Wearing a class ring

Class rings always seemed like a racket to me - like Jostens or whoever decided they'd brute force something pointless into a fake tradition to cash in on the unsuspecting.

Regardless of their purpose or validity, they look incredibly tacky. If you want strangers to know where you went to college, wear a ratty T-shirt or sweatshirt.

It always amazes me how college is made out to be such a massive deal to some americans.
Not only the class rings, but also in just general school spirit/pride as showcased by college football leagues.

Spoken like someone who went to a school without a football team.

In Canada, you can't get a scholarship for athletics, so most of our university teams aren't all that great. Some people go to the games, and they get broadcasted on the local cable channel, but that's about it. The NHL does most of its recruiting out of the CHL junior leagues or from the AHL teams. College sports don't really set you up for the pros here. You definitely don't have 50k people going to college games.

?

Universities are not private, and athletic scholarships are not offered. If you are really good, you go to an American school (or just skip college like a lot of NHL draftees). The only Canadian scholarships offered are academic or needs based.

Explains why our teams at UBC were shit.

The fuck are you talking about?

The primary reason most Canadian schools teams suck is because anyone with any sort of talent gets scouted and goes to the US. Has nothing to do with the lack of sports scholarships.
