I know it isn't recent but i just watch sinister and I wasn't really that impressed, the last horror movie I really enjoyed was descent, I had fun watching trick r treat, but I'm looking for something people here consider hard to sleep at night horror flicks that are fairly recent maybe i've missed some indie horror movies.

(not gore movies)

I can't fathom why people like The Descent.

Regardless, the last scary movies I've seen that I ENJOYED has got to be VHS 2 or Dark Skies. But I haven't seen a good one in awhile...The Conjuring was laughably bad.

Sinister was just awful.

VHS/VHS 2 have that sleazy 80s horror film style down, so I enjoy that franchise. But Insidious, while it tries, is mediocre and Paranormal Activity is just dreadful.

I'd say Evil Dead's remake was rather good.

The Woman in Black is the best horror movie I've seen recently. I thought it had some frightening scenes throughout - although it was a little too reliant on jump scares.

The Devil Inside and The Banshee Chapter, both on Netflix streaming, are quality too.

I liked a lot:

Martyrs
The Lords Of Salem
The Devil's Rejects
Pontypool
The Descent
Linkeroever
American Mary
Kairo (Japanese Pulse, not really recent but still among the best horror post-2000)
Excision
Drag Me To Hell
Kill List
Lake Mungo
Maniac (remake)
Rigor Mortis
Resolution
Sinister
Mama
The House Of The Devil
The Woman
Triangle
Insidious
You're Next
The Cabin In The Woods obviously, forgot about that
Some V/H/S episodes

Not really horror but considered as such by some:

Cold Fish (Sion Sono)
Lesson of the Evil (Takashi Miike)
Red State
Tucker & Dale Vs Evil

America doesn't do horror movies that well. The Japanese are much better at it. Check out a film called "Ju-on", was made in 2002.

It's a haunted house, ghost story but it's legitimately scary

The Conjuring got some good scares out of me. I didn't really enjoy Dark Skies until
the end when the greys appear and were after the older son instead of his little brother.
That kind of freaked me out.

I recommend The Pact (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2040560/?ref_=rvi_tt).
It's a run-of-the-mill ghost story, but it has one or two interesting ideas behind it. While it probably won't keep you up at night, it has decent atmosphere. It's pretty B-tier, but I think it's still worth trying out.

You should also definitely watch Cabin in the Woods even though it isn't a horror movie. It's still pretty great.

Don't waste your time with V/H/S or the sequel.

EDIT: You said you aren't looking for gore movies, so skip the Evil Dead remake. That movie is nothing but gore.

The Conjuring (way better than I expected)
Shutter (2004 Thai version, haven't seen the US remake)
The Borderlands (2013 haunting film)
Altered (2006, actually pretty funny too)
A Haunting in Connecticut
Mirrors (Remake)

Maybe:
Devil's Due
A Haunting in Connecticut 2 (which takes place in GEORGIA)
The Innkeepers (slow, end pays off some)

Avoid:
The Devil Inside
The Last Exorcism 2
The Apparition

Drag me to hell was the last good one i have seen

There seriously hasnt been anything good for horror movies recently. Mainly because they try and go for that PG-13 rating. THe found footage/paranormal shit is just tacky now.

I really really want to see the Texas chainsaw remaster that they did, but doubt it will be in theaters

I like Insidious, The Conguring was ok.

The Descent is amazing. V/H/S 1 and 2 each have one good short film each. Cabin in the Woods is a great movie-but it's a very different type of horror movie-very unconventional.

EDIT: Oh right-I did really like Drag Me To Hell too...

Wow, I looked up the lead in that film, Alison Lohman-she basically dropped of the face of the Earth after that movie:

I found Sinister quite decent.
[REC]^4 is about to be released this october, try the trilogy (specially the first two) and if you enjoy them you can try the fourth, watching the trailer looks so good.

:(

Insidious (1 and 2) and The Conjuring would be my suggestions.

Oculus was amazing. Was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Also another recent I enjoyed was In Fear.

For something a bit different, I suggest Lake Mungo. Of all the horror films I've seen in the past few years, this one has stayed with me the most. It's in the style of a documentary, looking back on the death of a teenage girl and events in the family's home shortly after.

Not a single jump scare, or any gore to speak of in the entire film. It's just a very haunting, atmospheric and realistically portrayed ghost story. It's literally kept me up at night.

V/H/S 2 was pretty interesting.

A very different formula than the super shitty, over-tired Sinister/Insidious/etc cheap scares.

Can't believe I forgot it! Lake Mungo is great.

Also, and I know it's a bit old now, but after watching it again Grave Encounters is very good and surprising.

Meet James Wan.
qt6uW2P.jpg

Director of such films as
Saw
Insidious
The Conjuring

(And also Insidious 2 but that was a contract thing he made at the same time as his real feature The Conjuring)

Also known as the best new horror director of the new century.

Follow his name, and you'll get your best recent horror films.

I actually liked Sinister. Atmosphere was really creepy and the ending was fucked up.

This is a good list. I recommend The Orphanage and REC (2 was good too, just not as good as the first).

Also, watch Stitches on Netflix.

Yeah, I enjoyed Grave Encounters quite a bit. I've read mixed things on GAF but I felt they pulled it off quite well. I like supernatural films that don't over-explain their premise. It's okay to keep stuff mysterious - that's part of what makes it scary!

The Conjuring and both Insidious films (especially Chapter 2, god damn that movie is fucking great) are excellent.

VHS and Cabin in the Woods are awesome.

I really liked Oculus too, it was pretty unique.

Let the Right One In (not the remake)
this too, except I thought the remake was almost equal to the original.

The Orphanage.

If that can be counted as recent.

I literally can't think of anything else though I thought the Conjuring was OK, even Woman in Black isn't terrible (though the play is much better). I didn't like Rec at all. Insidious is terrible

Sinister was just awful.

VHS 2 was pretty bad, especially compared to the first one. The situations were just kind of weak, and weren't convincing enough for what VHS tries to do. I was really disappointed, and I didn't even think the first VHS was great other than the first scene.

It's not even worth checking out as a curiosity even if you liked VHS.

The Paranormal Activity movies have their moments.

Grave Encounters hooked me with the Ghost Adventures mockumentary, but actually ended up being a good horror movie.

House of 1000 Corpses
The Devils Rejects (Not really horror though)
The Human Centipede
Hostel (I actually find the situation to be frighting)
