Was reading recently about the culture of Japanese fruits

Specifically the melon. I knew Japan was known for their melon, but I had no idea how expensive they are and the whole culture behind it. How each one of them is individually cared for and grown like a human being. And how they are auctioned off every year for tens of thousands of dollars.

The Yubari King looks so fucking delicious. I'd never pay the amount of money it costs to try any of these, even the $150 ones, but they look amazingly delicious. Has anyone here who has ever been to Japan ever tried the Hokkaido Melon or anything like that?

I saw a punnet of grapes going for over $20 in Tokyo once. Fruit seems ridiculously overpriced over there.

It is, it’s almost insane behavior. Some will pay like $200 for a single grape iirc from a video I saw, maybe an article? I do t care what type of fruit of how good it tastes, that’s foolish if I were to do it. Not judging those in Japan who purchase it, but I would feel like a moron lol

Japanese scamming westerners like they did with sushi. :messenger_smirking: Not dissing them though, good for their economy and global recognition.

You guys fall for this shit like crazy. "Ooh there's an art to growing these melons and that's why they're so expensive. Buy them now for an experience like no other"

first of all those super expensive fruits are mostly either for super high end establishment or for gifting to others, often people who's in a position you're trying to be on a good term with (like the manager who has the power to promote you). this is more about their culture of giving face/getting a good impression. as far as I know they don't really try to go out of their way to try to sell them to foreigners. they just sell them to anyone who's interested in them.

secondly, some of these are also basically due to their whole mentality of pursuing perfection. I was out in the countryside of Japan once and saw a box of 2 mangos selling for roughly $50 USD. I later learned that these kinds of mangos are grown to have the maximum amount of sweetness possible. I kinda wish I did get some just to try it out. is it worth it just to pay that much just to have a mango that's super sweet and just the right texture? maybe not to a lot of people, but to some it is.

they still have normally priced fruits in supermarkets and stuff. the higher end ones are often sell in gift fruit specialty stores and comes in a gift box all packaged up.

edit: found a video on this. dude's slightly cringy sometimes but it's worth a watch since they also visit the farm itself.

I am living in Tokyo. Sushi is more expensive in Japan than in North America.

Also I saw one of these melons for sale today for 10$ US. Still too much, but that is how fruit in Japan is.
