Wearing a class ring

Is wearing a class ring that much different from people wearing hoodies/t-shirts with their college's name printed on it? (I see college hoodies everywhere).

Well, instead of a normal piece of clothing that's 30 bucks, it's a 1000 dollar piece of gaudy jewellery.

what else are you gonna give to your girl when you decide to go steady?

No, they weren't all happy days. Like the time Pinky Tuscadero crashed her motorcycle, or the night I lost all my money to those card sharks and my dad Tom Bosley had to get it back.

I don't know what it's like for other schools, but A&M does NOT mess around with their class ring stuff. It's not just a ring or an accessory, it's an ingrained part of student life. It's part of your identity as a student. I don't know a single person to have graduated without their ring and all the people I know who have one wear it even after graduation to their jobs. It signifies you're a part of the Aggie Network. If you get caught cheating at this school, one of the consequences is being ineligible to get an Aggie Ring and it's considered very shameful. It is a deeply-rooted part of the Aggie culture here at A&M. There are traditions associated with your ring (people who get their rings do a "ring dunk"), the ring stands for the highest code of ethics and honor, etc. It's something every senior does pretty much. Thousands of families come into town on ring weekend to celebrate their relative reaching their final year at A&M and earning their ring. People usually take their picture by the giant ring when they pick it up:

There are even scholarships you can get to afford your ring if you don't have the money. It's that big of a deal to A&M students.

I don't even have my ring yet although I'm a senior (getting it next semester hopefully since I couldn't afford it this semester and didn't try to get a scholarship) but whether I like it or not I'm basically required to be a part of this ritual lol.

LOL. what a bunch of tools.

I have my high school ring that was about $180. It's currently in my room on the shelf above my desk where I put random stuff like my graduation tassle thing, the ring, my diploma, some other stuff like that.

That's what I'm saying.

Oddly, I get the sense that the people insulting Aggie way of life believe they are enlightened because they are "free" from such "archaic" traditions like they are better for it. Meanwhile, they get enraged over people displaying pride for a significant part of their life.

They don't really seem enraged. Appalled seems more appropriate. Personally, I think it's somewhat pathetic.

I think I wore my ring for about a week before it went into a drawer where I assume it still lives. Not only am I not a ring person, I'm not a gaudy jewelry person and 99% of these rings are definitely that. Waste of money for me, but hey everyone was doing it, and following the herd is what college was all about.

holy shit that's creepily lame

A long time ago, I put my high school class ring on my keychain, and it's stayed there ever since. It's too gawdy to wear (and also too small now), but it suits me just fine with my keys.

Also, I paid maybe 50 dollars for mine. F that $1500 noise.

I graduated a year and a half ago and my high school sold class rings. I can understand getting a class ring from your college, but considering that, for the most part, the high school you attend is a matter of zoning, there's hardly any prestige attached to where you went to high school, and I don't see much point in showing it off.

True, but my town has one high school.

Additionally I graduated 23 years ago, so times are a bit different.

School pride is one thing, but this is just stupid.

Class rings are like letter jackets. You're never going to wear them after the fact, but possibly nice to refresh some memories if you manage not to lose it. There are a lot more affordable, and better ways to do this though....like looking through some old pictures or talking with friends. I can only imagine Jostens makes money hand over fist so I figure the class ring business is all a racket, especially high school rings.

the only reason i'd spend 1500 on a ring that looks like that is if it gave me magic powers.

does it have +to sneak or something?

it's probably +1 light radius, blah

i didn't get one but that's because i couldn't afford it/didn't want to bother with it.

my parents really wanted me to get one until i told them to buy it for me, then suddenly class rings became 'stupid' and a 'racket' and whatever other negative stuff you can say about em

How does GAF feel about wearing a class ring (specifically from a college) around in public? I recently received my ring, but I honestly don't know how to feel about it. I never wear jewelry and I feel like a douche when I wear it, but I spent well over $1500 for it and I don't want to just have it sit in a case...

If it's something you enjoy wearing, by all means, go for it. If not, I'd try to figure out how to get that $1,500 back.

I made a point of skipping all class rings. I don't need a reminder of my student debt wrapped around my finger.

I will say, though... class rings are good for child discipline. They sell similar rings to people in the military.

My dad would turn his around to where the jewel would face to the inside of his hand. And then he'd whap us on the top of the head with it. Really got the point across without needing to actually beat the shit out of us.

Those big rings look tacky. I have an engineering iron ring (canadian). It has a meaning, it's small and is made of stainless steel. It cost something like 30 bucks. Before I got mine, I never noticed it on other people.

I graduated from UT and didn't buy one. Fortunately my school doesn't expect all of their alumni to visibly show the world school pride through a $500 plus ring. If you don't get a ring at A&M, you don't get a ring dunk ceremony, and are therefor not a part of the culture. its baffling to watch two aggy alums noticing eachothers ring while walking in public, like they are lost members of the justice league. "aggy ring power activate. WHOOOOOP!" its disgusting

It's like "oh great you graduated from Harvard, but at the bottom if your class and you've killed 10 patients in the last 3 years".

Leave em at home.

wearing a class ring? no way in hell I would ever do that and I love my high school

they should send me 20K ring for all I've done for my HS

That line that separates the gaming thread from OT was lost in this thread. Next-gen UT rings are gonna rock 8 carrots at double the data rate.

For whatever reason, I thought these just existed in film parodies and comedies. I can't imagine dropping that kind of money on a ring for an institution you're gonna forget about a couple of years into your career.

I honesty don't mean disrespect. I just think it's a foolish amount of money to spend given you're not even sure you're gonna wear it.

Edit- woah woah woah. This is for HIGH SCHOOL? Not even college/uni? What in the world....

Then again... I've seen Texas EX bumper sticker-bedazzled trucks circle each other in an attempt to start up a conversation in a parking lot like they're two dogs sniffing each other's asses in preparation for mating. Everyone's got their shame.

Oh come on now... Texas Exes have their quirks surely!

Are there Texas Exes quirks/traditions? I finally got mine last fall, but only cause I was on campus for a game (my first ever) and cause I was able to get the spouse price through the bf :lol

All I do to show it is use the keychain.

I used to work at the place that makes most of these rings(Jostens, mentioned on the 1st page).

They also do a lot of sports championship rings. I worked in shipping and had a few replica rings worth between $200-$2000 come through my line and they were pretty darn awesome.

I never got a high school ring but might get a college one.
