Way late to the party: Gamecube

Hell, I'm almost late to the funeral!

So I picked up a Gamecube (Mario Kart bundle) yesteryday, the local Fred Meyer had them ridiculously cheap at $50, so I couldn't pass it up. Before last night, I had never ever played a Gamecube, heck, I hadn't even held the controller in my hands.

So far I've picked up (all used for $20 or less, aside from the full priced RE4 and the bundled MKDD):
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Super Smash Bros.
Resident Evil 4
Metroid Prime
Mario Kart Double Dash

I'm extremely impressed with Resident Evil 4 so far, it's an absolutely incredible game, even with the PS2 port on the way, I can't see why anyone would want to wait until the fall or whenever it's getting released.

Any recommendations for other games? At the moment I'm thinking about picking up:
Super Mario Sunshine
Resident Evil 0
Resident Evil 1
Star Wars: Rogue Leader

Wasn't there just a thread like this? Anyway, you'd be a maroon not to own:

Pikmin
Pikmin 2
Metroid Prime 2
Tales of Symphonia
Baten Kaitos

The bolded/underlined part: The Gamecube library is all downhill from there. Shit, all the console libraries this generation are downhill from there. :P

Just kidding.

But on a serious note, I tried to replay RE0 and RE1 after beating RE4 and boy they're basically unplayable for me now. It's astonishing just how much RE4 did to invigorate the horror genre, because everything else just doesn't feel adequate.

Anyway, RE0 is mediocre. REmake is still good, but I can't play it anymore.

Super Mario Sunshine is like having pure fun injected directly into your eye. Ignore the haters.

Double Dash was a disappointment to me. F-Zero GX is one of the greatest racing games ever me imho and I reccomend that at the highest level.

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is good. Pick that shiz up. Nice suppliment to the first game.

PIKMIN 2 is still my choice for GOTY 2004, so I cannot reccomend that enough. It's quirky, it improves on the mediocre original in every conceivable way, and it is everything you want in a game.

Paper Mario:TTyD is also cool. If you're finally disgusted with RPGs like I am, it's a nice break from all those anime cliches, poorly written garbage plots that inhabit 99.8% of all RPGs these days.

And thankfully you picked up RE4 on GC. :D

I don't think I've ever said this about any game before, but seriously, after playing it, Resident Evil 4 is reason enough to get a Gamecube. I bought a PS2 and XBox both right at launch, there were always a couple games on the GC that I had my eye on, but I couldn't justify spending $100+ on another system.... then I found out my tax return is ~$1000, so I thought "what the hell".

Is it worth getting RE1 and RE0 after playing RE4? Or have I been spoiled by the new setup in 4?

Resident Evil 4 is the greatest game hands down this generation...you made the right choice by not waiting for the PS2 version.

Don't forget Viewtiful Joe and Viewtiful Joe 2, plus Super Monkey Ball and Super Monkey Ball 2.

If you don't already have Sonic Adventure (DX), Sonic Adventure 2 or Sonic Heroes on another system, those might be good buys too...and probably for cheap.

Skies of Arcadia...forgot that one.

RE4 is only like five trillion times better than RE1 and RE0. In fact, as I said... I can't play them anymore. And I played them BEFORE I was spoiled and loved REmake. RE0 was always mediocre though.

I'll wait for price drops on Metroid Prime 2, Paper Mario and Tales of Symphonia. I played (and absolutely love) Skies of Arcadia to death on the Dreamcast, and Baten Kaitos doesn't interest me in the least. I'm not a strategy fan, so the Pikmin games are just plain odd to me.

There is some fantastic cheap gaming to be had on the Cube, everyone that doesn't have one should pick one up.

I have Viewtiful Joe on the PS2, Sonic 1 and 2 on the Dreamcast, and I'll probably wait for the Monkey Ball comp on the Xbox.

It'll sure save me a couple dollars in bullets.

On Skies Legends: My sister played Skies for 60 hours, and Legends for almost 90. There's also some new story stuff intertwined with sidequests (
Ramirez's backstory
).

1 recommended game in each genre for GC newcomers:

Action-Survival: RE4
Adventure: Zelda WW
RPG: Tales of Symphonia
Platformer: Mario Sunshine
Adventure-Sci fi: Metroid Prime games
Racing: F-zero GX
Puzzle: Super Monkey Ball games
RTS: Pikmin games
2D action: Viewtiful Joe games
Fightning: Super Smash Bros Melee
Sport: Dunno, not into this genre much :P

metroid prime 2 (if youlike the first one, get this one)

eternal darkness (a lot of people around here seem to hate it, but it's a very cool, unique game with a great story)

super mario sunshine (not a perfect sequel, but it kicks more ass than just about any platformer this gen)

pikmin 2 (unique and cool. fairly epic compared to the first one)

f-zero GX (great great racer)

paper mario TTYD (awesome little rpg.)

also check into....

super monkey ball 2. (watch some videos first and make sure the basic gameplay appeals to you. The mini games are awesome.)

