Warning: PS2 holiday demo disk may erase your memory card

I just recieved a call from Sony and they are going to swap out my system with a refubished 39001 model that has a built in IR port. This solves my main issue of having my DVD remote drivers erased.

I am really impressed with SCEA's response to this (once past the initial consumer services guy who answered the 800-345-SONY call). Thanks Sony!

You have really low expectations. The least Sony could do is give you a new PS2, not a refurbished one.

I got my system at launch... I cannot complain at all as long as I can use my DVD remote again.

Bully for you for being so forgiving. As I see it, though, you lost your save files because Sony QA overlooked a major glitch. Surely that's a basis for complaining. Since Sony customer service was willing to give you a way to use your DVD remote again, it could have done slightly more than the bare minimum.

Yeah, I only own 4 PS2 games, and my progress on them could be easily replicated with maybe 3-4 hours play, but I'd still be pretty pissed off if a demo disc, of all things, wiped my memory card. You'd think that the stuff that Sony is putting out there to sell games would really be put under a little more scrutiny than that.

I am not happy about what happened, but I think that given what has already happened, SCEA did what it could to resolve my situation.

From some guy on the gamespot forum where I also posted a warning:
Man it was a little too late for me....I got the demo in the mail and decided to try VJ 2 since I never played the first one.....so my memory card was erased with all 16 of my ps2 games data gone including 60% of jak 3 and 21 hours on GTA SA....it was a horrible day....and me not have any back-ups made it ten times worse...

It would be nice if some major gaming news organizations (no offense meant to gamesarefun.com) pick this up before it gets worse.

Heh, no offense taken. Hopefully Gamestop/IGN/1up will post the news soon.

I'm trying to spread the word about this on all the forums I frequent; I recommend you all do the same.

Man this sucks. No more GTA:SA stuff (it's a rpg), gotta level my lungs and spray gang symbols all over again... and the pimping ; ; (curls up in a ball and boo hoo).

A fellow on the GamerDad boards that writes for us also had it happen to him. It's definitely for real. He saw my news post and warning just a little too late.

Just got an email from Sony about this.
Dear PlayStation(R) Underground Member,

You are scheduled to receive the Holiday 2004 Demo Disc
including the playable Viewtiful Joe 2 - please take note.
It has just been brought to our attention that there is a
glitch in this demo which will erase all of your saved files
from your Memory Card(s). If you have not yet played the
Viewtiful Joe 2 demo, please remove your Memory Card(s)
from your PlayStation(R) 2 computer entertainment system
before you load the Holiday 2004 Demo Disc.

Sony Computer Entertainment America would like to express
our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience this may have
caused you.

It sucks the bug is in there... but at least they got the email out... hey wait I'm a PU member and I haven't gotten that email...

It was a mass mailing so some spam blockers will stop it before it reaches your inbox. They also could just be sending it out in waves.

Yeah, it got put in the Junk Mail folder in my Hotmail account. Hopefully people won't delete it. :-/

Just got the email too. Good thing I don't have the demo yet...I would be so pissed if that happened to me

Hmm I just got this Holiday 2004 demo disk, but it doesn't have VJ2 on it. Only Killzone, MGS3, Area-51, Silent Hill 4, POP2, Star Wars Battlefront, Ace Combat 5, R&C 3, Jak 3 and ATV Offroad Fury 3.

Did they take the VJ2 demo off instead of fixing it? :(

Sounds like a different demo disc. Is yours the one from the PS2 magazine?
