Push Square: PS6 Could Be the Only Next-Gen Console Charging for Online Multiplayer

Plus it's not like PC is free. Windows is technically paid and there's rumour about the sub model for Windows, plus I'm sure Microsoft will find a way to hide something gaming-related in Windows behind the recurring paywall.

With Linux on Steam deck running games so well, they're not in a good position to do something like that. They know they're losing ground.

Xbox will be a PC.

On Switch 2, online multiplayer will be a paid service.

The PS6 will be a console, and since it will be subsidized, so will it.

One that isn't a PC running Steam games made for PC.

One that has an OS created for it and optimized for games, and its games are coded natively to run for that console to take full advantage of its hardware in a more optimized way.
So Magnus will run Steam games only? Will Xbox be selling Steam games then?

Magnus will not have games optimized for the fixed spec?

The article is suggesting the Switch will not be the same generation as the new PlayStation, or a direct competitor..

Nintendo does change for its online multiplayer. But you also get access to their retro gaming catalogs, the level of which depends on your subscription level. But I don't think the article states Nintendo does not charge.
PS Plus Essential also offers perks beyond online MP play, such as monthly games.
And yeah, suggesting that Switch 2 will not be in the same generation as the PS6 is exactly the bullshit part.

PS6 could be the only next-gen console charging for online multiplayer.
Next Xbox could be the only next-gen console that is a PC, not a console.
Switch 2 could be the only next-gen console that some people don't call it next gen.

I don't know why Microsoft hasn't already done this. It would be one of the things they could use against Sony. Sony has sucked this gen and Microsoft has just repeatedly shot themselves in the foot.
I would assume the complication is that online multiplayer is included in Gamepass. Now if you don't reduce the price of Gamepass what do you tell your Gamepass customers? Just eat the cost because you subscribed to Gamepass?

Online paywall is how they make you pay the equivalent of a new console every generation.

Never again

But it's funny how Xbox not charging for multiplayer is described as a choice they've made and not by the fact they are giving up the console business and selling you a PC.

I think it's going to be a PC with Windows that will run Windows games an apps only (from the MS store, Steam, Epic, emulators...).

A Windows that by default will launch on boot the launcher of the MS PC game store in a Steam Big Picture like mode designed to be played on a tv or hanheld PC using a gamepad. You'll be able to launch from there your PC games bought elsewhere (like Steam or Epic Store). Regarding the Xbox games from the OG Xbox, 360 (not all, only those included in the BC of the Series X|S) and XBO that don't have a PC version in the MS PC store, will be there emulated in the same way Sony has PS1/PS2/PSP games on the PS4/PS5 stores or that Xbox already have them on Xbox Series X|S.

So no, there won't be games mades compiled only for it. It will just run normal PC Winows games because it will be a normal PC running Windows. Even if when sold by some manufacturers it will be shaped as a home console. Think a Microsoft version of the Steam machines.

I can see that FUD machine against PS6 really started early... but ignore that another big company (NIntendo) does the same thing just to criticize sony is beyond ridiculous.

I don't know why people struggle to understand this.

They need to stop looking at it from a console perspective.

Ok, so for the Xbox ecosystem, it will just be Xbox PC games according to you. So EA, Epic, Rockstar, Ubisoft publishers don't have games in Xbox PC store, does that mean Magnus won't be able to run games from those publishers? So you are saying no Madden 27, EA FC 27, FortNite on Magnus?

Now, do you have a source for the fact that the "improper" console will NOT have games optimized/compiled for that fixed spec hardware? Or is that simply your conjecture?

I said 'Magnus' is going to be just a PC running Windows, so will run Windows games. Like any PC running Windows, won't be limited to the ones of the MS store.

Like any other PC running Windows, will be able to run the PC games these publishers released for Windows in any PC store: Steam, Epic Store, EA Play, GoG, Xbox PC store, Ubisoft Connect so on.

Epic won't kill the PC version of Fornite, so will be playabele there. EA will continue releasing their sports games on PC, so will be playable there.

According to my theory, in the next gen the Xbox ecosystem will be limited to the Xbox PC app (+ its cloud gaming). This device won't be a console: will be a PC.

Like everything else in this thread it's just my personal theory out of my ass, just based on the several related announcements, hints or rumors. Even if I have many friends/former coworkers working in different MS owned studios, I have no insider info about their next gen plans.