Exactly like that.

As for the Monkeyball reccomendations:

I'd skip them on Gamecube. Since you own another console it seems, just get Super Monkey Ball Deluxe on Xbox or PS2.

MY GAMECUBE RECOMMENDATIONS:

Action/Adventure: Beyond Good & Evil, LoZ: The Wind Waker, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

Platformers: Sonic Adventure 2: Battle or Sonic Heroes (buy them cheap if you buy them at all), Super Mario Sunshine, Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat, Viewtiful Joe 1/2

Racers: F Zero GX, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, 1080 Avalanche, SSX3

First Person Adventure: Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

First Person Shooter: Timesplitters 2

Old School Shooter: Ikaruga, Castle Shikigami II (import)

RPG: Baiten Kaitos, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Tales of Symphonia, Rune/Lost-Kingdoms I/II (again, buy cheap if at all), Skies of Arcadia (dreamcast port).

Online: Phantasy Star Online I & II, Phantasy Star Online III: CARD

GBA connectivity: Pacman VS (comes with R:Racers or Pacman World 2), The Legend of Zelda: The Four Swords

Fighting: the Naruto games (import), Soul Calibur II

Survival Horror: Resident Evil remake, Resident Evil 4, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Music: Donkey Konga (the PAL version is more challenging than the US one and has better songs IMO)

"Other": Pikmin 2, Super Monkey Ball 1/2

Multiplayer must haves: Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Super Monkey Ball 1/2, Wario Ware Mega Game$, Timesplitters 2, Pacman VS (requires one GBA), The Four Swords (requires two or more GBA)

The great thing about GCN being 'third' here in the west is the awesomely cheap system and games. Good to have you aboard the good ship multiplatform! :)

Timesplitters 2 is just as good on either of the other systems, on Xbox and PS2 you get system link if thats of any use to you, but I'd stay away from the PS2 version simply because you'd need a multitap (boooo!). Mario Kart was a great buy if you pick up some extra pads. You'll always go back to it once in a while with buddies, til it gets old, then you'll be back again, then it'll be old.. etc. The Super Monkey Ball games can't come highly recommended enough. They have a challengingly fun single player mode and the multiplayer is unparalleled on Gamecube. Pick up the Super Monkey Ball games if you see them cheap. Monkey Ball DX isn't out for a while, and you can bet it'll retail at full price.

You've picked up some of the best games by far and away already. Give Resident Evil 4 a break every now and then to check them all out!

Oh and watch out for Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat if you like old school platformers
My mini review of it is here

God, how could I have forgotten Paper Mario? I can't recommend that enough, either. GC had such a good last five months last year.

GBA connectivity: The Legend of Zelda: The Four Swords

Fighting: the Naruto games (import), Soul Calibur II

Survival Horror: Resident Evil remake, Resident Evil 4, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (mediocre)

Music: Donkey Konga (the PAL version is more challenging than the US one and has better songs IMO... added note: almost every other drum game is better, but Donkey Konga got those damned bongos. And if you get the US version, prepare for your ears to bleed)

"Other": Pikmin 2, Animal Crossing (I put this one here ONLY for one person, but please note I hate this game on every level)

Wow, your list sure did have a lot of fat. I cut out the games that are better on other platformers or play much better due to different button layouts (Beyond Good and Evil is best on Xbox, SSX3 is better on PS2, Timesplitters 2 is good on all systems, but not best on Gamecube ... slight inconsequential differences, but for multiconsole owners fleshing out libraries is good this way).

Also I cut out 1080 Avalance. I don't want him to die from the suck.

SSX3 is still really good on GC :) Timesplitters is mediocre on all systems. But good call on 1080...what a piece of shite. To echo another poster...the whole dang hobby is downhill from RE4 haha.

SSX3 is good on GC. It's just that it's better on another system.

Timesplitters 1 could be classified as mediocre, but Timesplitters 2 is f00kin' awesome imho. Xbox just has the better controller for FPSers, though. And of course more power under the hood, although it's barely noticeable if at all for TS2.

You should have waited for the PS2 version of RE 4. It's only a year away.

Don't pass up monkeyball 1 on gamecube. I'm sure deluxe is going to interfere with the main game. Monkey ball 1's main game is perfect.

