What are the hardest sports losses you've ever had to witness?

I think this is appropriate after my Yankees spit the bit this past week. For the record I'm a Yanks/Giants/Rangers/Knicks fan (guess where I live):

1. Super Bowl XXXV: Ravens 34, Giants 7 - A year before I started watching football the G Men won their last championship, so I was really looking forward to it, and they just did nothing. Hurt a lot.

2. 1994 NBA Championship: Rockets 4, Knicks 3 - John ****ing Starks. All my friends were Bulls fans, it was rough.

3. Jan 5, 2003: 49ers 39, Giants 38 - Biggest collapse in NFL playoff history. Thanks to our shity prevent defense and special teams from hell. And the ref MISSED the cal at the end of the game. Brutal.

4. Yesterday: Red Sox 4, Yanks 3 - Its one thing to lose an ALCS. It's another to blow a 3-0 series lead. And it's still another to LOSE TO THE MFing RED SOX. I'm bitter.

5. October 1995: Mariners 3, Yankees 2 - It was before the Yanks won anything, and they were up 2-0, really should have won that series.

So anyway, everyone post their worst sports moments!

Game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals between the Vancouver Canucks and NY Rangers. Made all the worse by Nathan Lafayette ringing the puck off the post a few minutes before the final whistle - that would have been the game tying goal. Without the extra day's rest between Game 6 and 7, there's no way the Rangers would have been able to pull it off...the Canucks were running them out of the building. Goddamn it.

Just typing this out is pissing me off.

8th inning meltdown of the Cubbies last year in the NLCS. I'm am no big fan of the Cubs (I hate their fans) but even that was a tough one to take.

Not really a game loss, but still a saddening event.

Montreal Expos were hurting in the 90's, and out of nowhere, they start having a great season. They were kicking ass! They were on their way to the World SERI-...ohh... strike?

The hardest loss I've ever watched were the Yankees loss yesterday, and the Giants' collapse in Game 6 of the 2002 World Series.

I'm not a fan of either team (fan of the Angels), but it looked downright painful for fans of those teams.

Saints playoffs 'possible' launch last year where they made one of the greatest 4-second remaining plays of all time only to have the kicker miss the extra point. Un-fucking-believable and incredibly disappointing.

Well, since I'm a pretty young sports fan (I'm 16), I only have two:

2) Super Bowl XXXVIII - New England 32, Carolina 29
I was so hyped for this game, and I was beside myself when Ricky Proehl scored the the tying touchdown. Then I watched in horror as John Kasay muffed the ensuing kickoff out of bounds with 68-69 seconds left, putting the Patriots on their own 40 and with just enough time for the Patriots. Carolina actually played great defense and had the Patriots on their own 43 with a 3rd-and-long situation. But then the secondary broke down and gave up a huge 23-yard completion. With 0:09 to go, Vinateri kicked it through the uprights and I mourned the loss. It really sucks when the team you've followed for a while (In my case, 3 years [not long by any means, but I did go through that 1-15 season...ugh]) finally gets its chance and falls just short. At least I haven't been a Boston fan for long (since last year; it must've sucked balls for the team and its fans to go through the all the shit they've been through).

1) George Shinn moves the Charlotte Hornets to New Orleans
Not a game loss, but a franchise loss. I don't even remember the whole thing; it's all a blur now. I remember holding out hope that somehow the city and Shinn could work out a deal to keep the Hornets here. I literally cried the day I heard they were packing up and moving out of town. All those years and those great players: Alonzo Mourning, Larry Johnson, Mugsy Bogues, Baron Davis, Jamal Mashburn, etc. I was at the last home game, and man, it was one of the most emotional moments of my life. The new franchise Bobcats soften the blow, but (at least in my mind), they will never replace the Charlotte Hornets.

Oh yeah, there's also COUNTLESS Tar Heels losses that I can't even mention because of the magnitude of how many there are. One in particular that I remembered was a Final Four loss to Stanford. I was so pissed off that I didn't eat the entire day. Hopefully this is the Year of the Heels.

Watching the All Blacks clearly being the best at rugby in the world, and then caving under the enormous pressure and expectation in a semi final round of the world cup. Every 4th year.

The last game in veteran stadium, Bucs over Eagles in the nfc championship after we had knocked them out of the playoffs and beaten them in the regular season the past 2 years. We got off to a great start with a huge return and a Duce td run then it all went to crap. They went on to get a blowout win in the superbowl.

