Denis Villeneuve to direct the next James Bond film

Dune Part 2 was a big step down from Part 1, mainly because it diverged much more widely from the book in order to shove more Zendaya in everyone's faces and everyone is fucking sick of her

Hopefully Villeneuve is better with Bond than he was with Paul Atreides

Zendaya would make a great Bond girl.

Honestly, this seems like a big move from Amazon to show that they are serious about making a billion-dollar Bond film. Villeneuve has the talent and the prestige for a big Bond film like this.
All hinges on who they pick for the lead. If the face don't fit then it won't matter who's directing. I don't trust Amazon, they fucked up everything they've touched so far.

Hopefully Villeneunve gets complete creative freedom, including last say on the cast.

Sounds good to me. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with it.

I've thought before that Amazon should try letting various high profile and well regarded directors make one then move onto someone else. I'm sure plenty of directors out there have an idea for what their Bond film would be. Let each do their own thing. If someone wants to set theirs in the 60s then go for it, if the next person wants it to be modern and gritty then they can. Don't worry about an interconnected timeline.

Good director and most likely a new take, I am cautiously optimistic.

So far he hasn't really kowtowed much to corporate meddling in his films so hopefully this remains the same and he can put out the top quality movies he has a track record for so far.

First one too. Problem is Dune is unfilmable, Villeneuve's attempt is a mockery of what the source material is. Even the Lynch version is better considering all its flaws (spacediver version is good enough).

I like Villeneuve, Sicario and Blade Runner are great. Bond can be interesting, we'll see.
Exactly. The opening part of the story is doable as a sci-fi film to some extent, but it becomes more and more of an allegory and trying to be realistic is impossible.

At some point in the second movie, you have like 6-7 people riding a worm. How the hell did they do that? did the worm turn around in a circle and they jumped on one at a time like a buss? did they all jump at the same time at the count of three? what am I watching?

I want him to do dune films for the rest of his life.
That is exactly why he is an artist and you are an advanced basic bitch :messenger_grinning_sweat:

It is the best thing that could happen to bond movies.
It will be really interesting to see how he will adapt his very personal art direction to the james bond imagery.

I think he is a good choice to direct. We need a good Bond, and some great Bond ladies, and we need a funny Q.

Dune felt completely lifeless and unmoving to me; which was immensely disappointing given how much I liked BR2049, Sicario, Prisoners, Incendies & Arrival.

There's a starkness to his style and I think it fit those other movies very well. But Dune -- to me -- is perfectly encapsulated by this letterboxd review:

"not bad if u ever just feel like staring at the colour orange and not feeling a single emotion for two and a half hours".

I hope he can bring some soul back for Bond.

What's odd to me is Sam Mendes' Skyfall felt less like a Sam Mendes take on Bond, but more like a Denis Villeneuve take on Bond already (though a part of that may be Deakins).

We thought it was Dune, but 007 will be his Dark Knight trilogy. Or two movies. This is his Christopher Nolan moment.

The pressure will be extremely high on him for this!

Villenevue is one of my favorite directors but I don't like that he is going mainstream with garbage like Bond. It's such trash. Fuck. I want to see more Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival or Blade Runner. Fuck anything other than fucking Bond. Urgh. Wasted potential.

Mostly agree with you, his unique / non-franchise films were so much more worthy of him. Although Blade Runner revival was incredible and not exactly a unique idea...

Controversial take, but I even think it's a waste that he spent so many years on Dune. It's too much of a "summer blockbuster" kind of series for him, not really something that uses his full powers--and he gave us enough in one film to show his vision, it's a bit tiring having three of these desert films.

Arrival is one of the greatest science fiction movies of all time, and worth 50 dune films imo

Henry Cavill will be the new Bond.

Amazon owns Bond.
Amazon is making new Highlander with Cavill.
Amazon is making a Warhammer cinematic universe with Cavill.
The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare was distributed by Amazon and starred Cavill.

Amazon = Cavill = Bond

Mila Kunis as the Bond girl with a story that involves them going to Ukraine.

As for the director, there's worse out there so I'll refrain from judgement until I see the movie.

Dudes in his 40's. Unless its a Timothy Dalton type stint, he'll be in well into his 50's by film 3 or 4. I think they'll go for someone younger. Bit too similar in style to Craig as well for my liking.

True but Moore was 45 in Live & Let Die, Dalton was 41 in The Living Daylights & Brosnan was 42 in Goldeneye. All very similar ages to what Cavill is/will be. Craig wasn't much younger at 38 in Casino Royale.

He's played similar roles before too so fits the style of the movies. But who knows, it may end up as a Holland & Zendaya adventure. :messenger_dizzy:

Easily. He should focus his creativity towards mind bending stuff like this. Or even go back to something like Enemy or maybe go back to his roots with something like Maelstrom or Incendies. Dude has had such a fantastic career crafting so many thought provoking movies it just grinds my gear he's doing something so shallow as James Bond. But you can tell that after Blade Runner he wants that blockbuster breakthrough that some of his contemporary peers enjoy, like James Cameron, Ridley Scott or Steven Spielberg. Despite his amazing career, Villeneuve is fairly unknown with the mainstream movie going audience.

People really forgot she was in No Time to Die already huh
cool, I didn't watch it -- last one I saw was Skyfall

but I didn't even mean her specifically, so much as "hey Denis, you consistently cast hot women in your films, until dune and zendface ruined the streak -- please go back and don't give us another smurf"

I think he's one of the best directors out there today. I thought Sicario was excellent so I could easily see him do a gritty Bond film.

Nicked from an older thread.

He thought he was too young for the role at the time (or MGM did). I genuinely think he'd be a good Bond.

If they phone, I hope he stops playing WoW for long enough to answer the call! :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I fuckin love Cavill as an actor. 10/10 would go to the theater to watch him play Bond multiple times.
