What are some of the best recent horror movies?

Is that good? On my short list.

Seen most of these recommendations. Grave Encounters was fun, The Tunnel has some good moments. Most are disappointing. REC 2 was a huge letdown and the Paranormal Activity series has slipped into nonsense.

Oculus comes out on DVD soon, looking forward to that.

Adding another vote for Dark Skies.

Did anyone feel like it had a lot in common with Signs - almost forcefully so? As if the director said "I can do that better". And
arguably/almost
did?

Not even almost, but yes, there were definitely some mirrored elements especially the family dinner before the final round. It doesn't hold a candle to Signs' writing, acting, character development and emotion though.

But yeah, I also really liked this one because it was atmospheric, creepy and tense, and it wasn't about rushing through anything and took its time during the night sequences. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it and how much legitimately had me freaked out.

Here are some recent to recent-ish horror films that I really enjoyed:

You're Next
Kill List
The Conjuring
The Descent
REC
REC 2
The Orphanage
A Tale of Two Sisters
House of the Devil
V/H/S 2 (if only for the Gareth Evans segment)

It's surprisingly good. Really one of the only recent horror movies I've enjoyed outside of Oculus, and it's /far/ better than Oculus. Borderlands is essentially the inverse of Oculus; mostly solid with an incredible final act.

Lovely Molly (2011)
Evil presence, possession, lasting impression on the viewer. Loved her slow descent into no return. Subtle but impactful.

The Awakening (2011)
Haunted boarding school, suspense and psychological. I liked the overall aesthetic of this film, reminded me a bit of The Others.

The Collection (2012)
Freaking amazing movie. Maybe more gory than you'd like, but I seriously think this movie rocks. Serial killer, close quarters, unsettling and surprising.

The Conspiracy (2012)
A little slow at first and not entirely believable as a "documentary", this film about government conspiracy theories has good pacing, tension, and an interesting ending.

I agree with everyone who suggested Banshee Chapter.

Byzantium (2013)
Interview with the Vampire is my favorite movie ever, so when I heard Neil Jordan had a new film I was excited. Supernatural drama more so than true horror, but has some great scenes of terror and the movie looks and sounds beautiful. Great acting here, too.

Echoing Kill List. It's on Netflix and I chose it randomly, very good on all counts. Beautiful cinematography, a definite slow burner as to the actual horror aspects (reminded me of House of the Devil in that regard), English hitmen that have no idea what's really going on with their new client/contracts. Witchcraft themes. Great performance by Michael Smiley (was in world's end and Shaun of the dead). Creepy watch for sure.

Just watched Afflicted and It was pretty solid. Don't read any of the plot previews or spoilers and it makes for a nice deviation from the found footage genre.

I would like to -1 this recommendation, this movie, Inside, and Eden Lake soured my trust of Horror GAF. All three are boring and shoddily executed and left me saying "That's it? Really? Fucking should've watched something else."

Drag Me To Hell
Also terrible, unlikable, not funny or scary or clever.

The Killer Inside Me
Now that's a horrifying little film. The anti-American Psycho.

I nominate Let the Right One In, REC, and Piranha. Surprisingly enough, the remake of The Crazies wasn't actually too bad either by being saved by its cast. Loses its way in the last third but eh, at least you probably don't see it coming.

THANK GOD I AM NOT ALONE.

I really disliked the Conjuring, and I feel like I am the only one with that opinion.

Don't worry, I'm here. Conjuring was boring and predictable.
(insidious also).

I would recommend the loved ones also.
You're next is not mindblowing but do what it intends with efficiency, it's fun.

Watched House of the Devil over the weekend based on the hype in this thread, and my god, it is boring...and there's almost no payoff.

I loved the cast, the cinematography and the music, but the majority of the movie is watching a babysitter kill time in an empty house. She listens to headphones, snoops around, orders and eats a pizza...I know the point is to build suspense but this movie was all style and no substance. I was hoping for so much more.

6.5/10

I also watched The Possession (2012) - it was a cheesy almost laughable horror flick with decent pacing and special effects. The script was horrible but the lead, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, gave a more-than-solid performance which kept me interested.

7.5/10

A horror movie I did enjoy recently was The Conjuring (2013). It was a fun story, with a lot of special effects and creep-outs, but the my favorite aspect was the casting of the two leads played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. Definitely not a life-changing horror film but a good popcorn flick to watch with your significant other.

