What are some of the best recent horror movies?

Drag me to Hell was alright until it went all hilarious with the comedy goatman and whatnot. Plus the running joke of hair being pulled out.

Agree with pretty much everything mentioned so far, so I'll just throw in a few:

The Ceremony: Hard as hell to find. It was on Netflix a while ago but now the only place seemingly you can get it is on iTunes. Very slow building one man show similar to House of the Devil. College kid ends up unknowingly starting a sinister ritual in his frat house. Will probably put you on edge if you live/are alone in your house.

The Shrine: This one is still on Netflix. Some investigative journalists follow the story of a young man disappearing in a small rural town. Unsettling and takes a turn I didn't expect personally.

Resolution: Still on Netflix. A guy heads to the cabin where his best friend is set on using as many substances as he can to commit suicide. Interesting set up that definitely goes places.

Splinter: A couple ends up at the mercy of another couple who car-jacks them. Both then end up at the mercy of a twisted sort of fungus. Pretty cool monster flick. I'm not a fan of mold or that kind of slow growing fungus thing so it does a number on me.

Already mentioned but the Banshee Chapter was recommended to me recently and I found it pretty awesome. I passed over it several times on Netflix and didn't even know it was supposed to be horror.

The Shrine was pretty interesting. I've been meaning to check out Splinter, but I'm trying to see if it will show up on Netflix.

Can someone please explain to me how in the hell is "Who's Next?" a good movie?!
It's your usual crappy predictable horror with terrible acting, or did I miss something?

It is pretty much a parody of modern horror with some great twists. To say its predictable... I don't get how anyone could think that. The acting makes sense when you realize what you're watching.

You're Next is a great recommendation, Splinter is really good as well. I loved Dead Silence but I'm definitely an outlier there. I thought both Grave Encounters movies were pretty great even though part 2 was pretty goofy at times and one scene in particular was depressingly dark.

One thing I notice with many newer horror movies is that they kinda lack a sense of dread. The movie with the biggest amount of that feeling for me was The Devils Rejects. Shit was fucked up. Rob Zombie is really good at that, and its one of the most important aspects in horror.

The Conjuring was excellent.
The Descent was really good at a primal level.
Who's Next wasn't terrible, though the "comedy" falls flat if you ask me.

Parody? It doesn't look like that at all. Like I said, it's the regular predictable bad horror movie that you see a dozen of which every year, only this one is getting more praise

It was so obvious that one of the family members is in on the 'invasion', and the fact that "Zee" was shady-looking gave it right away

V/H/S, Insidious, Dead Silence, and You're Next are good picks I think too.

I really, really liked Absentia (and I think that it was recommended in a similar GAF thread). The original poster mentioned that the cover is goofy and could be a turn off, but I'm glad that I checked it out. The director went on to make Oculus, which I'm pretty excited to see when it hits DVD.

Throw me in the check out VHS and VHS2 camps. They are uneven, but the good shorts are pretty good. I wouldn't marathon them though, I can only take that style for so long, and I could see why someone wouldn't finish them if watching it for 3 straight hours.

Sinister was alright, but I doubt it will stick with you. I completely forgot what that movie was the first couple of times it was posted in this thread, but it was alright.

Oculus was also ok. Didn't quite do it for me though. Think it is because any time (mild spoiler)
a mirror/painting controls/manipulates somebody
I think it is Vigo the Carpathian. Caused me to laugh too much.

The Babadook

Haven't seen it but it has nice reviews and the trailer looks scary.

Two recommendations that actually look interesting, and neither are anywhere to be found streaming online.

+1000

Lake Mungo is one of my favorite "horror" movies - in quotes because of all the explanations above, which I agree with (admittedly I do like the found footage variety of horror). Unfortunately I don't think Lake Mungo is on Netflix instant watch any more.

Lake Mungo gets a lot of thing right about horror movies that most do wrong. Jump scares are more obnoxious than scary for me, and I'm a huge fan of horror movies that have little to none at all (and Lake Mungo does have one itself). Really bummed that there's not much else like Lake Mungo in the world, it's a dreadfully sad and horrifying movie. I'm have a feeling that another great Australian horror movie could be this thing called The Snowtown Murders, which is recommended to me often.

