Well, what about Square's fighters returning next-gen?

All that talk about Powerstone got me thinking about Square's fighters. I'm not entirely sure, but I don't think PS2 saw a lot of Square's fighters this gen (with the exception of The Bouncer?). What do you think the chances are of them making an appearance next-gen? I think Square did a lot more experimentation on PSX than PS2, though I'm not sure if that's a good or bad sign. =/

I never played Tobal No. 2, but I heard it a pretty good. BTW, is it just me, or does the character design and artwork from Tobal look a bit reminiscent of Dragonball Z's artstyle?

No thanks. I have bad memories of Tobal, Bouncer, and that PSOne fighter that began with an E... Ergheiz? I can do without any and all of those.

I don't think any of the developers for these titles have ties with Square Enix anymore, so they'd either have to make the games in-house (who would do them?), or find another company to handle them (again, who?)... Overall, I'd say the chances are pretty slim.

Tobal was okay for the time I guess. Wasn't Tobal 2 supposed to be much better? Ergheiz sucked, Bushido Blade was mildly entertaining at release, otherwise no. 2 wasn't much better, and Bouncer...just no.

I'd much rather see a sequel to Einhander than any of these. x10000000.

Dream Factory is no more, thus Tobal and Ehrgeiz are dead. That's a damned shame too, because they were one of the more forward thinking development houses when it came to fighters.

Now, we're stuck with dumb shits like Itagaki. Who're content to continue copying the VF formula w/ BOOBIES. :/

I've no idea what happened to the Bushido Blade dev team, but after that second game it would take gratuitous oral from Kim Smith to change my mind about them.

We need another Ehrgeiz. Better yet an entirely FF fighter. Squall vs. Cloud! Lionheart vs. Omnislash!

Why did they take injuring legs out of Bushido Blade 2? That was the best part about 1.

Tobal 2 was fucking awesome, a pretty revolutionary fighter for its day. Too bad Dream Factory died/turned to shit. Tobal needs to be left alone...

I think a new Bushido Blade would work and could be made by almost anybody as long as they had some talent. But since most of the Dream Factory people left, a good Tobal sequel is pretty much impossible at this point.

I think as a whole the fighting game genre has gotten much smaller this generation and will be even smaller next-gen (how many fighters sell besides VF/Tekken/SC/DoA?). So it's not very appealing for S-E to put up the money to make one. Though I wouldn't mind a new game mixing the gameplay of Bushido Blade with an action beat-em-up adventure like the Bouncer.

Light Weight (the developer) apparently moved on to make the "Kengo" series, "Kabuki Warriors," and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" for PS2.

I don't think the same people that made BB 1 made those other titles, because the games took a very sharp turn for the worse starting with BB 2.

The character designs were done by the same guy, Akira Toriyama.

Edit: oops, didn't see that someone else already said that.

Didn't some of these same people make that awful fighter for Xbox? Kakuto Chojin (sp?) or whatever the hell it's called?

So strange. I loved Bushido Blade back in the day.

Dream Factory made Tobal No. 1, Tobal No. 2, Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring, The Bouncer, Kabuto Chojin, and I think a few UFC games, too.

Light Weight made the Bushido Blade series and the ones I listed above, at least according to GameSpot and a few other sources. But as Yusaku pointed out, it's possible that there were either multiple developers on the series, or that a lot of the key staff left after development of the original title. All we know for sure is that something happened which caused a pretty massive downgrade of quality in their titles...

I'll like to disagree with you about Ergheiz. If we're talking about the console version, I could understand, but the arcade version was much, much better.

Never played Ehrgeiz in the arcades, but the PS1 version is horrendous. And if I remember correctly, the final version had worse graphics than the demo that came with Brave Fencer Musashiden. Dunno what happened to Dream Fucktory, but they sure as hell turned to shit after T2.

During Bouncer, large chunks of Dreamfactory went to Anchor Inc (now dead) which made the first Dreamcast UFC (good!), Pride PS2 (okay), and Raw 1+2 (awful). The other chunks stayed there and did Kuso Chojin and "updated" the UFC games each year and did Crimson Tears for Capcom (blech).

Fun story about DF, apparently they couldn't figure out how to do the Anchor motion algorithm on the Xbox, so they just saved every keyframe for every move at 60hz :lol

I still play Bushido Blade 2 from time to time with friends. I liked part 1, and the crippling was fun, but the only other aspect I missed in 2 was the ability to attack in the air for cheap kills(Death from above!). Bushido Blade 2 was much more refined in every way and had far more depth-not immediately noticeable because the of teh change in controls- (as well as Tony Umeda, Afro Ninja extraordinaire), better graphics, and much faster, smoother play.

Einhander was awesome too. The dungeon mode in Ehrgeiz was fun, even if the fighter was weak- which is why I was eager to play Crimson Tears. Pity it was so dull.

I thought there isnt going to be any more bushido blade games because they were made between square/sony... and sony doesnt want to make anymore... or something like that.

I would pay good money for a game that had Tobal 2's fighting system on a modern graphics engine. I still play it every now and then. I got a mean Gren Kuts.

omg The Bouncer...don't remind me...talk about a disaster. I preordered that garbage and beat it a couple of hours after to my astonishment. This was a square game right?