Monkeyball Deluxe is not going to interfere with anything. It's basically a combination of one and twos levels with some other new shit. It'll be awesome if you like Monkey Ball, and almost certainly the definitive version of Monkey ball.

And why the hell should he have waited for PS2 RE4? Sure, if you own a PS2 only there's no reason to buy a GC just for RE4 since you'll be getting it anyway, but if you do own a Gamecube waiting for PS2 RE4 is the stupidest thing ever.

I thought someone in the monkeyball deluxe screen thread said they saw monkey ball 1 levels with titles and that sort of thing. I have a feeling they are going to mix levels between 1 and 2. which would be bad. monkey ball 1 main game mode, if untouched in deluxe, will be great. But I bet it gets messed with.

:lol

PS2 version has extras durrrrr.

We don't even know what the extras are going to be. Would it be worth going through the inevitable visual downgrade for a playable Dante?

Personally i never thought my GC game collection would grow that big and that i'd be so satisfied with it, its really a kickass console imo, its surpassing my ps2 collection by 2 or 3 titles, all games i've bought for it are definitely staying in my collection and i've enjoyed all of them, except a single one that i bought on impulse, sonic adventure dx, but it was cheap..

I hope nintendo keep their promise and that revolution is backward compatible.

Oh and get RE0 and remake, Yes i know after RE4 its going to be hard, but i did play back RE, its different, its the roots of RE and its always going to be a classic for me, its a must own on gamecube imo.

Hell, I'm almost late to the funeral!

I was about to say the same thing. :-D

Anyway, I don't think you can truly go wrong with Super Mario Sunshine. If you're a completionist it's very long and pretty challenging. On the other hand, I still don't have all the shines and I haven't been playing it much since learning there isn't much of a reward in store.

**Thumbs up** You're NOT FUCKING RETARDED!! ;)

I'd say go with the games your thinking about. They're all pretty good. All I can do now is recommend games that have already been recommend and tell you to ignore Musashi Wins!

I was one of the people that was really disappointed with Double Dash after playing it for the first few times. Lately we've been able to get 4 skilled gamers together, and this game just shines. Turn the items to basic though, the super powers are just cheesy, but good for some laughs on 4p baby park. One of the best 4 player games there is definately.

Fzero comes highly recommended. Both the Metroids. I also pop in Sunshine every once in a while to kick around some fruit.

I agree completely. Pikmin 2 is absolutely awesome. Seeing as how you have two controllers, you will also be able to partake in the extremely enjoyable multiplayer.

I picked mine up during Christmas. At the low prices for the GC and its games, it has been the greatest gaming purchase I have made in quite awhile.

I do like these threads, It reminds me of the rather large backlog of games I need to get for my recently re-purchased GC.

There's only two titles exclusive to the Cube that would make me care enough to pick it up and that Beach Spikers(which I hope gets ported to both the Xbox and PS2) and Star Fox Assualt. Anything else is meh

I'm not sure if that last post is sarcasm or not...

Nintendo produce some good things,Yes. In reality however I've pretty much grown out of them. The only thing from Nintendo I see myself still attatch to,is the Star Fox titles(minus Star Fox Adventures) since it was the main motivator behind me owning both a SNES and N64.

Pick up Four Swords. I thought it was more fun and refreshing than Wind Waker.
Yeah, if you can play this game the way its meant to be played, its one of the best games this gen.

Get Mario Sunshine and Super Monkey Ball. By Super Monkey Ball, I mean the first. I don't have experience with multiplayer in either, but the level design in the original is simply better and a lot less gimmicky IMO than the sequel (which does seem to have a more extensive multiplayer mode).

And SMS is a great game. It is not nearly as consistently good as other Mario games, and it's not as polished, but when it's good, it's the best fucking 3D platformer ever. The controls and feel of the game are fucking brilliant, and some of the levels are like a virtual playground of platforming bliss. I kinda regret selling it a couple years ago now. :(

I do like these threads, It reminds me of the rather large backlog of games I need to get for my recently re-purchased GC.
Heh, exact same situation here.

Not enough love for Wave Race: Blue Storm or Beach spikers. Both great games.

Mario Party 5 and 6 are worth owning as well, as long as you play multiplayer games.

Mario Tennis is excellent as well, and if you're into golf, Mario Golf is worth having.

The little 'cube that could.

Definitely recommend:
-Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
-Pikmin 2
-F-Zero GX
-The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures (only if you can get 4 people with GBA SP's in a room together)
-Soul Calibur 2
-Resident Evil

Somewhat recommend:
-Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike (try to get it cheap)
-Resident Evil 0
-Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
-Super Mario Sunshine

Don't play Resident Evil 4 unless you get tired of the first two, otherwise you'll never go back to them. Trust me.
