Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
Nah, this will be a short term thing until it's safe to walk around America.

Right now there are 38 million HBO Max subscribers in America. That's about 570 million a month they are making? If Covid19 wasn't around, Warner could plop Wonder Women 84 in cinemas and easily make another 400-500 million in America. HBO Max would need another 20 million subscribers to cover that extra revenue. But here is the thing, even if Warner don't release their theatrical films on HBO Max, they would still gather those extra subscribers over time.

And let's say millions of people subbed to HBO Max for a month just to watch a theatrical film, Warner would still make less money in this manner than if they released theatrically.

On the radio news they estimated that it would take a year or more in Australia to have everyone vaccinated for Covid19, so sometime in 2022 everyone will be vaccinated. I'd imagine it would take even longer to have everyone vaccinated in America. Warner are just making smart business decisions for the now.
I think the damage is done. With the new administration, things will only get stricter.

But like I said even without this whole Covid fiasco, it was inevitable. The more leaps in home thl this.eater and information/internet technology and the more people are connected, the less people will want to visit a theater and just enjoy it in the comfort of their own home.

If anything, this pandemic will condition people more to it but again it was inevitable in a decade or two.

It's possible you'll still have theaters for certain nostalgic reasons or events. Maybe new theater technology, like those scarce 4D theaters which function like rides while watching a movie, will entice people with big blockbusters like Star Wars, but overall I believe it's a dying pastime especially after all this.

I want both options. I would love to use these streaming services, because I just enjoy my piece and quiet on my 65 LG C9 rather than the cinema where there is a limited selection of food and drinks thats over priced.

That said I still want to go to cinema with friends but I wish niche movies like Possessor, and The Lighthouse would have come out at the same time on streaming as cinema, as cannot see Possessor due to UK cinemas being closed. So had to wait for streaming

You guys can keep celebrating, but this is bad news for Cinemas. Most consumers will probably watch this on HBO Max over going to the Cinema. 2021 was supposed to kick start the movie going experience but it may end up killing cinemas if this continues beyond 2021. Want to live in a world where Cinemas don't exist?

Movie theaters are basically dead. Even the ones that are open, no one wants to go to. The fearmongering worked. People don't want to go anywhere anymore.

I just don't see how you get $1B+ in ticket sales any time in the next 3+ years.
Easy. Make cinemas a more expensive and more exclusive night out for enthusiasts, rather than a quick flick and putting up with kids, idiots on phones and loud drunk slappers.

No thanks, I go to the cinemas at least 12+ times a year. Increasing price will limit my visits.

*EDIT*
Make that almost once a week.

*EDIT 2*
When you go to the cinemas as much as I do, the issues you mention above don't happen very frequently. But for the people who only go to the movies twice a year and experience this with every visit, there is already a more expensive "inclusive" cinema in Australia. It's called Gold class where you have recliner chairs and can order drinks and food.

I totally forgot Matrix 4 was even a thing, and now I'm excited again. Man, I hope it's good. It's been a while since the last one but I have faith. It's pretty insane to think people will be able to watch a new Matrix at home as soon as it comes out. I really think I'd want to watch that in a Cinema, even if it is overpriced.

They took away arcades as home video game consoles became prevalent.
They took away midnight launches for games as digital distribution became a thing with preload games.
They took away movie rental stores as streaming became the standard.
Now movie theatres will die as streaming content will be the norm.
Streaming killed cable.

GamePass, subs for HBO, Netflix, Disney Plus, etc will rule. People will just afford the hardware, just about the only thing they own and everything gets licensed. Just the way of DRM.
Once the service collapses so as the content.

I hate cinemas more then the next guy, but this isn't good news if you are going to kill off an entire industry. Add in all the shit around the cinema that is being propped up. The mulitplexes usually have restos or other stores around them that catch people after or before the movie.

Like I said on the other page feels like a big set up to basically sell Hollywood to China for pennies. After 2 years of shitty returns on steaming services and theaters closing left and right all these studios and cinema companies will be insolvent and picked up for nothing. China will end up owning all of showbusiness within half a decade.

And since China now has the biggest movie market with cinemas they will make bank and movies will start being geared towards the Chinese market. Hollywood people will move to China at a drop of a hat they have no souls. This could very well be the death of Hollywood.

Excellent news on all fronts.

The cinema chains have been serving up sub standard, over priced experiences for years.

Fuck ‘em.

I really don’t miss the theaters tbh. My TV is ten years old and my sound system is regular 5.1 but it’s still a better experience at home IMO. I’m about to start upgrading too so even less reason to spend stupid money to go watch something in a big theater.

Now I just need to convince my wife to stay up past 9PM

I see they have 3 options.