Canada losing to the Czech Republic on shootouts at the 98 Olympics (hockey).

Also, technically a "loss", I watched Greg Moore crash his indy car and die. That kinda sucked, considering he was my favorite driver at the time.

That is my most memorable/favorite sports moment ever. I'm a Mariners fan. Seeing Lou bring in Randy Johnson from the bull pen... Edgar driving in Griffey to win it... sweetness.

Flames not winning game 6 of the NHL finals. We had the chance to put that game away. Game went into overtime and then Tampa get's a quick goal to take it back to Florida.
The team had worked so hard all playoffs. The city was soooo crazy all through the playoffs.
The "Sea of Red" is not fake like in other cities. We actually buy our own red shirts. :lol Nice try with that Tampa.
But game 7 was a moot point we played flat until the end of the third quarter and the game was already done by then.

Game 6 was tough. We had that series.

I have quite a few, but the one that I will always remember:

Giants vs Anaheim Angels: World Series in 2002

We had a (3-2) lead going into the 6th game. It was 5-0 in the bottom of the 7th and we gave up three runs that inning. We ended up losing that game. The next game the angels won 4-1. I cried that day :\

another couple would be those NFC Championship games that niners made a couple years ago vs the Green Bay Packers. They just kept beating us, and I think if we had made one from one of those two years, we could've had a better chance at beating Denver then Green Bay ever did.

1993 NCAA Basketball final game, watching the Michigan Wolverines tank, and then have Chris Weber call a time out when they didn't have any left.

THAT was painful.

Wahahah! Too bad Calgary didn't realize there was a fourth quarter in hockey!

superbowl 36. st louis rams vs new england patriots.

Pats were 14 point dogs, there's no way they should have won that game. But they had the refs in their pocket. We dominated their offense even still, and warner led the comeback to tie it up. only to lose at the last second due to the "prevent" defense. i believe the nfl wanted the patriots to win because of 9/11 and all, just look at the snow bowl game vs the raiders earlier in the playoffs.

3. Chicago Bulls vs. Orlando Magic, game 6, 1995 playoffs. Michael Jordan having returned 2 months before I expected to bring us to the promised land right away but he wasn't MJ again yet. Crushing defeat with the steal by Nick Anderson and such. I remember the next season wondering if MJ would be the same and didnt even have to question that more than a day. 72 - 10 season made up for it.

2. Bears vs. Eagles, 2001 playoffs - Following a 13-3 miracle season we hadn't lost to any team except for the Packers since week 1. Such high hopes. Then they were crushed with the realization of "oh yeah, Jim Miller and Shane Mathews are our best qb options".

1. Cubs vs Marlins, game 6 and 7 - Collapsed from up 3 games to 1. Especially here when they had Prior on the mound. And game 7 was like running around after being beheaded but oddly somehow at certain moments I thought I'd live.

Portland Trailblazers losing Game 6 (and the series) of the 1992 NBA finals to the Chicago Bulls after being screwed out of their 18 point lead by the refs.

Screw the bulls !!!!!!!!!

1998 - Vikings vs Falcons for NFC title. The season the Vikes set the NFL record for most points in a season. Gary Anderson hadn't missed a field goal all season, they're playing in the Metrodome (no wind) and all he needs is a 30 yard field goal to win and he fucking shanks it!!!!!

---edit---
now I'm pissed off. GOD-DAMNED FUCKIN FALCONS!!!!

I was literally on my feet and screaming at the television for Garret Anderson to run home. Dusty shouldn't have given the game ball in the 7th. I think it jinxed 'em.

Game 5 was particularly painful to watch. 16-4. Ouch. I thought that was the end at that point.

Rudy T not calling a timeout as the Jazz scored like 10 points in a row in the final 2 mintues to knock the Rockets out of the playoffs in the Western Conference finals...in 96 I believe. What a fucking moron. It was gonna be Barkley, Drexler, Olajuwon vs. Rodman, Jordan, Pippen.

Fucking Rudy T is the worst coach ever.

1. Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS when the Red Sox lost to the yankees. I was depressed for weeks. There is other Red Sox games that have hurt but that was the hardest becuase the game was "won"

2. Also for some reason in junior high I used to love the Phoenix suns when they had Barkley,KJ etc... When they lost to the Bulls in 94 I was pretty upset. Especially since all my friends liked the bulls.

