Western Animation |OT| Cartoon, Cartoon, Cartoon

This week's question is simple

Do you prefer Disney's stable of Mickey, Minnie, Donald, etc or WB's with Bugs, Daffy and the likes
Between the two? I can enjoy watching the early 40's-late 50's Looney Tunes shorts & they never fail to make me laugh (along with analyzing them for reference when working on a show for gag ideas). With Disney's theatrical shorts from the same span of time, only the Goofy "How To" shorts from the 40's can achieve a similar purpose.

Of course, I'm more of a filthy hoar with the Fleischer Bros. cartoons. Can't get enough Popeye punching the crap out of Bluto to stop Olive from sleep walking or the surreal, nightmarish cartoons from Koko & co.

While I have a soft spot for the Black and White Mickey Mouse cartoons and enjoy the new Paul Rudish shorts, I have to say that Looney Tunes almost completely dominates in terms of quality for me. The highs of characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and others are just too impressive from both an animation and direction standpoint. Duck Amuck, The Rabbit of Seville, What's Opera Doc, are all pure genius.

That being said, Disney wasn't without its own creativity. The Goofy How to shorts and stuff like the Band Concert are exceptionally good.

As others have said WB smashes this category. Their characters are way more memorable. Aside from what you said + pluto and goofy, I honestly can't think of any other disney characters, and those are far less memorable than even just bugs bunny, much less the rest of the toons.

Gotta agree with Esto, Looney Tunes are overall superior. If anything, it just feels like they're exposed more. It really doesn't help that Disney doesn't play/release/air classic Mickey Mouse shorts. But the Paul Rudish shorts are great.

You're a frame-by-frame guy? It looks miles better of course imo but I'm more interested in comedy writing so if I could rig a few characters to mess around with it would be much easier for me. I think I'll give Moho a go.

Haha yeah.

Moho is definitely the better of the two programs from my limited experience. Good luck.

I can attest to that, as I heavily grew up on Looney Tunes and their numerous spin-offs running on Nickelodeon, Kids WB and Cartoon Network. Space Jam was among the first few movies I've ever seen, actually. Disney had classic shorts running on TV when I was young (and I can still remember the Goofy how-to shorts in particular), but they soon went away. I wouldn't see anything like them again until House of Mouse premiered, and years later, the Paul Rudish Mickey Mouse shorts.

TMS Entertainment animated Feat of Clay part 2 in Japan, while Feat of Clay part 1 was animated by a lesser studio in South Korea. You could definitely see the difference in quality between episode 1 and 2.

TMS was awesome, I believe they did several Real Ghostbusters episodes too. The RGB episodes that's were done overseas completely looked night and day better than the others.

WB wins this easily.

Disney has a great stable of characters. The problem is they didn't do enough with them.

When I was a kid in the '80s, syndicated Looney Toons were a staple of TV, and were fairly consistent. Disney shorts, though? Those were on once in a blue moon. The lack of material feels almost like the characters are from an alternate reality, to put it strangely.

Then there's Hanna-Barberra...

Regarding short cinema movies I like both, though WB artists and voice actors were much more radical. Disney tried to impose a universal animation style afterwards.

Regarding TV series, Disney were the best in the 80s and 90s.

Though looking back, I prefer the characters and style of UPA. Gay Purr-ee is so much better than Aristocats with that animation style.
One reason I coudnt stand Hanna Barbera shows, even as a kid, was that they borrowed that style and butchered it

What cartoons are popular in Europe nowadays? Specifically traditional animation in France, UK, or Germany.

I've heard great things about Spirou and Titeuf, though it is my understanding those are comics.

Yeah, I hardly ever seen Mickey Mouse etc. cartoons growing up. For a company so big and uses the mouse as their mascot he isn't featured hardly in TV or movies.

we basically all just watch Inuyasha 24/7. Our economy is in shambles, send help

One of the most popular cartoons was actually one from Czechoslovakia: Krtek (the Mole)

Chuck Jones had his moments but Bob McKimson and Bob Clampett kicked his ass as far as all of their respective bodies of work go.