1) make it so cheap that every Tom dick and Harry will go to the cinema even more than they do now, where they prefer going to the cinema over sitting at home.

2) go bankrupt

3) make it such an exclusive night that people would go with friends.

It's a shitty choice but with covid, I would imagine less people want to sit in a room with other people.

Personally though I couldn't give a fuck. I hope they all shut down. Saves me turning down birds who think a trip to the cinema is a valid date. Skanks

As I’ve said before you’d probably have a different tune if you’d experienced something like Alamo Draft House. I agree AMC is pure shit with food worse than most Major League Sports stadiums, filthy seats and screaming kids but you haven’t lived till you’ve had a nice meal, good frosty adult beverage, on a leather cinema recliner with actual adults watching a film with pristine sound and picture.

I’m going to be real fucking sad to lose that but who knows maybe by Occulus Quest 4 it will feel like the same thing.

I have to say this.

... bringing all their movies down to this level is going to elevate what the Snyder Cut is and what its release means for the DCEU.

I predicted theaters would be obsolete in about 10 years before even Covid.

It's pretty much going the way of the video game arcade. Covid just sped it up. This was inevitable.

I think only the luxury theaters that have full food menus, bars, busboy service will continue to exist, similar to how the only arcades that really exist still are the Dave and Busters types. The theaters that provide a full experience/night out on their own will still have a place in the market, the ones that are just barebones screens and popcorn will no longer serve any purpose

Oh, I don't think the small, independent cinemas or chains like Draft House will actually suffer long term. They'll become (if they're not already) like vinyl record shops - places enthusiasts go to enjoy an art form in a medium that may be past it's sell by date, buy still retains a lot of popularity among a smaller community. But let's face it, the major cinema chains did them more harm than anything else over the years anyway.

I can't speak for AMC as I've not visited a US movie theatre for about five years, but here in the UK the cinema experience is universally dog shit, in every chain. Same goes for Australia where I've also been to the cinema a lot. None of them deserve an ounce of sympathy for what's coming their way thanks to covid.

It's likely to kill the multiplexes and the oversaturation of them at prime locations. I also think it will roll them back to smaller theatres for an enthusiast audience and that could be a good thing for fans of theatrical viewings of movies. Killing off 3D would be a bonus as well.

You can actually do that at AMC ... Well, some of them. The one in Phipps Plaza in Atlanta basically has that in some of its theaters (the individual rooms, not the whole building). Leather reclining seats, big pristine screens, great sound (as a guy with a Cochlear Implant, that's saying something)...

Plus you can order your food and have it brought to you as a member of their services.

The One I went to also has a full service bar... And you can take your drinks with you to watch the movie!

Rest in Popcorn time, movie theaters

If you know what I mean. Especially outside of America.

They will really going to sacrifice international box office with this. So I suppose that HBO payed quite a sum.

I'll miss the Theaters and I used to go 2-3 times a month but... Top gun ain't from Warner, so at least one movie will make wear the hazmat suit and try my luck.

Yeah some locations but the food it mostly bad reheated crap not chef cooked like Alamo and the others I mentioned.

i really do hope cinemas are killed off. small ones can stick around for die hard enthusiasts but large ones can fuck right off. been hoping this would happen for years long before COVID. i much prefer to stream movies at home. don't need to pay ridiculous prices for parking, get ripped off for food/drink, worry about missing stuff if i need to go to the bathroom, and be charged if i want to watch it again.

Who was forcing you to go to the theater and not wait for blu ray and digital? If you don't like something personally they should all die and "fuck right off" even though millions of other people do prefer it? Cmon man.

Megaton. Fuck yes. I get it free with att cell plan. But this is massive. No extra cost either. Fuck you Disney. And Netflix too busy trying to stay woke cancelling good shows
The ATT plan that comes with HBO Max “for free” costs more. You are paying for it already. It’s a bundle that’s not marketed as a bundle.

This was a misguided move disguised as pro consumer but really just the most corporate, cold, vampiric, apathetic, money hungry dudes with glasses in suits and ties at AT&T hellbent on boosting their little rinky dink streaming service.

You sound mad at something that is optional.

Frankly, I could go to the movies and not pay for parking since I get there by bus. I go to the bathroom before the movie starts and I don't drink a ton before going. I also eat AFTER the movie as it's cheaper to do that than AT the theater. Sounds like you're mad about your own choices and not necessarily the theater's.

True. SMG is legit better in the food service and alcohol dept.

Yeah I hope they can make another go of it after bankruptcy. The strategy I loved about SMG was that they would also take over old family owned theaters in the middle of communities and renovate them. They did a fantastic job with a mom and pop theater in Monrovia before I moved up to hell/SF Bay Area.
