Wow, I found this online (I am not sure if it is still copyrighted, so I wont say where) and I have to say that it is amazing.

Probably the most well produced radio drama I have ever listened too. It is still scary to this day.

Anyone remember the CBS show that was inspired by war of the worlds that aired about 10 years ago. Where the meteors were aliens and then the US tried to use nukes to no avail?

What was that called?

I don't believe it's copyrighted anymore. The book is public domain now.

Yeah, AFAIK all those radio shows from the 30's are public domain. The SciFi channel once was hosting the WOTW broadcast.

The reason why people were able to do a low budget WOTW movie that's going direct to DVD this month while the Spielberg one comes out is because the book and story is in the public domain.

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
i believe there is a 70 year copyright limit on recorded works - then it's public domain.

Not sure about the time scale on books , but given WotW was written in the 1890's, you've got to think that text copyright doesn't stretch for 115 years or so....

Martian invasion, biochemical warfare, lazers, robotic attack tripods ... in 1890-something... WTFOMGDIYBBQPTOWWFR2D2HIVCIAFBI!?!?

wait the book is public domain? So Speilberg and Dreamworks didn't have to pay a dime for the rights or anything? Will that eventually happen to Lord of the Rings?

"wait the book is public domain? So Speilberg and Dreamworks didn't have to pay a dime for the rights or anything? "

that is correct.

didn't people notice there are FOUR versions of the same story coming out - all called War of the Worlds or mild variants : H.G. Welles' War of the Worlds, Spielbergs War of the Worlds, Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds - based on the Musical (which is based on the book), Asylum's War of the Worlds ...?

The Pendragon WotW is, to put it mildly, comedy gold.

well then get ready for "Ninja Scooter presents The Bible" starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Moses and Emilio Estevez as his life partner Jesus. in theatres Summer 2007.

DMczaf Presents The Bible will top it

With hours and hours of Magic Johnson reading the Bible, with no editing! Uncensored comedy!

Even if it's in the public domain you could probably obtain a patent on making movies based on the original work. :p
