What could work though? It's hard to find something that could be a success, that isn't connected to the big name heroes in anyway. Suicide Squad? Animal Man? Another Constantine maybe?

It's actually very easy with complete unknown properties, the "mid tier", now that's difficult. You can make a Suicide Squad movie work because people don't know what it is, now making a Hawkgril movie, that's impossible.

I think it's easier to make unknown properties a success because the audiences have no expectations. A lot of the backlash Man of Steel has gotten is a result of it not meeting the expectations for what people think a Superman movie should be. (Mind you, that movie has still been a success at the box office and many people like it.)

With a property like Secret Six, for example, there's no expectation. It's an entirely new concept to most audiences. All they would need to do is put together a good cast/film and a decent ad campaign and people will turn out.

I think that's why DC is looking into properties like Sandman and Metal Men; their other famous characters like Wonder Woman and Aquaman are so dug into pop culture consciousness (and not in an entirely good way) that it might be worth it to try and elevate some lesser known ip. You can limit the budgets and potentially have a little more creative freedom.

Sci Fi movies are expensive.I only see marvel pumping how cool GoG is with their new show.and probably tons of games.but it will 100% be a avengers 2 lead up.

Trying to adapt Sandman to film is almost surely a recipe for disaster. It's entire plot structure is way too big and scattered for a 2.5 hour movie. Even if they try to break it up by story arcs, that's going to be what, 10+ films to conclude it? If they do it properly? Which you know they won't. It'd have some hope as a TV show, but a movie is simply insanity.

I feel Aquaman and Wonder Woman are better opportunities because they have the dubious honor of being both really famous AND criminally underrepresented. Their name alone will catch a good deal of audiences while also keeping their expectations in check due to ignorance of the actual characters.
 
Honestly DC movie threads are pointless since the studio has no idea what its doing. Even if a batman beyond is really proposed and considered its very likely they will scrape it for something random like a low budget Lobo movie that completely misses the point of the comics.

I imagine Sandman will be a television project. DC was willing to put Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Arrow on TV, after all. They clearly have a stake and interest in the television business.

They're both famous, but not for the right reasons. Aquaman especially has an uphill battle after years of falling victim to every lazy "lol only talks to fish" joke in the book. It's not going to help at box office when everyone thinks your character is a joke. Something like Animal Man, however, does not have that problem.

Both come with their own risks, of course. But I do think it shows some good thinking on DC's part that they're considering both the big name characters and lesser known characters as priorities for the future.
 
Honestly, this is the best thing for them to do if they want to make a JL movie or even a World's Finest. They need a Batman that can withstand some serious punches and pull his own weight with MoS Superman. Ergo, they need Batman to be able to fly and have his nanosuit (which doesn't seem too farfetched, at least to me). They can even have it be Bruce Wayne, it doesn't have to be Terry.

I would love it, personally. I friggin loved Batman Beyond.
 
They should take the Sherlock approach to adapting Sandman (this is a Sandman thread now) and create 90 minute long mini-movies for every arc.
 
That's the smartest thing to do right now. Man universe is a step no other Batman movie can achieve right, so Batman Beyond is the logical step. Change the story a bit and bring JGL back. I still wish they didn't give him the name "Robin" as that's just stupidly stupid of Nolan.

I don't see that as a such a bad thing. Because of that, you'll automatically have people who go see Aquaman just to see how much fail he is. Or, they'll ask their friend who did see it how much fail it was. Either way, the infamy of Aquman's suckage is such that it will capture people's attention.

After that, the trick is to prove them wrong and make the movie awesome. Or they may not even have to go that far and just market it well. Part of Man of Steel's success is the excellent marketing. The very trailers promised that, unlike the snoozefest that was Superman Returns, this one will be full of heart pumping action.

But I do agree that it's good that DC is FINALLY moving past Batman and Superman. I just wish I had assurance that they will be good movies.

The problem with sandman is that it's structure is very up and down. You can have an 10+ issue arc centering around one event. Then you have this single out of nowhere issue dedicated to explaining Nada's backstory or introducing Hob. Sometimes it happens in the middle of an ongoing story arc. These are important things, but they often aren't made relevant until much later. It worked for a comic book because you got the story in short 20~ page bursts a month anyway, so a small interruption wasn't a big deal, but it won't work for a movie where every minute is precious and you don't see the next part for 2 years. A single ongoing story arc like a normal TV show seems to be the best option, since that's the closest structure to comic books anyway (you get a short periodic burst of story like in comics)

This! Old Man Logan is one my favourite comic book stories, would defintely love to see this adapted, along with Superman Red Son which is probably at the top of my list.

As for live action Batman Beyond, I find the concurrent timelines interesting... Where MoS/Batman/JL take place now while BB takes place in the future of that cinematic universe. If Warner Bros. can pull it off, it will be spectacular.
 
I kinda wanna see Karl Urban as Batman. Somehow. Maybe Middle-Aged Terry. But if we get Batman Beyond, it'll most likely be an origin story with a real young Terry. What actor is like a good young Karl Urban?

Give me a mix of Nolan's serious tone, mixed with some of the more fantastical elements from the comics, and keep Wayne in the cowl instead. How about that WB?

Based on what I know of Sandman (haven't read it yet; in my backlog), it would be right at home as an HBO series. Warner has no problem doing fantasy shows based on books after all, with "Game of Thrones" and "True Blood" both being immensely popular.

Legendary put 75% of the film's budget, WB the remaining 25% plus the bulk of the marketing. I don't think it'll matter much if PR bombs or is successful.

Doing Beyond as a future-version of the MoS universe (which is apparently going to host Justice League) is a really damn risky proposition. They'd be writing themselves into corners at every turn, nailing down the future of films yet to be written.

Bruce Timm went pretty deep on a podcast with Kevin Smith about how he seriously worked for a long time on a take on this before Begins got made. This is obviouly just a rumor, but for a while there WB definetly wanted to get this thing done, so who knows.

AFAIK Batman Beyond has never been off the table at WB so this really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. They were apparently considering a big relaunch of the cartoon a few years ago (which Nolan's Batman might have killed) so it's definitely an IP they are interested in.

The beauty being that, if they were inclined, WB could have a 'darker' contemporary Batman that was closer to the Arkham Asylum games and a more 'family friendly' Batman Beyond film to compliment it.

This actually was WB's plan when they had originally set Darren Aronofsky to direct a crazy, fucked up Batman Year One style movie and announced a Batman Beyond film right alongside it. Neither went forward and we got Batman Begins instead.