I'll recommend a few things that I'd consider to be horror movies, although they may not have the typical jump scares and gore that you might be looking for:

Enemy
Cheap Thrills (free with Amazon Prime)
Sightseers
The Killer Inside Me - I don't think I'd enjoy watching this a second time, like Martyrs or Human centipede, but it stuck with me

I saw sinister in a packed cinema and it was greeted with open laughter by the entire crowd
especially when the CGI zombie children started dancing about the house
. I kind of like it though (maybe from how funny that experience was)

The REC films are pretty good and I quite liked insidious

There doesn't seem to be that many good horrors these days. Its a shame. Kill list is a masterpiece of modern horror but theres not much else. Have you seen lake mungo OP. Thats a pretty decent film with one particularly creepy scene. Any of the french extreme films are really good. Maryrs, inside and switchblade romance are excellent. I'm not into the ghost train type of horrors like the conjuring or sinister. They're not scary in the slightest. When I watch a horror film I want it to be bleak and disturbing and terrifying. Films that leave you completely emotionally drained like you've been punched in the face multiple times. Thats horror to me.

you could try 'The Tunnel'
a little known Australian horror movie
I think it's one of those 'you either love if or hate it' movies, but it gave me the creeps

I got spooked to silly levels by Sinister, me and my mate went to watch it at the cinema and it stayed with me for days afterwards.

I hated going up stairs with the lights off with only the light from my phone to light the way.
For reference, I leave the landing lights off as when I go to bed my GF/kids are in bed.

I have on my list of horrors to watch:

The Ouija Experiment
The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh
The Tunnel
The Shrine
Grave Encounters

i really enjoyed both Insidious. i also really liked the last paranormal activity. it was suprisingly good.

i also really liked cabin in the woods and the conjuring.

Yup, felt like pretty standard fair. Plot line about
the insider was so obvious, even the second insider was clear as day light.

Saw Resolution at your request on Netflix last night, was not disappointed! One of the more unique concepts I've seen in a horror movie for awhile. The Shrine was also pretty cool, did not see that twist coming!

Adding another vote for Dark Skies.

I thought it was really scary.

I feel it was really well-paced, the threat was very tangible and I was disturbed at a lot of it. I thought the design for the Aliens themselves was terrifying.

Did anyone feel like it had a lot in common with Signs - almost forcefully so? As if the director said "I can do that better". And
arguably/almost
did?

Horror Films I've enjoyed.

Cabin in the Woods
Drag me to Hell
Rec
The Orphanage
The Crazies (2010)
30 Days of Night
The Ring

I recall enjoying Mama last year. Haven't seen it since, but I thought the creature was pretty freaky looking and I actually found myself pretty invested in the story.

I took issue with the IQ of the protagonists, in how they basically made a long series of very dumb decisions; it was frustrating. But on the whole I had fun with it as well. The scene at the actual shrine was so damn creepy.

The WORST horror movies that are all over this thread are:
Cabin in the Woods
Sinister
Mama
....
The Conjuring is okay at best.

All of the movies listed above are generally well received for people who do not actually like horror. But I'd rather watch paint dry.

Some fun newer horror movies:
Jug Face (Good ol' bumkin cult horror)
13 Sins (formulaic horror that actually works)
Escape from Tomorrow (more of a weird thriller)
We Are Who We Are (family affair)
America Horror Story (only season 2)
The Innkeepers (supernatural)
The Host (monster movie)
John Dies at the End (fun horror)
.

For crazy intense horror:
Martyrs
Frontiere(s)
A Serbian Film
The Seasoning House

There are a lot more than this (these are all on Netflix instant streaming). But it should be a good start...

I'm not sure if everyone would consider it a horror film, but I found The Act of Killing to be pretty unsettling.

Don't watch Innkeepers. One of the most boring supernatural movies in a long time. Basically nothing happens. Unless you like watching two people sitting around a lot.

Umm yes. I was actually at the premiere of this and went to the Q&A with Josh Oppenhiemer and Werner Herzor. This documentary is more frightening than any horror could attempt to be. Why? Because it's real.

The WORST
The Conjuring is okay at best.

..

THANK GOD I AM NOT ALONE.

I really disliked the Conjuring, and I feel like I am the only one with that opinion.

I actually think the innkeepers was the scariest movie I saw last year.

I don't think I'll ever understand the love for Martyrs. It's just the usual torture porn with some sophomoric philosophical bullshit thrown in to make it seem deep. I'd take The Loved Ones over Martyrs any day. At least it doesn't take itself seriously or pretend to be something it isn't.

The Loved Ones is pretty good, too. I think Martyrs is the gold standard for torture porn, but yes, it is just that. There's some really beautiful imagery and decent acting. I get what you mean about the philosophical aspects- the particular theme of boredom/privilege is a little overdone, although it didn't seem too self indulgent to me. All in all, I love it. Did you like Mum and Dad? I thought it was another nice addition to the genre...

I haven't seen that one. I'll have to check it out.

-Drag Me To Hell, exemplifies why Sam Raimi is a master of horror

-The Descent, very spooky

-Mama, is very enjoyable and has IMO some very scary scenes

-The Conjuring, it isn't amazing but it does the American ghost story brand of horror very well

-You're Next, seems IMO like a very good homage to 70s masked killer horror films