8.5/10

It's pretty bad. I didn't get the appeal at all. It was drawn out and had slow burn that went toward a super brief and even cliche climax with nothing scary about it.

OHHHH
SATAN WORSHIPPERS

Watched it (The Borderlands) over the weekend, really good! I kinda hated the final 30 seconds of it, but otherwise it was worth watching.

I have to assume they
inexplicably crawled into the stomach of some giant underground pagan demon
which would have been fine if it was hinted at or teased earlier in some way, as is it just felt random and kind of odd. But maybe no more than how Grave Encounters or The Tunnel, two similar found footage films also ended. OK, maybe a little weirder and more random.

It reminded me of Let the Right One In.

Tons of GAF buzz, and a beautiful looking movie, but consistently boring and uneventful, with 100% obnoxious characters filling up the story.

Wow, this looks really cool!
Any word on when it will be released on Blu-Ray/Netflix/etc.??

I think it releases in US theaters in December 2014 so probably not on Blu-Ray/Netflix for a while. Disappointing I know because I've been hyped for this one as well and it has been released in Australia for a while now.

Also for those who like Conjuring (myself included), Anabelle looks good and releases this October.

Not seeing much mention of Sinister in here.

I watched it over the weekend and I was not particularly impressed.

Where in the world are people buying these flashlights and lamps that make **some** light but not enough to see an inch outside of the light it casts>? This movie was made around the concept that you should go stock up on 100watt lightbulbs and fresh batteries.

Oh, and I loved The Conjuring. I thought it was really terrifying actually. "It's standing... right... next to you...."

Yeah The Conjuring is the most recent one I've seen that I genuinely liked. Horror movies are so routine now there really isn't anything new. Conjuring isn't really new either but it had high production. I think watching it with the volume cranked up enhances the experience too. It's pretty crazy at the end with some loud volume.

People like Insidious 1 & 2 because they have more story than most horror films. I liked them well enough, but there's just something lacking for me. I really can't put my finger on it. I guess the next Insidious is supposed to be a prequel which is kind of a letdown because the end of 2 made you want to find out what that lady saw.

No Wilson, no sale.

just kidding, I will definitely watch this, but I am way more pumped for Conjuring 2.

Didn't know there was going to be a Conjuring 2. Totes!

Can someone please explain to me how in the hell is "Who's Next?" a good movie?!
It's your usual crappy predictable horror with terrible acting, or did I miss something?

I feel like I would have enjoyed it more had it not been so hyped. I thought it was refreshing that the female was a strong and intelligent lead though.

That's how I interpreted it as well. It is kinda-sorta teased earlier in a roundabout way; there's the backstory of the guy "serving a new master," obviously, and then the camera man talking about Christians worshiping the "great what if" while pagans worship things that are real, etc. So nothing actually directly indicating that there is a giant demon residing underneath the church, but at the very least some vague foreshadowing. Definitely could have been done better though.

By the way, if anyone's looking for some just straight-up weird as fuck horror movies, I recommend I Can See You.

I watched The Innkeepers tonight. The bolded is not hyperbole.

I was pretty disappointed with The Innkeepers too. I thought the main girl was way too cute, which made the scare scenes just funny with her flailing her arms about like a little girl and her cute shrieks.

I seem to be in a minority, but I found Lake Mungo, Session 9, and Noroi extremely boring. Same with The Innkeepers. I get that they are slow build-up movies, but they pretty much build up to nothing.

The last scene in Lake Mungo was kind of haunting; imagining something like that happening to you. But it would have worked much better as a Twilight Zone episode, not a feature-length movie.

I personally love a good slow building movie. Lovely Molly was one of my favorites from the last few years.

Also I think Antichrist is the best horror movie in the past decade. Although I am mostly alone on that I think.

It's up there for me too. Lars Von Trier knows how to create that sense of near constant dread and foreboding. Those scenes
with the hypnosis sessions with her walking through the forest, meeting the animals etc are terrifying
. Guy knows how to burrow his stories into your subconscious. The cinematography was great, and that low rumble ambient music going on throughout makes it a lot creepier. Lynch uses that to great effect in his movies, wish more filmmakers paid more attention to the music element. Anything bombastic or in your face kills it for me, minimalist or ambient is best. Take a look at Exorcist for example, very little music going on especially during the possession scenes, makes it way scarier. That theme though...

Just watched Occulus the other day. it was alright. it kinda lost its way midway through the movie, but it was alright.

its not a movie but P.T. demo on PS4 is by far the scariest thing I've seen in a while.