But seeing the Xbox branded Asus Rog Ally and Meta Quest, MS allowing to include PC games bought in other stores in their Xbox PC app launcher, adding a Big-Picture like , Phil saying they'll make tweaks to Windows to adapt it to consolize PCs, Satya Nutella saying his stuff about multiplatform, MS replacing the Xbox branding for Microsoft Gaming in several places, the Xbox marketshare getting smaller and smaller every quarter and many other things make me think that.

Aside Helldivers 2, COD/Battlefield and EA Sports Soccer, all the main multi-player games are playable online for free in Playstation... Genshin, Star Rail, Marvel Rivals, PUBG, Fortnite, Zenless Zone Zero, Warframe, World of Tanks, Where Winds Meet..

Exactly. All F2P games have free online. Also eliminating Switch 2, adding the word "could" just to have a headline lmao

The exceptions you listed ARE the biggest multiplayer games. CoD and Sports games and GTA Online are what people buy consoles for, in addition to FortNite and Minecraft.

What would you personally do if PS6 is charging $80 a year for multiplayer while Magnus does not?

People also buy Sony and Nintendo consoles for their first party exclusives.

4 out Top 5 and 6 out of Top 10 best selling PS4 games are from Sony.

4 out Top 5 and 5 out of Top 10 best selling PS5 games are from Sony. And Wolverine and Intergalactic (maybe even Saros) would definitely be part of that list.

4 out Top 5 and 7 out of Top 10 best selling PS3 games are from Sony. 8 out of Top 10 if you include MGS4.

Also GTA games always had a fanbase in Playstation since GTA III in PS2, so its funny that you implied that GTA only sells on Playstation due to GTA Online. Even before GTA Online, GTA V sold 29 million copies in PS3.

According to Kepler PS6 costs 600 $ and Magnus 1200 $. Most importantly if Microsoft could make paying to play online free they would have already done so. Are we forgetting that Microsoft tried to remove yearly plan of Game Pass Core? Where did you come to the conclusion that Magnus won't have paying to play online.

If everyone dropped pay to play online, Sony would follow suit. I am sure they would drag out the change as long as possible, or maybe not at all if they dont feel sales are suffering due to the decision. I suppose theyll just weigh up the predicted loss of sales vs the loss of revenue / profit to drop pay to play online.

The only thing I wish Sony and Nintendo offered its customers free of charge was cloud saves.

The biggest irony is that it was Xbox that literally started charging for online play. You had that for free on PS3. (crappy servers and all but still it was free)

Sony didn't pay for it because they couldn't it was too barebones. That changed as they invested money to offer a service on par with Xbox live.

I personally don't play online, so this doesn't affect me at all.

I was a PSN+ subscriber some years ago and didn't play online either, but was worth it because free games and discount in digital.

But with time, I found I enjoyed more playing only what I selected and bought and not entering in whichever game I was offered. If you buy 2 games monthly, you don't even have time to play the free ones. And if you buy everything digital you nearly make up for the amount paid on PSN+ with the discount, but I found I vastly preferred having my phisical games so relegated digital ones to the 5-10 dollars offers, 12 maximum, and the discount in those is negligible. So I unsuscribed from PSN+.

PSN + is getting now more enticing options as using the Portal to play streaming your digital games if you are Premium, but having most of my catalogue phisical IDK. Last month's I have bought some digital games as Assassin's Creed Syndicate (5 euros), Batm Arkham Knight (5 euros), Tales of Vesperia (4 euros) or Snow Bros Wonderland (4.50 euros) in PSN, maybe if I go on a trip I will subscribe and take the Portal with me, but for the moment being it's not necessary, even if I am at my parents house I can access my PS5 and it's digital content(and the game I am currently using on disc) very easily.

Magnus is a PC, all digital no phisical games , that Windows nightmare pointing its ugly face, free online is great but if it's with PC online that will be world of cheaters. Plus it will be very expensive, to be bought on demand on MS Store and all it's games will go to Playstation 6, I really don't think it's for me.

The irony was that most PS3 games had dedicated servers and xbox games were p2p and 360 was out there charging for it.

I still remember playing gears 1 and thinking what a shit online experience it was coming from Epic, who had a bunch of Unreal Tournament games that ran fine with dial-up and IDSN back in the day. Cable connection and xbox live? Dogshit. Unequitable.
