Was given a partially working xbox. Worth it to resuscitate?

So I was given a battered old xbox by a friend after he got a new one to replace it. Apparently it would play fine for a few minutes and then eventually give up some disk read errors. He kept the controller that came with it so I just have the unit, the av cable and the power cord. So the question is, would it be worth it to try and get it in working order? Never had an xbox before so I would need to get a controller (geez, game companys really give you the hot poker on these. $30 for a new Type-S? Ugh.) and from the looks of things a new DVD drive. I've seen them on ebay for like $50. So that's already $80 and no game.

So what do you think? Is it worth anything in it's current state? I wouldn't mind selling it for a pittance as it would be seed money for a X360 pre-order.

My goodness what a nice friend you have. I wish I had a friends like that...any way how much would you sell it for ?

Ha! I've thought of that but whenever I wander over to xbox-scene my eyes start to glaze over and I lose track of what everyone is talking about.

As for how much I'd sell it for, I dunno. It seems to have more potential worth (ie someone serious about modding it) than actual worth. Do any of the brick-and-mortars take faulty consoles sans controllers for credit?

Yeah I'd use it for all of the Xbox's 'unlockable' features. Otherwise I don't think you'll get anything at a gameshop for a pretty much faulty one unless it can run long enough for you to trick them...

Just buy a new DVD-rom for it, you can find a normal Xbox drive for around $50 on ebay, or get a modded PC phillips drive from Divneo for $129 that reads any disk including CD'rs.

Thanks for the replies. Hmmmm. Perhaps I'll just store it away for awhile and see what the mod scene cooks up for the 360. If MS has everything locked down too tight I'll consider modding it. Of course knowing my luck, by the time I come to that decision there probably won't be any spare parts to be had!
