPG.
Dark Souls: Only the art style is western inspired.

Didn't play the other two, so I don't know about them.

A Lone Wolf and Cub RPG would be fantastic set in an open-world, dynamic weather/season Japan.

Receive assassination missions by visiting temples, evade or defeat ambushes by the Yagyu Shadow Clan, earn gold to upgrade your 'cart' and your weapons, sleep with hot assassin geishas, protect and train Daigoro (your son), ally yourself with various Clans and undertake their assignment to undermine the corrupt Shogunate ... man, the possibilities.

Yes.

American developers usually don't get Western fantasy right either. The settings are mostly inspired by European history, but the scenery, architecture and designs almost always come across as Disneyland-ish. Surprisingly, the Souls games are significantly better than anything Bethesda or Bioware ever did in that regard.

That's what I'm saying man. Folks are sitting on a damn gold mine and don't even know it.

I hope some developer, indie or mainstream sees this shit and be like, "hmm, maybe we'll take a swing at it." Know what I'm saying???

Where's the African RPGs at?

Where's the Aztec RPGs?

So far all we have after all these years is fantasy Europe and fantasy Europe with half Japanese people in it and sometimes an Asian village thrown in.

Not to mention indian

A good WRPG taking place during the mughal empire or mongol empire would be worth dying for.

Yes.

That's a horrible attitude to have.

Great games like sleeping dogs, Jade empire, total war shogun, jeanne d'arc, dark souls, dragon's dogma etc wouldn't exist if everyone thought like that.

Not exactly Feudal Japan, but isn't Jade Empire the next best thing?

Hardly, the story is a borderline racist pastiche and the game is so mechancially tedious and unsound that you can break it with the focus power alone never mind some of the shockingly unbalanced special abilities

although I've never played that game before, this is the first I've heard someone say something negative about it.

Amen. The world is so varied and fascinating, it really is a waste to have every game focus on western fantasy archetypes.
