Over the Christmas holidays I lugged my GameCube over to a friend's house to play the console version of Wario Ware. Her older brother, who's my age, witnessed us playing the multiplayer patience game and announced his opinion on how childish and stupid the game was.
Well, I was over there again tonight for a showing of The Incredible and I took my DS. I decided to showcase Wario Ware Touched! to see his reaction to the new title. I started with the harmonica which garnered a bunch of laughs and a demand to hold the system to try it out. That led to him trying out several of the micro-games and eventually led to him playing different levels of the main game. He was completely entertained and later asked if this was the new version of that crappy GameCube game.
My question is... Is it the fact that titles such as Wario Ware are more acceptable on handheld systems or is the fact that the DS is unique, interesting, and appeals more to the casual gaming consumer that he enjoyed what he played tonight?
Personally I'm leaning toward the latter due to the fact that most people I've shown (either by force or response to questioning) seem really interested in the features of the DS. It seems more interesting to not only the Halo crows (her brother), but the out-of-touch-the-last-thing-i-played-was-pong older gamers (her parents).
If what I believe to be true is in fact true, I see a system such as the Revolution broadening the appeal of home console gaming. Consumers are suckers for anything that can draw a "wow... that's really neat".
And amir0x... I know... anecdotal. But if it's true in a couple cases under one house, I'm sure it's true all over.