Lakers losing to the Spurs in 2003. Unlike the Pistons this year, the Spurs were not just flat-out better and LA should have had that series...

florida st losing to the fucking miami hurricanes in early september 2004. seminoles had dominated the ENTIRE FUCKING GAME, even with the usual chris rix assorted brand of fuck ups, i.e. throwing off the back foot and sideways, fumbling snaps, throwing into triple coverage.

2 minutes to go... WE HAD THE GAME. FINALLY, THOSE ARROGANT, COCKY HURRICANES WOULD BE DEALT WITH...

then, the comeback, and OT COLLAPSE.

never been more disappointed.

The Mets losing Game 6 of the 1999 NLCS to the Braves was probably the worst sports loss for me. Watching the Yankees win the World Series at Shea Stadium was pretty bad too.

My number 1.

What made it worse was talking shit the whole time before the game with FMT, then during the game... brutal.

#2 was the 1998 playoff game against the Vikings. It's actually a madden moment in the CE version of Madden 2005. They came back from what, 17 points down to win? All Chris Calloway had to do was FALL ON THE BALL. But no. He tried to run with it. WHY. WHY GOD WHY!?

*weeps* Yeah, that's definitely it for me too. As far as watching live, either the Jets losing to the fucking red wings in game 5 of a winnable series in '95 (the last game of the Jets... gah) or the gold medal game of the '99 World Juniors when the Russians beat a hugely likable but not-quite-as-skilled Team Canada in an OT as heartbreaking as anything I've ever seen. Thinking about Luongo bent over at the blue line crying still gives me a lump in the throat. :(
r2.jpg

The Flames losing game 7 of the Cup finals last year was tough, but really it was such a shocking run that half an hour after the game I wasn't even that upset anymore. The only thing that really kills me about that was losing game 6 in OT when up 3-2 in the series.

Even though I'm a Bama fan..... the hardest loss would be Alabama loses to Tennessee last year. 5 overtimes!

Well, that sums it up.

I take it you would be upset at the large framed image of the final buzzer going off in Game 7 signed by Brian Leetch, Mike Richter, and Mark Messier that I have hanging on my bedroom wall, huh?

"Edge stole Big Ben's helmet"
I'm a Steelers/Pirates/Penguins/Penn State fan.

1. 1992 NLCS. Braves vs. Pirates. Francisco fucking Cabrera and Sid Bream, Barry Bonds can't throw for shit. I was 8 years old sitting on my parents bed watching it, and I cried that night because the whole team got broken up the next year.

2. Super Bowl XXX. Neil O'Donnel to Larry Brown for 2 TD's. Steelers were driving for the go ahead score at 20-17 on the second one. I will never forgive him for that.

3. 1993 NHL Playoffs. Penguins vs. Islanders. Tom Barrasso lets a goal in from the blue line for the Islanders to win the series. Pens had the best team in the league and were going for the 3-peat, that SUCKED.

4. 1994, 1997, 2001 AFC Championship games. All Steelers chokes at home... '94 was probably the worst, because the Chargers really weren't very good, and the Broncos in '97 and Pats in '01 at least won it all.

5. 1996 Penguins-Panthers. The Panthers and their damn sewer rat bullshit beat a stacked Pens team to go to the NHL finals. FUCK.

6. 2002 Penn State-Iowa. PSU battles back in the final 10 minutes from 21 down to send it to OT, then the refs totally fuck us in OT and we lose the game. This was the game JoePa grabbed the ref and yelled at him, for two complete bullshit calls on a caught pass for us that was called incomplete and an incomplete pass for them that was called complete. The Michigan loss later in the season sealed the deal for me, as Tony Johnson's foot was BLATANTLY in bounds, at least a foot, and he got called out. We lost in OT. I hate the Big Ten.

The Yanks' loss last night was pretty bad, but I'm pretty much over it now. Surprisingly, the Yanks' loss in Game 6 to the Marlins last year bothered me a little more. But the absolute worst loss I've ever had to witness was the Bills' in Super Bowl XXV. Now, sports losses aren't that big of a deal to me. But when I was a kid, damn it hurt. I don't know a single Bills fan my age who didn't cry when they lost that shit in 1991. Fuck you, Norwood!

That one year that the Trailblazers were gonna make the finals, but somehow Magic Johnson got the ball and just tossed it downcourt where no one was standing, so time would run out... they had enough time left for someone to bust a three or draw a foul or something.

Stupid Magic...
