Hotel Lights, which is Darren Jessee's (the drummer from Ben Folds Five) new band, which is very much alternative pop rock, if you want to call it that. It's a fantastic, fantastic debut album and you can even listen to 4 tracks off the CD here: http://hotellights.net/music.html. If you're looking for new music, I highly recommend them.

Gruff Rhys Yr Atal Genhedlaeth, which rules so much it's incredible. If you like Mwng, you'll like this a lot. If you like extremely catchy, stupidly-simple sing-along music you can't understand a word of, you'll love it.

I'm getting really anxious to hear what the new SFA album is going to be all about.

Singer-songwriter. He plays the cello (or is that a violin?). Check out the soing "Wolf Song." It's a bit lo-fi, so I'm not sure if you'd like it, but yeah.

Electro-folk.

I learned about him from Hota in the last music thread and fell in love. How could you possibly be calling us late when there are threads about peoples' first listens to Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, and the Pixies in the first two pages? His first album came out in 2003, and the current version of Lycanthropy came out last year.

I'm not sure. I haven't seen a tracklist for the album yet, though it is supposedly "released." I haven't heard that track, I should probably check it out, 'cos I do love me some Afro Finger.

And a public service announcement: That new M. Ward album fucking rules.

Oh yes yes yes.

Sadly, it doesn't have 3 or so of the David Bowie covers by Seu Jorge or the Sigur Ros song. But it's still the best soundtrack ever.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here.

B00004TZZO.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

1. Powerpuff Girls (Main Theme)
2. Devo - Go Monkey Go
3. Frank Black - Pray For The Girls
4. The Apples in Stereo - Signal In The Sky (Let's Go)
5. Optiganally Yours - Walk & Chew Gum
6. Shonen Knife - Buttercup (I'm A Super Girl)
7. Komeda - B.L.O.S.S.O.M.
8. Dressy Bessy - Bubbles
9. Bis - Fight the Power
10. The Sugarplastic - Don't Look Down
11. Cornelius - The Fight
12. The Bill Doss - Friends Win
13. Bis - The Powerpuff Girls (End Theme)

The OY song is about the greatest thing ever, and it completely sold me on OY, prompting me to order both their albums, and subsequently make me the biggest Absolutely Kosher Records whore ever. Yeah, all the songs are about the Powerpuff Girls (in fact, the album is kind of like an episode, telling a story and all that), but holy fucking shit, they're all soooooooo good. This is the best soundtrack, no, the best compilation ever, in my honest to god opinion. Find it.

Yeah, dude! I was a big bis/Shonen Knife fan when it came out, so I couldn't not get it. Like, all the bands on it are really good, and it's a HUGE influence (as embarassing as that very well may be) on what I listen to today (Dressy Bessy, OY, and Apples, especially). It's seriously, seriously really good, and I try to recommend it to everyone I know who digs indiepop at all, because it's a pretty much perfect disc.

I don't concede, but that really is amazing! And so misplaced, with all of the bands! It's like the Spongebob Squarepants Movie soundtrack all over again!

hooded pitohui: I like to ask this question whenever I see any sort of ska posted at any time in any forum: Have you heard/Do you like Streetlight Manifesto? If you haven't, I suggest getting Everything Goes Numb, their only cd (not for long!) ASAP- it's the best punk-ska album ever crafted.

Also- do you like MMB older stuff or their newer stuff better? Cause I'm leaning towards their older stuff.

Jim, yeah, I'm definitely more into the BossTones' older stuff. My cousin exposed me to them in 95, but I'm kind of ashamed to say that they (and a little bit of Aquabats) are the only ska I listen to. I've been looking for something new though, so I'll probably end up picking up some Streetlight Manifesto stuff next time I'm out if it really is that good.

If you're looking for some new stuff, also look up Five Iron Frenzy's final album The End Is Here. It's a Christian Rock CD, but there's no real praise songs or anything like that. It's just.. clean, I guess. But still, a fucking AMAZING ska album.

Also, check out anything by Hepcat and try to chase down The Toasters - Don't Let the Bastards Grind You Down. Of course, the obligatory Reel Big Fish - Turn the Radio Off and Less Than Jake - Losing Streak. Also, if you're into Japanese stuff (I see Pillows :) ) there's a compilation called Skamikaze! 2 that's very very good.

If you're interested in clips or whatnot of any of this, send me a PM and we'll talk. :D

I appreciate Frank Black, and everything, but that goddamn Optiganally Yours song is like, the best thing ever. Ohhhhh Rob Crow, why won't you be my wife, and why won't you hurry up and record more OY material with Pea!?!?!?!?! I need my fix.

StarPower: FYI, "Paris Hilton," and "We Love Guys Named Luke" are both on the new Mu album. It's called Out of Breach.

I remember hearing that Apples in Stereo song on Cartoon Network a few years back. Doesn't the chorus have something to do with little girls coming out to play? The guy's voice mixed with the chorus freaked me out.

Yeah, the song is about the girls out playing with their friends, when they see the PPG, wait for it, "Signal in the Sky." It's pretty innocent, shit, most of the Apples' stuff is, but I can definitely see why you'd be creeped out. Robert has a pretty strange voice.

I've been meaning to pick up the Ring Around the World DVD for quite some time, is it worth it? I've also been meaning to pick up Fuzzy Logic but that's neither here nor there.