Source: Over forty years of my life spent watching their output.

Man, it's really hard to pick a favourite out of the Looney Tunes theatrical shorts that McKimson & Clampett had directed. Buckaroo Bugs is when Bob was at his wildest, & you'd be hard pressed to find a funnier idiot than Red Hot Rider.

In celebration of YJ coming back, I re-watched The Spectacular Spider-Man. Damn, that show is fucking amazing. Its the definitive adaptation of Spider-Man for me, animated or not. They get it; every character from Gwen to Peter to MJ to Eddie are all portrayed amazingly well. The plot arcs work great, and you grow to care about all the characters (at least the ones you're supposed to care about), which is the sign of a great show, to me.

I'm sad it got cancelled. At the very least, YJ is coming back, so I'll have some glint of hope in the back of my heart this is as well.

Watched it again a few months ago it still pains me it didn't get more seasons such a good show, I wanted them to do carnage!

I've found more and more that I love cartoons that engage in overarching plots rather than stick to episodic formats. Spectacular Spiderman perfectly blended together the day to day shenanigans Peter Parker would find himself in with multiple narrative arcs that were strung perfectly.

On a sidenote if you're into overarching plots, you should REALLY check out Star vs. The Forces of Evil. The Season 2 midseason finale aired last night and it was insanely good.

It won't

I mean they quickly replaced it and Spider-man (recasting the voice actor after he recorded stuff for Earth's Mightiest Heroes) and are doing a new Spider-man cartoon next year. We'll be 2 cartoon series away... would be strange to go backwards

You could tell they were setting up a bunch of different villains. Sad it got cancelled before it came to fruition.

It's on my list. I'm interested cause it looks good, and the director is the same guy who worked on Green Lantern TAS. It'll probably be the next thing I watch.

Shhh. I want to believe dammit. It still ticks me off what Disney/Marvel did to this and EMH. Loeb needs to go, but that's never gonna happen. Spectacular Spider-man would be a step forwards, not backwards anyhow.

I know it's probably not coming back : /

How is Wabbit?

From what little I've seen, I've been half-and-half about it. I'll commend its attempt at going for simple "back to basics" shorts, but a lot of them feel...bland. At least give The Looney Tunes Show credit for trying new things.

The Looney Tunes franchise in general has been pretty aimless, the past few years. I know Space Jam 2 is on the way, but after that...?

I like to think that maybe, just maybe someone on Spider-Man: Homecoming will use Spectacular Spidey as inspiration. I mean Shocker's in it, maybe they could use the Enforcers as some quick baddies.

Electro's origin in Amazing Spider-Man 2 was based on Spectacular Spider-Man, so that may not necessarily be a good thing.

So Justice League Action is debuting on Cartoon Network on Dec. 16 with a 7:30 AM timeslot. It's DC Nation all over again.

...DC Nation. Waking up every saturday to watch Young Justice and the masterpiece that was Green Lantern: TAS. Seeing all the wild shorts too like Amethyst, Plastic Man, Grindhouse Wonder Woman, Thunder & Lightning, Batman of Shanghai. Three years later and I still miss all of it.

Simple question, what is an animated series/cartoon you are thankful for?

ALso happy Thanksgiving to Animation Gaf!
Adult Swim. They have their problems, but they've done so much good for western animation. From making more adult shows acceptable to rebooting shows like Futurama, Family Guy (as unfortunate as later seasons turned out), Samurai Jack, and Toonami.

Yeah, even just a subtle reference would be nice. I really just want them to nail Parker and others like Spectacular did, and Amazing or Riami Spiderman weren't able to, but we'll see how it ends up.

Plus they publish some really good games, too bad about..the racist stuff.

If by racism you mean the alt-right tv show, yeah... shit's not great. I refuse to give that show attention or money, but AS puts out so much good shit, I don't know if I could completely ignore the channel cause of that.
