Watching the 1990's Turtles film - put it back at the Cinema

The original TMNT movie is literally the most excited I’ve ever been in my life for any movie or tv show. I remember my dad took off work early so he could take me to an afternoon showing in the middle of the week. We didn’t live near a theater so it was about a 45 minute drive. Going to see a movie back then was basically a once or twice a year event reserved for things like birthday parties. I’m pretty sure we were the only people in the theater and he slept the entire time. It was fucking magic to 10 year old me watching that movie.

I can't disagree more. It's a fucking great film from woe to go
Yeah yeah, especially that first scene where the kids steal some dude's wallet, then pass it along between a ton of different people, until giving it to their big mean boss.

It's the dumbest criminal enterprise ever deviced. Now I get that this is a movie for kids, only it kinda isn't. It's super dark for a kids movie, and you had to be 15 years to watch in theatres here.

This shit should stay in our collective memories and never be let out :messenger_tears_of_joy:

You would go watch again at the cinema right?

Turtles 2 should live in our memories because it is terrible, but Turtles 1 is hall of fame

Yeah it’s definitely a good movie.

Strange trivia no one asked for :
In The sequel .. none of the turtles besides Donatello fight with their weapons as some parents were outraged by the violence in first movie.

I'd go to a local theater for this, in a heartbeat. This movie is better than it has any right to be and almost makes me feel "okay" about the fact that we've been served such crappy TMNT films ever since. It got so much right, and the indie, low-budget, grainy look of the film is even reminiscent of the indie comics it was based on.

It's just so great. It maintains the sense of adventure that you only get from those 80's/90's era Spielbergian films and pairs it with a dark edge, dimly-lit streets, and ninja.
I can't name a comicbook movie with more heart than this one. The friendships and relationships are beautiful. They have chemistry.

It could have been even better if they let the director do his thing, but they took the cut away from him in post, to replace the music with goofier stuff and just tone it down a bit. Either way, we are lucky to have it. Maybe someday they will let him release a director's cut.

So, yeah, I'd go see it.

Sam Rockwell says check out the "East Warehouse over Lairdman Island" at the end

We all know it's Eastman and Laird who did the comics

I loved TMNT as a kid who grew up on dark and gritty 80s kids movies. It's pretty much the last of it's kind though, shown by the hugely disappointing and cartoony Secret of the Ooze.

It's still good, the acting from the turtles is believable. They all have their personalities, but it isn't exaggerated. I feel the film could stand on it's own without the license, it felt like they tried to make a decent movie first and fit the turtles into it.

I'm watching the second now and it's way better than I remembered.

I just wish Judith Haug was back as April :(

The practical effect suits are still impressive. I have a distant memory that the look of the Turtles them changed at some point. Not sure if it was between 1 and 2 or 2 and 3.

I should rewatch this. A Turtles fan in the 80s - who wasn't? - but more for the original B/W indie comics, I do recall this did justice to those original books than I would have expected. I don't recall the film leaving a huge imprint, but it seemed fine.

Nowadays, when there is a film like this where they had to handle a lot of crazy technical things practically instead of relying on CGI however, it is much more interesting to me; I am definitely interested to see how it holds up in that regard. What we generally see now is usually quite well-done, but it really does lack that extra layer of handmade, "oh they actually did this shit for real" sheen that was commonplace on any film with a decent budget in the 70s, (peaked at) 80s and early 90s. Something has been lost!

I think the first film is legit great. Still, one of the best comic book movies ever made. The final fight is great. A few lame jokes but when it kicks off you can feel it. You can feel the emotion.

Edit: I think this was put back in the cinema? At least here in the southeast, I remember one movie theater chain advertising it as part of some anniversary. Could be wrong but it rings a bell.

A bit off topic, but when theaters do these classic film showings, is it ALWAYS a legit print or are they just slipping in a blu-ray or whatever? The Alamo Drafthouse near me is always showing cult stuff and I'd assume a place like that would have a print but these days you never know, maybe they are all digital projectors now?

My supreme "winning the lottery" moment is opening my own theater just to show old shit the way it was meant to be seen.

Other than the first reply...

Yeah, the film totally holds up. Its great.

As a kid, I always liked Leo...but as an adult I realize I'm closer to Raphael than any of them. He struggles with the same things I do.

I just watched this the other day as well. Surprisingly not nearly as bad as I was expecting. Cheesy, sure, but it was 1990 TMNT.

Haha, yeah the rating has changed somewhat since then.

Times were different. A couple of swords and oh hey, this is for big kids.

Meanwhile that silver fang anime was drenched in blood and was age 7 or up or something. Cartoons are for kids y'know.

It’s so unique, interesting and wellmade. From the vibe, the shots, the amazing turtle suits, the sets, etc. And it even gets kind of deep at one point, becoming more than a kids live action film or a popcorn flick. And Kasey Motherfuckin Jones. I love it!

I still have my original DVD!

What was censored? I remember seeing her breasts, id that what was cut?
What she does with the shower head.

And you should feel bad about your TMNT opinion and be sent to reeducation camp

I have the censored version?! 😳

I never knew. I'll be damned.

And no. I'm not ashamed. I bought a 3 movie blu ray box for far too much money to get that one film because it was a childhood treasure.

I wishI hadn't. That's all. It's campy and fun at times. But it's not a good movie

Dem feels. Still one of the best comic book movies of all time.

They need to do a proper sequel(s) to the first movie.

And … hgggh
