Because they aren't mainstream or even considered pop.

They aren't considered pop artists. That doesn't change that fact that some of their songs could be considered pop songs. I still maintain that "One More Time" could apply.

Yeah, do we mean Pop as in popular radio singles, or Pop as in the musical genre? I absolutely love pop, but I don't listen to the radio at all.

What makes a song "pop", besides if they happen to play it on pop radio? Any popular song is pop?

My Love and Mr. Brightside is good stuff. So is Disturbia. Good times!

who knows, it's always been vague but it's something you can touch and feel. You know a pop song when you hear it.

But if you wanna go hard definition popular should suffice and perhaps songs designed for popular consumption if you wanna get all snooty about it.

I'll just stick to singles, otherwise it'd essentially be my Queen B Top 10, and I'll save that for another day.

  1. Britney Spears - Gimme More (2007)
  2. Britney Spears - Everytime (2003)
  3. Backstreet Boys - The Call (2000)
  4. Britney Spears - Womanizer (2008)
  5. Nelly Furtado - Maneater (2006)
  6. Scooch - For Sure (2000)
  7. Lady Gaga - Poker Face (2008)
  8. Britney Spears - Lucky (2000)
  9. E-Type - True Believer (2007)
  10. Blur - Good Song (2003)

Tough list to make...this has been an awesome, unforgettable decade in pop music.

Never change.

And you don't like Toxic? what the fuck does anybody like Toxic? That was like the best song ever.

And Nelly Furtado's first album was real genius. What is up with people and her cheezy ass second album.

Oh I LOVE Toxic, but she's released quite a few songs that I like more.

Not a knock against Toxic at all, it's just more a testament to the quality of the catalog.

I like Toxic, but only because it gives me the opportunity to sing-along in an off-key manner with mistaken lyrics.

I don't even like boobs all that much, but singing "with my titties to your lips.." is great stuff.

1. Madonna- Hung Up (That shit was on my head for 6 months)
2.- Kelly Clarkson- Since You Been Gone
3.- Robyn- With Every heartbeat (in fact almost the whole Robyn album is pop perfection)
4.- Taylor Swift- Love Story <3 <3 <3
5.- Britney Spears- Piece of Me
6.- Avril Lavigne- Girlfriend
7.- Just Dance- Lady GaGa
8.- Britney Spears- Womanizer
9.- Kylie Minogue- Love at first sight
10.- BSB- I want it that way

Its been a great decade for pop music!

shit! there's too many songs I forgot, I mean "Mr Brightside", "Rock Your Body", "We Belog Together", "The Fear", "Viva la Vida" are all amazing.

How could I have forgotten Kylie?

EDIT: And Daft Punk? WTF? One More Time was amazing.

Also, to the argument that anything done by (say) Daft Punk, Madison Avenue or Spiller aren't pop music, you must remember that a predominantly dance/rock/whatever artist is perfectly entitled to have the odd pop song as part of their catalogue without "betraying" their dominant genre.

To give an example of the flaw in that logic:

- Garbage is a rock band
- Cherry Lips is a pop song
- Garbage is a pop band

It simply does not follow that just because an artist or group normally falls into one category that every song they release must also conform to the same classification.

Of all of those listed so far...

Be Mine! by Robyn
Crazy by Gnarles Barkley
Leave, Get out by JoJo
Feel Good Inc by Gorillaz
Love at First Sight by Kylie
The Fear by Lilly Allen

Basically anything Nelly Furtado put out since 2000... So... Everything. :D

While I hate to admit it:

Britney Spears: Circus and If U Seek Amy

Handle Me by Robyn
Madonna's entire Confessions on a Dance Floor album

Kylie's entire "Fever" album.

Yeah, more than ten, so what? =P

:lol

Can't even come up with a list. Every time I start there are like two more that pop into my head.

But anyways, I'm down with the JT love. Lots of people like to hate just because he was in Nsync' and not much good has come from former boy band members, but his two albums are some of the best pop this decade.

It's my belief that everybody secretly loved the justin heavy n'sync songs.

but only because of subliminal messages.

I really liked Maroon 5's first album, minus "She Will Be Loved". Surprisingly good, especially for someone like me who really dislikes everything else the radio plays these days.

So yeah, anything by Maroon 5.

I'm not going to split the fine line between pop and other genres so deal with it.

Islands - Rough Gem
Death Cab for Cutie - I Will Follow You into the Dark
Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.
Coldplay - Viva La Vida
Guster - Amsterdam
Hilltop Hoods - The Nosebleed Section
The Killers - All These Things That I've Done
The Shins - New Slang
Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams (if only the radios didn't butcher it)
Finger Eleven - One Thing

Robyn - Be Mine!
Britney Spears - Piece of Me
Rihanna - SOS
Kanye West - Stronger
The Killers - Mr Brightside
The Strokes - Last Nite
Kylie - I Just Can't Get You Out of my Head

I need to think of some more.

1. Train - Drops of Jupiter
2. Maroon 5 - This Love
3. 'N SYNC - It's Gonna Be Me
4. Michael Bublé - Feeling Good (didn't chart, which surprises me)
5. Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl (pop?)
6. Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone
7. Plain White T's - Hey There Delilah
8. Fall Out Boy - Sugar, We're Going Down
9. Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
10. John Mayer - Waitin' On the World to Change

I could probably do a little better if I thought harder, but I'd say that's a pretty good list, especially since I don't really like this decade of music.

As a person who used to run a garagepunk label, I would gladly have pop accept that instead of garage rock only so I don't have to skip that track once Rhino's Grandchildren of Nuggets boxset eventually comes out.

i'm a sucker for this stuff every now and then. by 'pop' i treat it as something with flashy production, super catchy melody and good beat.
dunno what the real definition is.

the main ones that've stood out to me on radio / channel V etc have been - and this is gonna be hard to remember any early 2000's stuff..

sugababes - freak like me
rihanna - don't stop the music
aaliyah - more than a woman
robyn - cobrastyle/be mine/with every heartbeat
kelly clarkson - since u been gone
the knife - heartbeats
roisin murphy - let me know

Found this thread as I just bumped a Sara Bareilles thread and this one showed up during the search. Funny thing is that I already had a list of 20 or so of my favorite 00-09 songs just waiting for the day GAF would ask, guess it already did. I've managed to dwindle my favorites down to 11. Dunno if these are all "pop"...but whatever.

11. Snow Patrol - Just Say Yes
10. Rachael Yamagata - Worn Me Down
9. Dave Matthews Band - Fool To Think
8. Annie Lennox - Pavement Cracks
7. Statistics - A Number, Not A Name
6. The Cure - The Loudest Sound
5. Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism
4. Frou Frou - Only Got One
3. Elisa - Heaven Out Of Hell
2. Imogen Heap - Goodnight And Go
1. The Cure - Cut Here
